LaVerne Allen
March 26, 1931 - Sept. 9, 2002
LaVerne (Greene) Allen, 71, Harrisonville, died Sept. 9, 2002, at her home.
She was born March 26, 1931, in Harrisonville, the daughter of Lorenzo and Geraldine (Vernon-McGruder) Greene.
On March 5, 1953, she married Alvard O. Allen Jr.
Mrs. Allen was a lifelong Harrisonville resident. She had been employed for 21 years at Sprint Telecom Corporation.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband of 37 years, Alvard O. Allen Jr., in November 1990.
Surviving are three sons, Alvard Lawrence Allen, Torrance, Calif., Gerald Dean Allen, Swansea, Ill., and Charles Lee Allen, Harrisonville; four daughters, Shirley Whittler, Nira Cox, Thressa Bernice Allen and Judy Allen-Rogers, all of Kansas City; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a first cousin, Barbara Handy, St. Louis.
Pallbearers were Alvard Lawrence Allen, Gerald Allen, Charles Allen, Theodore Cox, Auther Whittler and Tim Rogers.
Services were Sept. 14 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, with Pastor Sydney R. Ramphal officiating. Music was by Sharon Allen and Connie Givens.
Burial was in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

Ferne E. Chitwood
Dec. 16, 1911 - Sept. 22, 2002
Ferne E. Chitwood, 90, Archie, died Sept. 22, 2002, at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville.
She was born Dec. 16, 1911, in Parker, Kan., the daughter of James Robert and Lulu Elizabeth (Watson) Cochran.
Mrs. Chitwood had lived in Iowa and California before moving to Archie in 1954.
She was a licensed practical nurse at Cass Medical Center for 35 years, retiring from the obstetrics unit in 1990. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Archie.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Archie John Chitwood, in December 1974.
Surviving are a son, Roy Cooper, Overland Park, Kan.; two sisters, Thelma Freeman, Lee's Summit, and Bernice Heaton, El Dorado Springs; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Mark Wise, Brian Klapmeyer, Randy Osborn, Glen Chitwood and William Chitwood.
Services were Sept. 25 at Atkinson Chapel, Archie, with the Rev. Joe Crook officiating. Susan Holden was the soloist.
Burial was in the Highland Cemetery, Parker, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Archie.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association.

Melvin Lee Ford
June 13, 1940 - Sept. 17, 2002
Melvin Lee Ford, 62, Archie, died Sept. 17, 2002, at his home.
He was born June 13, 1940, in Iantha, the son of Harry and Elsie Mae (Francy) Ford.
He was a graduate of Archie High School. He married Sharon Drury.
Mr. Ford had been employed at the General Motors Assembly Plant in Leeds, retiring in 1989. He had been employed with Adesa Auto Auction in Lee's Summit for the past eight years.
He was a member of the Hoot-N-Holler square dance club for 15 years.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Sharon Ford; two children, Karen Bowman, Pleasant Hill, and Keven Ford, Archie; three brothers, Howard Ford and Larry Ford, Archie, and Darrel Ford, Lee's Summit; a sister, Shirley Ackerman, Monett; and five grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers were Thurman Flanary, Chriss Lemler, Homer Long, Raymond Flanary and Ward Attebery.
Pallbearers were Robert Reinert, Randy Cooley, Jim Ketchum, Terry Hoenshell, Bobby Cross and Ron Cooley.
Services were Sept. 20 at the United Methodist Church, Archie, with the Rev. Travis James officiating. Mike Bowman was the vocalist.
Burial was in the Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Archie.
Memorial contributions may be made to Twin Lakes Hospice, Clinton, or the Archie United Methodist Church Youth Group.

Blanche N. Greenwood
Aug. 20, 1916 - Sept. 21, 2002
Blanche Nadine Greenwood, 86, Adrian, died Sept. 21, 2002, at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler.
She was born Aug. 20, 1916, in McCracken, Kan., the daughter of Harold and Mary (Davidson) Snyder.
Mrs. Greenwood was a livelong Bates County resident.
Surviving are five sons, Bill Greenwood, Adrian, Larry Greenwood, Buell, Aaron Greenwood, Creighton, Frank Greenwood, Jasper, and James Greenwood, Butler; four daughters, Joyce Walsh, Adrian, Dixie Dawson, Harriett Bledsoe and Susan Sheridan, all of Butler; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were Sept. 24 at Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, with the Rev. Ron Anderson officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian.

Tori Ann Phillips
Jan. 18, 1960 - Sept. 19, 2002
Tori 'Tody' Ann Phillips, 42, Harrisonville, died Sept. 19, 2002, at Research Belton Hospital, Belton.
She was born Jan. 18, 1960, in Independence, Kan., the daughter of Johnathan Benjamin and Virginia Claudette 'Ginger' (Shears) Phillips.
Ms. Phillips worked in Joplin as a court clerk for 14 years.
Preceding her in death was a brother, Mark Jeffrey Phillips.
Surviving are a son, Cody Daniel Colin, Harrisonville; a daughter, Shelly Poindexter, Harrisonville; her parents, John and Ginger Phillips, Harrisonville; a brother, John Dean Phillips, Harrisonville; a sister, Sheena Lynn Humphrey, Harrisonville; and two grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers were Dean Phillips, Johnny Phillips and Richard Carter.
Pallbearers were Kevin Poindexter, Michael Lynn Gaither, Kyle Humphrey, Johnathan Phillips, Cody Colin and Jerry Humphrey.
Service were Sept. 22 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, with the Rev. William 'Bud' McCleskey officiating. Music was by Bud and Vey McCleskey, Jim Porter and Renee' Burton.
Burial was in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville, under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.

Mary Etta Harvey
Aug. 28, 1910 - Sept. 16, 2002
Mary Etta Harvey, 92, Harrisonville, formerly of Pleasant Hill, died Sept. 16, 2002, at Camden Health Care Center, Harrisonville.
She was born Aug. 28, 1910, in Independence, the daughter of James R. and Mary (Blake) Prewitt.
On June 27, 1930, she married Marvin J. Harvey in Rich Hill.
Mrs. Harvey moved to Pleasant Hill in 1912 and was a 1928 graduate of Pleasant Hill High School.
She and her husband started a produce house in Harrisonville in the early 1930s and in the late 1930s they started Harvey Implement. She became the manager in 1957 and retired in the mid-1970s.
Mrs. Harvey moved back to Pleasant Hill in 1989. She was a longtime member of the Harrisonville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's group. She joined the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in 1990.
She was a member and past president of the Harrisonville Business and Professional Women and was the 1971 recipient of the 'Woman of the Year' award. She was a 50-year member of the Bayard Chapter of the Eastern Star, Grand Cross of Color and served as Mother Adviser in Rainbow for several years. She was a member of the Cass Medical Center Auxiliary and the Pink Ladies. She served as chairman and treasurer of the Cass County Council on Aging and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Preceding her in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin Harvey, in November 1956; four sisters and seven brothers.
Surviving are three daughters, Kay Walker, Sunrise Beach, Ann Schleicher, Kansas City, and Jane Lane, Pleasant Hill; two sisters, Mamie Snow, Harrisonville, and Dorothy Hunt, Independence; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Jef Walker, Jay Walker, Bret Schleicher, Travis Land and Devin Land. The soloist was Jil Walker and Janet Allbaugh was the pianist.
Services were Sept. 19 at the Atkinson Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Jacobs officiating.
Burial was in the Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church memorial fund.

Eugene Walter Oliver
Oct. 12, 1932 - Sept. 21, 2002
Eugene Walter Oliver, 69, Garfield, Ark., formerly of Harrisonville, died Sept. 21, 2002.
He was born Oct. 21, 1932, in Higginsville, the only child of Everette Watson and Minnie Elizabeth (Poisal) Oliver.
Mr. Oliver graduated from Higginsville High School in 1950. He then attended Central Missouri State Teachers College in Warrensburg, where he and his mother both received their bachelor's degrees in 1954 and their master's degrees in 1958. They were the first mother and son to ever receive their degrees together.
On May 23, 1954, he married Helen Virginia Bauerle in Higginsville.
He taught one year in Stover before moving to Harrisonville in 1955, remaining there for 29 years teaching high school. He was a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association.
Mr. Oliver moved to Beaver Lake in northwest Arkansas in 1986.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and his father-in-law, Henry Bauerle.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Oliver, of the home; a son, Eugene W. Oliver Jr., St. Joe, Ark.; three daughters, Jennie Oliver and Jackie Anderson, Harrisonville; and Janie Mooneyham, Largo, Fla.; his mother-in-law, Leona Murry, Garfield; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were Sept. 24, at Ruddick Cemetery, Garfield.
The family suggests contributions be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
