Merlin Lewis, 82, Boonville, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Cooper County Memorial Hospital, Boonville.
He was born April 25, 1917, in Tipton, a son of Edward and Ada Lewis.
He married Alfreda Miles on June 16, 1954 in Speed.
She survives.
Mr. Lewis was a veteran of World War II.
Also surviving are two sons, Mern Lewis, Boonville, and Maurice Miles, Moberly; four daughters, Darlene Jackson, Cindy Lewis, Tina Lewis and Sharon Lewis, all of Boonville; one brother, James Lewis, Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Omega Crockett, Boonville; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29 at the H.T. May & Son Funeral Home in Boonville with the Rev. Dale Hopkins officiating.
Burial was in the Bunceton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were James Dewey Jackson, Rusty Jackson, Tyrese Duncan, Tyrone Jackson, Steven Warrick and Frank Wilson.
Mrs. Sophia E. Leis
Mrs. Sophia E. Schreck Leis, Garden Plain, Kan., 100, died Feb. 4, 2000, at Wichita, Kan.
She was born Sept. 19, 1899, at Tipton, the daughter of Anton and Josephine Beeten Schreck.
On Sept. 26, 1915 she married George P. Leis at Garden Plain.
He preceded her in death.
A longtime Garden Plain resident, Mrs. Leis was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Altar Society, both at Garden Plain.
Surviving are eight sons, Don Leis, Ron Leis, Dave Leis and Les Leis, all of Garden Plain, James Leis, Miami, Fla., Gerald Leis, Kingman, and Ken Leis and Dan Leis, both of Wichita; two daughters, Markita Terhune and Lois Jean Timmermeyer, both of Wichita; 53 grandchildren, 120-great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by four sons, Quintin Leis, Vernon Leis, Jerome Leis and George Leis Jr.; and a daughter, Eileen Murray.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7 at St. Anthony Church with Father Philip Allen officiating.
Burial was in St. Anthony Cemetery at Garden Plain.
Arrangements were under the direction of Wulf-Ast Mortuary, Garden Plain.
Alfred H. Schaffer
Alfred H. Schaffer, 73, Holts Summit, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at his home.
He was born Aug. 21, 1926, in St. Anthony, a son of Conrad H. and Hilda Lueckenotte Schaffer.
He was married May 18, 1948, in St. Elizabeth, to Henrietta M. Holtmeyer, who survives at the home.
A lifelong resident of Central Missouri, Mr. Schaffer attended school in St. Anthony.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, and was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was employed as a heavy-equipment operator with Mid-State Waste for more than 50 years.
Also surviving are five sons, Conrad Schaffer, Columbia, Eugene Schaffer and Alfred Schaffer Jr., both of Fulton, and Charles Schaffer and Alvin Schaffer, both of Jefferson City; six daughters, Mildred Buehrlen, Belle, Bernadine Ousley, Russellville, Louella Stuart, Fulton, Johnetta Smith, Clarksburg, Melissa Brinker, Washington, and Kimberly Rosenberg, Jefferson City; two sisters, Elizabeth Scheulen and Rosa May Howard, both of Meta; 33 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A son, Marcus Schaffer, died April 15, 1951.
Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Freeman Chapel with the Rev. Guy Thomas officiating.
Graveside services and burial with military honors were at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens, Jefferson City.
Inez Marie Spurgeon
Inez Marie Spurgeon, 73, Stover, died early Sunday morning, Jan. 10, 1999, at the Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia.
She was born Nov. 24, 1925, in Mankato, Kan., the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Jane Ziegler Walker.
She was united in marriage to Harold Spurgeon, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Spurgeon was a homemaker and had resided in Stover for several years.
She is survived by a son, Orville Miller, Kansas City; a daughter, Charlene Lovejoy, Stover; a sister, Lulla Gray, Independence; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Jan. 13 at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover, with Dr. James Henderson officiating.
The music selection of "Precious Memories" were played.
Interment was in the Sumner Cemetery in Wheatland.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover.
Elna Lela Bear Newkirk
Elna Lela Bear Newkirk, 85, Marilyn Heights, died Jan. 14, 1999, at her home in Marilyn Heights.
She was born Nov. 22, 1913 at Okeene, Okla., the daughter of Hugh Morris and Dessie Agness Powell Bear.
On Aug. 9, 1938, in Camdenton, she married Norman T. Newkirk who preceded her in death in 1978.
Mrs. Newkirk lived most of her life in Moniteau County.
In 1932, she graduated from Tipton High School.
She earned her bachelor's degree in education from Central Missouri State University in 1957.
She taught elementary school for thirty years at various schools in the Moniteau County area.
Mrs. Newkirk was a member of the First Baptist Church, Tipton.
She is survived by two sons, N. Thomas Newkirk, Fresno, Calif., and Monte Newkirk, Cleveland, Ohio; one daughter, Janis Wolf, Defiance; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Louise Bear.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999 at the First Baptist Church, Tipton.
The Rev. Dusty Klein and the Rev. J.D. Cooper officiated.
Pallbearers were Kirk Wolf, Kent Wolf, Erin Wolf, Roy Dick, Jerry Newkirk, Adam Wolf and Ryan Wolf.
Burial was in the Moreau Cemetery, Tipton.
The family suggests contributions to First Baptist Church, Tipton.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Meisenheimer-Griswold Funeral Home, Tipton.
Larry Lawrence Payne
Larry Lawrence Payne, 61, Tipton, died Jan. 15, 1999 at his home.
He was born Aug. 28, 1937 in Hanna, the son of Chester and Alma Woody Payne.
On May 26, 1973, in Syracuse, he married Sharon Sousley, who survives the home.
Mr. Payne lived in Versailles, prior to moving to the Tipton area.
He worked for Wal-Mart since 1981.
Prior to that he was self-employed and worked with heating and air conditioning.
He was a member of West Union Baptist Church, Versailles.
He loved woodworking and he also was a avid fisherman and hunter.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Renee Skipper, Ocoee, Fla.; two brothers, Gene Payne, Tipton and Robert Payne, Wentzville; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 18, 1999 at West Union Baptist Church, Versailles.
The Rev. Rod Campbell officiated.
Pallbearers were Charles Sousley, Roy Sousley, Brian Skipper, Terry Milburn, Greg Payne, and Mitch Payne.
Honorary pallbearers were Harold Davenport Jr., Harold Davenport, Rick Payne, Steve Payne, Mike Harper, Barry Marshall, Jim Sousley, Buster Morrison, and Doug Gross.
Burial was in the Syracuse Cemetery.

Virginia "Ginger" Hibdon
Virginia "Ginger" Hibdon, 48, Florence, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 12, 1999, at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia.
She was born Sept. 11, 1950, in Independence, the daughter of Virgil J. and Glenna Ledgerwood Conner.
On Aug. 23, 1977, she married Clint Hibdon, who survives of the home.
Mrs. Hibdon was employed at Interstate Studios in Sedalia and was supervisor with Interstate Image Service.
She served on the Publication and First Aid Committees, and received her 10-year pin at Christmas.
She enjoyed hunting and fishing, and won first place in the McDonnell Douglas State Archery Competition.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Gary Fahrni, Salina, Kan.; one daughter, Cynthia Sullivan, Independence; her mother, Glenna Conner, Gravois Mills; one sister, Linda Hollaway, Gravois Mills; and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles, with David Scott officiating.
Interment was in the Florence Cemetery.
Casketbearers were Jeff Nolting, Harry Beckman, Shannon Beckman, Tom McNeil, Ernie Mertgen and Ronnie Conner.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Versailles.
