Curtis Poort
Curtis L. Poort age 83 of Sedalia born on January 12, 1929 in Hazel Hill, Missouri son of Hugh and Neva Norman Poort. On September 2, 1972 in Sedalia, Missouri Curtis death on May 17, 2002. Curtis really ejoyed life and was a friendly person who loved to visit. He also was an avid pool player. He is survived by two brothers; Gary Poort of Orange California, Robert Poort of Sedalia, Missouri, seven sisters; Gail Pettis of Sedalia, Diana Ellison of Liberty, Missouri, Pearl Bradley of Dayton, Ohio, June Williams of Kansas City, Missouri, Joyce Moss of Wickenberg, Arizona, Joan Marr of Warrensburg, Missouri, Norma Elwell of Independence, Missouri. He was preceded in funeral service. Arrangements are by Ewing-Schutte-Semler Funeral Home.
Carl Smith
Carl Ludwig Smith, 88, of Sedalia, born September 13, 1921, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Carl F. and Ellen J. (Holms) Smith. Carl and Ruby J. Townsend were united in marriage on June 2, 1951.
Carl moved to LaMonte in 1925 and attended grade school at Sunny Bell School from 1928 until 1936. He graduated from LaMonte High School in 1940 and enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in 1941. He served 4 years in the East Coast and South Pacific and received several metals, including the Good Conduct Metal and the American Theater South Pacific Metal, before being honorably discharged on February 2, 1946 at the rank of First Class Petty Officer.
Carl returned to Sedalia and attended Sedalia Business College, where he received his diploma in 1949. After college Carl sold insurance until 1951, and he had a bread route for 2 years. Carl became a mail carrier until his retirement.
Carl is survived by his wife Ruby; his daughter Glenda Gould and her husband William of Sedalia; his son Carl W. Smith of Sedalia; 4 grandchildren, William "Billy" Keele, Barry Keele, Brandi Lakin and Carl F. Smith; 5 great grandchildren, K-Lynn Keele, Corene Keele, Drake Keele, Michael Smith and Anthony Lakin; and his sister Ellen Scott of Mesa, Arizona.
Carl was preceded in Cemetery.
The Smith family will receive friends beginning at 9:30AM, Saturday in the funeral home chapel.
Betty Alexander
Betty Jean Alexander age 91 of Hughesville born on December 14, 1923 in Hughesville daughter of Clarence A. and Maude Ethel Swope Shaw. On March 6, 1948 in Longwood she death on June 1, 1983. Betty graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in 1941. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and the W. M. U. at Marshall Junction. She was also a member of the Bothwell Homemakers and Sedalia Jolly Elders. Betty loved writing poetry, playing music and sewing. She is survived by a grandson; Jason Knox (Caroline) and a granddaughter; Amanda Moore (Jason) both of Hughesville, three great grandchildren; Khale Knox, Maggie Knox and Colton Moore. She was preceded by a daughter; Diane Knox. A celebration of her life will begin with visitation at 9:00 A.M. Saturday, November 7, 2015 with the service at 11:00 A.M. at First Christian Church with Rev. Dr. Chad McMullin officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be James Hall, Gary Richardson, Bill Claycomb, Gary Griffith, Don Moore and Larry Mueller. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Joe Runge, John David Runge, Clay Mitchell, Bill Davis, Ronnie Richardson and Alan McCurdy. Burial will be in Memorial Park born a twin on November 5, 1917, in Sedalia, to James Allen & Mary Greer Phillips. On April 17, 1937 in Sedalia, she was united in marriage to James Laurence "Chub" Ramey, who married life living on a farm. Granny loved the color pink. Her greatest love was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Winifred loved her daughters-in-law and sons-in-law like they were her own children. Granny loved baby dolls and had started a collection. She also loved dishes, cups and anything with pink roses. Another passion was her many beloved dogs that she had throughout the years. The most recent was "Little Boy" a Yorkie terrier given to her & Chub by their son, Gary before his death by one son, Gary Lee; one grandson, Daniel Ray; one great grandaughter, Madison June Ramey; and two brothers, Robert Irvin & Allen DeWitt Phillips.
She lived her entire life within 2 miles of the family home where she was passing of her husband 3 1/2 years ago. She never spent one night alone. She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church for 73 years.
Services will be at 10:30a.m. on Tuesday Sept. 1, 2009 at Ewing-Schutte-Semler Funeral Home in Sedalia. Her grandsons will serve as Pallbearers. Her granddaughters will serve as Honorary Pallbearers along with Danny Smith & Pete Shirky. Burial will be in the Hopewell died on Friday September 9, 2011 at Rest Haven Convalescent & Retirement Home. She was married in 1957 in Sedalia to James Huffman. She was then death. Vondena attended school in Sedalia. She enjoyed traveling with her husband James and lived in Saudi Arabia for two years. She liked visiting with her friends, playing cards, bingo and going to the boats. She was a person who always gave to others before doing something for herself. She is survived by two sons; Jerry Huffman of North Carolina, Joseph Miller of Arlington, Texas, two sister-in-laws; Dorothy Chancellor of Olathe, Kansas, Opal Chancellor of Sedalia, several nieces, nephews and devoted friends, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren. She was preceded in died on Sunday, October 31, 2010 surrounded by her family. She was married on June 1, 1956. Carroll preceded her in death by her parents; granddaughter, Rachel Brines and stepfather, John Swope.
Elizabeth's family will have private funeral services at a future date.
Evelyn Vannoy
Evelyn Mae Vannoy age 96 formerly of Hughesville born on August 12, 1919 in Green Ridge, daughter of Charles and Eva Ream Upton. On April 9, 1938 in Green Ridge she death on August 28, 2002. Evelyn graduated from Green Ridge School District. She was a homemaker and a farm wife. Evelyn enjoyed cooking and was a wonderful baker. A past member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. Evelyn later was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Evelyn was a grandmother extraordinaire, loving mother and wife. She was a devoted caregiver in her husbands later years. Evelyn was a long time resident of the Hughesville area, where she served as a 4-H leader for a number of years. She is survived by two sons; Dean Vannoy (Sharon) of Hughesville, Harold Vannoy (Anna Lee) of Rochester Hills, Michigan, one brother; Robert Upton of Sedalia, five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She is preceded in Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 27, 2016 at Ewing-Schutte-Semler Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Downing, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Sunday. Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Upton, David Upton, Shannon Teeter, Leon Telgemeier, Bob McKeehan and Chad McKeehan. Honorary Pallbearer will be Neil Upton. Burial will be in Green Ridge Cemetery. Memorials to American Diabetes Association or Bloomin Garden.
