Pearl W. Smoyer, 95, Mesa, Ariz., died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, in Gilbert, Ariz.
She was born Dec. 4, 1905, in Stover, the daughter of John William and Anna Coester.
She married Judson Smoyer in 1928 and he preceded her in death in 1980.
A son, Gene Smoyer, died in 1960.
Mrs. Smoyer spent most of her adult life in Lawrence, Kan.
She retired to Arizona in 1978.
She had been a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lawrence.
Survivors include two sons, Neal Smoyer, Wycoff, N.J., and John Smoyer, Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Sylvia Wagner, Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Katherine Coester, New York City; a brother, Keith Coester; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at Melcher's Mission Chapel, Mesa, Ariz. with the Rev. Burton Giese officiating.
Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery, Mesa.
Sylvester E. Wolf
Sylvester E. Wolf, 88, California, formerly of Tipton, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City.
He was born May 23, 1912, in Tipton, a son of Urban and Lula Worley Wolf.
He was married Sept. 5, 1936, in Tipton, to Helen Schmitt, who died Dec. 31, 1989.
He then was married May 23, 1992, in California, to Frances Gerhart who died Sept. 7, 1995.
Mr. Wolf worked for Schreck Lumber Company in Wichita, Kan. and later was a lumber buyer for Fischer Manufacturing for 25 years, retiring Jan. 1, 1975.
He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church at California and attended St. Andrew School, Tipton.
He was a 3rd and 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1360 at Tipton.
Surviving are three sons, David Wolf with his wife, Isabel, Tipton, James Wolf with his wife, Janis, Defiance, and John Wolf with his wife, Diane, Sedalia; one daughter, Mary Copeland, Jefferson City; one brother, Louis Wolf, Conyers, Ga.; one sister, Nora Embry, Tipton; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Otto Wolf, Eugene Wolf and Vincent Wolf; and one sister, Helen Vickers.
A prayer service was held Monday, April 2 at 7 p.m. at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 3 at Annunciation Catholic Church with Msgr. Francis Gillgannon officiating.
Burial was in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Tipton.
The family suggests memorials to Annunciation Catholic Church Building Fund, 414 West Patrick Street, California, or the California Senior Center, 107 West Versailles, Avenue, California.
John A. Anderson
John Albert Anderson, 94, Fortuna, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at Good Shepherd Care Center in Versailles.
He was born May 17, 1906, in Woodlake, Neb., a son of John Andrew and Alice Bassford Anderson.
On May 23, 1931, he married Blanche Gartman in Baynard, Neb.
She died Oct. 24, 1998.
Mr. Anderson farmed in Nebraska until 1954 when he moved to Fortuna.
He continued farming there until retiring in 1972.
He entered Good Shepherd Care Center in November 2000.
He was a member of the Glensted Methodist Church and Fortuna Area Senior Citizens.
Surviving are three sons and their wives, Gene and Joyce Anderson, Fortuna, Dwayne and Lowene Anderson, Tipton, and John Edward and Rita Anderson, Mobile, Ala.; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one brother and five sisters.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5 at Glensted Church.
Burial will be in the Glensted Cemetery.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles.
Memorials are suggested to the Glendsted Church.
Mrs. Alice A. Aeschbacher
Mrs. Alice A. Aeschbacher, 92, Fortuna, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Good Shepherd Care Center, Versailles.
She was born April 30, 1908, in Versailles, a daughter of Daniel W. and Caroline Basinger Baumgartner.
She was married Dec. 24, 1935 to Earl Monroe Aeschbacher, who died April 2, 1991.
A homemaker, Mrs. Aeschbacher was a member of Bethel Mennonite Church east of Fortuna.
Surviving are two sons, Vincil Aeschbacher, Fortuna, and Kenyon Aeschbacher, Versailles; two daughters, Doris Whittaker, Westminster, Calif., and Barbara Burke, Kansas City; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Sue Crocker, one infant daughter and one grandson.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4 at Bethel Mennonite Church with the Rev. Tom Voth officiating.
Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Women in Mission in care of Bethel Church.
Arrangements were under the direction of Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Versailles.
Mrs. Ethel L. Gillespie
Mrs. Ethel L. Gillespie, 87, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at North Platte Care Center, Alliance, Neb.
She was born June 11, 1913, in Alliance, Neb., a daughter of John and Lillian Key Duskin.
She married John Gillespie on March 26, 1932.
He died in 1976.
Mrs. Gillespie lived most of her life in Alliance.
She was known for her love and knowledge of horses and her riding skills influenced many.
Surviving is a daughter, Lowene Anderson with her husband, Dwayne, Tipton; Darlene Crow and her husband, Don, Portsmouth, R.I.; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24 at Alliance Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Schutt officiating.
Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements were under the direction of Bates-Gould Funeral Home, Alliance, Neb.
Mrs. Sudie I. Scott
Mrs. Sudie Irene Scott, 94, California, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Moniteau Care Center in California.
She was born April 19, 1906, in Morgan County, a daughter of Henry Alfred and Ola Gabriel Comer.
She was married near Hopewell to Herbert Scott who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Scott worked in a costume factory and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is one son, Lloyd Comer with his wife, Erma Jean, of Orange, Calif.; two brothers, Henry Comer with his wife, Bessie, Newton, Iowa, and John Comer with his wife, Ethel, Jefferson City; two sisters, Lula Foxworthy, Ulysses, Kan., and Lucille Barbour, Clarksburg; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by an infant brother; a brother, Ralph Comer; a sister, Margaret Gish; and a close companion, Orville Morton.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2 at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California, with the Rev. Steve Strauch officiating.
Burial was in Old City Cemetery, California.
Pallbearers were Richard Tuttle, Billy Meyer, Larry Murphy, Asa Meyer, Chad Murphy and Russell Yarnell.
