Vera Irene Harland, 82, of Palm Springs, Calif., died of complications from pneumonia on Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Calif.
She was born on Feb. 7, 1917, in Piedmont, Mo., to Flynn and Sarah Sparks Dunnegan, the youngest of seven daughters.
She grew up in St. Louis and Piedmont.
During her early years, she was a dental assistant in St. Louis and later she and her sister owned and operated a retail fabric and women's wear store in Ironton, Mo.
She was married to the late Dr. R. E. Harland, M.D.
She and Dr. Harland made their home in Ironton for many years where he had a private medical practice, and they owned and operated the Lone Pine Hotel and Restaurant.
In 1971, they moved to La Jolla, Calif., where he continued a shared medical practice until his death in 1976.
Due to failing health, Vera moved into a retirement facility in Palm Springs, Calif., in 1989.
As her health continued to decline, she was moved to Premier Rehab and Nursing Center in late 1997, and on Aug. 27, 1999 suffered respiratory arrest from aspiration pneumonia and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where she died in the hospital's Hospice unit on Oct. 10, 1999.
She is survived by her four children: Mike Harland and daughter-in-law Lynn, of San Diego, Calif., Pam Harland Joggerst and son-in-law Jim of Jackson, Mo., Gary Harland of San Diego, Calif. and Sally Harland and son-in-law Tony of Palm Springs, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Annette Jostes of Columbia, Mo., Heather Ricketts of Newport Beach, Calif., Rebecca Hahn of St. Louis, Kelly and Lindsay Harland of San Diego, Calif., Lauren Rafter of Diamond Head, Calif., James Patrick Harland of San Diego, Calif. and Sarah Severson of Palm Springs, Calif.; two nieces, Patsy R. Feller of Longview, Tex. and Betty Sobo Dye of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four nephews, Robert Sobo of St. Louis, Bill Sobo of Seattle, Wash., Van Johnson of St. Louis and Dan Johnson of Warrenton, Mo.
Numerous great nieces and nephews also survive.
Her husband, parents and sisters, Rita, Blanche, Hazel, Opal, Perma and Grace preceded her in death.
A private family service was held in Palm Springs on Oct. 13, 1999 at the Palms Springs Mausoleum.
A second private service was held at her burial in El Camino Memorial Park and Mortuary in San Diego, Calif. on Oct. 15, 1999.
Elton Dost
SHAWNEETOWN, Mo. - Elton O. Dost, 72, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at his home in Shawneetown.
Friends may call today from 4-8 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson, Mo.
Funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Shawneetown, with interment in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Howard Mueller will officiate.
Friends may call at the church after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Dost was born Jan. 3, 1928, near Oak Ridge, Mo., son of the late Otto and Clara Rudert Dost.
He and Mildred Mirly were married June 14, 1952.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Lisa Dost of Maumelle, Ark., Gary and Sheri Dost of Shawneetown, Neal and Kim Dost of Shawneetown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Greg Nolan of Jackson, and Jean and Steve Chapman of Cape Girardeau.
Also surviving is a brother, Erwin Dost of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Helen Morrison of Oak Ridge; eight grandchildren; Amanda and Jeff Chapman, Jamie and Ashley Dost, Zach and Taylor Nolan, and Aaron and Austin Dost.
He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Mr. Dost graduated from Jackson High School in 1946.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
From 1953-67 he was a partner with Marvin Richter doing business as D&R; Trucking.
He later went to work for ABF Trucking Co., and retired in 1989 after 22 years of service.
He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Shawneetown, being in the Men's Club and Voters Assembly.
He was also active in community affairs and took great pride in his grandchildren.

Rev. Neil Stein
The Rev. Dr. Neil Stein, 65, of Asheboro, N.C., died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Stein was pastor at Centenary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, from November 1985 to September 1997.
He was born Aug. 27, 1934, in Malcolm, Neb., son of Leonard and Mildred Deal Stein.
He married Carolyn Cagle, who died May 7, 1998.
Stein was a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University and St. Paul Theological Seminary.
He received an honorary doctorate from Central Methodist College.
He served as a United Methodist minister in the Missouri East Conference 36 years.
He was a member of World Methodist Council and the General Board of Church and Society.
He retired in 1997 and moved to Asheboro.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. John C. Stein of Cherryville, N.C., Thomas C. Stein of St. Charles, Mo.; a daughter, Catherine C. Stein of Graham, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Asheboro.
The Rev. Boyd Stokes and the Rev. Bret Cogan will officiate.
Friends may call at the church after the service.

Samuel Tanksley
Samuel Perry Tanksley, 73, of Cape Girardeau, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau after several years of illness.
He was born Aug. 20, 1926, at Walnut Grove in New Madrid County, son of William Perry and Delia Rose Foust Tanksley.
He and Jewel Lee Allred were married for 54 years.
"Sammy" Tanksley was owner and operator of Sam Tanksley Trucking Inc. in Cape Girardeau for 32 years until his semi-retirement in 1984.
He was then active with Tanksley farms, until he became disabled and his two sons continued to operate the farm.
He accomplished many things and performed many good deeds for several people and the community.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Cathy Tanksley and Dwight and Kim Tanksley of Cape Girardeau; three brothers, Richard Tanksley and Carl Tanksley of East Prairie, Mo., and Marion Tanksley of Reagon, Tenn.; four sisters, Mageline Mills of Portland, Ore., Elizabeth Rogers of Sikeston, Mo., and Dorothy Ivie and Ruth Ivie of East Prairie, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Nikki, William, B.J., and Brandon of Cape Girardeau, Adam of Benton, Mo., and Courtney of Benton, Ky.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Samuel Wallace and Gary Wayne Tanksley; two sisters, Margie Ann Marshall and Gracie Aliene Tanksley.
Friends may call at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie from 4-8 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
The Rev. Gary Brothers will officiate, with burial in East Prairie Memorial Park Cemetery.

Oralea Hawley
DEXTER, Mo. - Oralea "Lee" Hawley, 55, of Dexter, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at her home.
She was born Sept. 9, 1944, in St. Louis, daughter of Walker, and Lucille Louise Boyce Hudson.
She and Jerry W. Hawley were married March 18, 1967, in St. Louis.
Mrs. Hawley moved to Dexter in 1967.
She taught school in Southeast Missouri 27 years, and retired from the Bernie school system in 1999, where she was director of special education.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, SEMO Counselors Association and L.A.S.E.
Surviving are her husband; a son, Michael Wayne Hawley of Dexter; a daughter, Karen Michelle Hawley of Springfield, Mo.; her mother-in-law, Delsie M. Hawley of Dexter; and sister-in-law, LaJuana Moore of Tulsa, Okla.
Other relatives and many friends also survive.
Friends may call at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter from 5-8 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Doyle Corlew officiating.
Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.
Mary Chafin
Mary E. "Liz" Chafin, 67, of Cape Girardeau, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital South in St. Louis.
She was born Aug. 24, 1932, at Fisk, Mo., daughter of Buford and Frieda McKinzie.
She married Fred Chafin.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Lori Ingram of Huntsville, Ala.; her mother of Puxico, Mo.; a brother, Gene McKinzie of Thompson Falls, Mont.; two sisters, Bonnie Rogers of Lowndes, Mo., Martha Townsend of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; a granddaughter, Alex; and a grandson, Cole.
She was preceded in death by her father.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk.
The Rev. Grant Gillard will officiate.
Burial will be in Shain Memorial Cemetery at Fisk.
