Robert E. Cate, 1922-2004, Lincoln
Robert Eugene Cate, 81, of Lincoln, born Dec. 20, 1922, in Grapevine, Texas, a son of Robert M. and Bertha Ethel Dwight Cate. On April 10, 1946, in Olathe, Kan., he was married.
He moved to the Edmonson area in 1955. He farmed on the old Raymond Harris farm, custom combined for other farmers and drove a truck, hauling grain and freight during the 1960s. He was a charter member of Edmonson Baptist Church in rural Lincoln.
He also was an over-the-road truck driver for Bob Proctor, retiring when he was 77. He enjoyed spending time with his family, attending church, going fishing, listening to country and bluegrass music and watching football. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5925 in Lincoln.
Also surviving are a daughter, Vickie L. Cate Lucas, and her husband, Russell, of Lincoln; a son, Randy G. Cate, and his wife, Linda, of Lincoln; four sisters, Betty Hendrix, of Pflugerville, Texas, Vene Henderson and Peggy Eubanks, both of Grapevine, and Emma Ridings, of Dennison, Texas; a brother, Billy Cate, of Grapevine; four grandchildren, Jeanene Lange and Aaron Cate, both of Lincoln, Dawn Katzer, of Ava, and Kelly Cate, of Orange Park, Fla.; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Dorcas Cate; and a brother, Dayton Cate.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Edmonson Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Schawo officiating. Pallbearers will be Kelly Cate, Aaron Cate, Bruce Lange, Tray Dayton Lane, Russell Katzer and Marvin Boeschen. Honorary pallbearers will be Sterling Swearengin, Tom Smith, Ed McLerran, Bob Proctor and the men of Edmonson Baptist Church. Burial will be in Edmonson Cemetery in Windsor.
The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Bartholomew Catholic Church Building Fund in care of Hadley Funeral Home in Windsor.
Raymond C. York, 1917-2004, Warsaw
Raymond C. York, 87, of Warsaw, born June 13, 1917, in Putnam County, Ind., a son of Elmer O. and Huldah Franklin York. On Sept. 15, 1940, in Putnam County, Ind., he was death.
Mr. York was a heavy equipment mechanic and joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in 1953. In 1973 he retired to Tip Top Hills near Warsaw. He purchased a backhoe and dump truck, worked until summers were too hot and winters were too cold and then sold his equipment. He then sold used furniture and restored antiques. He loved woodworking, going to auctions and fishing. A main passion was collecting anything to do with steam engines and trains.
Survivors include a son, Melvin York, and his wife, Beverly, of Blue Springs; a daughter, Barbara Johnson, of Warsaw; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Shawnee died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at her home.
She was Cemetery. Friends may call after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Heckart/Gillespie Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
Wanda M. Bishop, 1965-2004, Rocheport
Wanda Marie Bishop, 38, of Rocheport, formerly of Marshall, born Sept. 6, 1965, in Marshall, a daughter of Jerry L. and Brenda Kay Bishop.
Miss Bishop had lived in the Columbia area since 1986. She worked for the Dana Corp. in Columbia. She was a 1983 graduate of Marshall High School. She was Baptist. Her dog, Cocoa, who was her pride and joy, Cemetery near Rocheport. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the family in care of the funeral home.
Thomas O. Darr, 1910-2004, Edwards
Thomas O. Darr, 93, of Edwards, born Oct. 18, 1910, in Novinger, a son of Edward and Susan Snyder Darr. On Aug. 5, 1953, in Kansas City, he was died in January 1997.
Mr. Darr graduated from high school in Green Castle in 1928. He joined the Army in 1943 and served in World War II. He was discharged in 1945. He later lived in Kansas City. He loved music and played the fiddle. He handcrafted two fiddles and a base fiddle. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Warsaw.
Surviving are two nieces, Betty and Helen, of Iowa; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann Catholic Church in Warsaw. The body will be cremated. His ashes will be placed in Mossy died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at University Hospital in Columbia from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
She was married to Steven J. Soppe, who survives of the home.
Mrs. Soppe was a certified nurse's aide for 27 years. She was a member of Gravois Mills United Methodist Church. She coached soccer and was a Girl Scout leader.
Also surviving are a son, Steven D. Soppe, of Versailles; two daughters, Barbara A. Crall, of Eldon, and Tracy M. Edgar, of Barnett; two brothers, Oscar "Bud" Hakanson and Alfred Hakanson, of Dubuque, Iowa; five sisters, Tammie Giunta, Sherrie Moriarity, Harmony Mitchley-Deich, of Dubuque, Terrie Smith, of Mount Carroll, Ill., and Melodie Cushman, of Platteville, Wis.; and 10 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Donna Beverlin and Shellie Hakanson.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in Versailles Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
