John Ab Short
John Ab Short, 88, Joplin, passed away 8:36 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at Freeman West Hospital.
Mr. Short was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Sturkie, Ark., near Salem.
He was the son of Joe Ab and Minnie (Jones) Short, the youngest of 13 brothers and sisters.
John moved to Joplin in 1997, after living in Tahlequah, Okla., and West Plains, Mo., for many years.
He was a farmer and owned several farms located near Caruthersville and Parma in the Bootheel region of Missouri.
In addition to farming, John was involved in the wholesale gas business.
He owned and operated a service station and three Western Auto stores in southeast Missouri.
John married his wife, Norma (Asher) Short in Pocahontas, Ark., in 1939.
They remained married for 62 years until her death on Dec. 10, 2002.
He was a member of the congregation at Mt. Hope Church of Christ in Webb City, Mo.
John had two children. His son, Johnny Ray Short, preceded him in death on Feb. 16, 2001.
A daughter, Ruth Eleen (Short) Boehning, survives.
Additional survivors include nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and four great-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at Parker Mortuary.
Graveside services were 7 p.m. Sunday at State Line Cemetery in Lanton, Mo.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association or Fairhaven Children’s Home.
William “Bill” Carhart
William “Bill” C. Carhart, son of the late William H. Carhart and Vera G. Cornell Carhart, was born Nov. 17, 1946, in Cudahy, Wis., and died Aug. 19, 2007, in Springfield, Mo., at the age of 60 years.

Jerry Dean Strain
Funeral services for Jerry Dean Strain, 62, Rockford, Ill., will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, at Free Union Church of Christ under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Mr. Strain died 8:35 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at his home.
He was born April 1, 1945, in Bakersfield, Mo., the son of the late Roy and Evelyn Gillette Strain.
He was baptized at Bakersfield Church of Christ as a young man and graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1964.
After two tours of duty in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict, he returned to Rockford, Ill., where he worked and lived.
He is survived by two sons, Larry Dean Strain, Middleburg, Fla., and Marcus Colton Strain, Lampasas, Texas; one daughter, Rhonda Lynn Yates, husband, Ralph, Middleburg, Fla.; one brother, Charles Strain, wife, Barbara, Moody, Mo.; four sisters, Reba Wade, Kansas, Glenna Hall, husband, Clyde, Moody, Mo., Betty Talley, husband, Jack, Cottage Hills, Ill., and Linda Perry, husband, Henry, Pottersville, Mo.; one uncle, Virdo Anderson, Mtn. Home, Ark.; special friend, Annette Eige, Rockford, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Wilma Strain, Coloma, Mich.; three brothers-in-law, Dale Hall, wife, Willamae, West Plains, Eldon Goodwin, wife, Donna, Mtn. Home, Ark., and James Perry, wife, Paula, Pottersville, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.
His grandparents; parents; four sisters, Barbara, Bonnie, Wanda and Marsha; and two brothers, Claude and wife, Joann, and Lloyd, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Burial will be at Bean Cemetery.

Funeral services for Annette L. Yost, 63, Pomona, Mo., will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at Carter Funeral Home Chapel, West Plains, with Father Sherman Wall officiating under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, West Plains.
She was born the daughter of the late Arthur Gridley and Antoninette Digirolomo Gridley on March 12, 1944, and died Sept. 27, 2007, in West Plains, Mo.
She was the beloved mother of Dawn Ann May, loving mother-in-law to Kevin May; and grandmother to three beautiful grandchildren, Christopher, Alicia, and Kevin, all of Pomona, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Gridley and Antoninette Digirolomo Gridley.
She was a loving wife to Charlie Vion and William Yost, who also preceded her in death.
Family visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at Carter Funeral Home Chapel, West Plains.
Burial will be in Mackey Cemetery, Howell County, Mo., under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc., West Plains.
