Trula Lavaughn Cypret
Graveside services for Trula Lavaughn Cypret, 77, West Plains, Mo., will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Mrs. Cypret died 3:29 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, in Ozarks Medical Center. She was born May 17, 1930, in Peace Valley, Mo., to Roy and Lucille Henry Barton.
On Feb. 10, 1953, she was married at Salem, Ark., to Clella Otis Cypret, who preceded her in death March 12, 1987.
Before her retirement, Mrs. Cypret was employed as an operator with Bell Telephone. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by one brother, Doug Barton, West Plains; three sisters, Emma Sanford, St. Louis, Mo., Kaye Johnson, husband, Sonny, Rockford, Ill., and Lynn Douglas, husband, Melvin, Udall, Mo.; sister-in-law, Betty Barton, Mishawaka, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her parents; husband; one brother, Delbert Barton; and three sisters, Maxine Barton, Glynda Webb and Virginia (Judy) Walker, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Cemetery and left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
David Hogan Sears
David Hogan Sears died Dec. 30, 2007, after an extended illness.
David was born May 22, 1941, in Taft, Calif., to Osro Hogan Sears and his wife, Sallie Mae (Jones) Sears.
David’s childhood was spent in Bakersfield, Calif.
His family moved to West Plains, Mo., in 1951, where he graduated from West Plains High School in 1959.
David was in the first group of volunteers for the U.S Peace Corps, serving in Nepal from 1962 to 1964.
David and Barbara Jean Shephard were married July 9, 1966, in Springfield, Mo., while both were students at Southwest Missouri State University. David graduated from SMSU in 1968 with a degree in sociology, and in 1973, he earned a M.S. degree in guidance and counseling. He worked in several programs for state, federal and city governments, working with the economically disadvantaged.
In 1976, David and Barbara moved to Republic, Mo., where they owned and operated a dairy farm. Through the influence of his Sunday school class at Hood United Methodist Church and his experience working in churches as a member of the Rural Crisis Task Force, David entered the ministry. He served as a lay pastor at Battlefield UMC while attending Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo., graduating in 1992. As a United Methodist Elder, he served the congregations of Mansfield, Hartville, Lexington and Ava, Mo.
His father, Osro, preceded David in death.
David is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sons and their families, Mark Sears and wife, Shelby, their children, Michael and Madeline Sears, Springfield, Jon-David Sears and wife, Stephanie Smith, Yellow Springs, Ohio, Joseph Sears and his girlfriend, Tracy Conway, Springfield, Mo., and Samuel Sears and wife, Kelly, Springfield; his mother, Sallie Sears, Marionville; his sisters, Elizabeth Atha and husband, Dan, Harrodsburg, Ky., and Sallie Ameling and husband, Jerry, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; his brother, Joseph Sears and wife, Glenise, Eldersburg, Md.; his brothers-in-law, Bill Shephard and wife, Loma, Millersville, and Jim Shephard and wife, Charlotte, Memphis, Tenn.; his stepsister-in-law, Faye Jones and husband, Lloyd, West Plains, Mo.; special friends, Larry and Linda Jones, Springfield; and numerous other friends and family.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home with funeral services 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Asbury United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to charities of choice or to the Asbury United Methodist Church, Springfield.
Truette William Colbert
Truette William Colbert, the son of the late Rev. Robert Franklin Colbert and Jemima Dodson Colbert, was born July 18, 1946, in Burnham, Mo. Truette passed on into glory Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at the age of 61 years.
Truette attended school in the West Plains and Bakersfield area, and June 10, 1967, married Shirley Diane Knapp.
Truette worked at Brown International Shoe Company for years and at local sawmills. He proudly served one tour in Vietnam, 1965-66, and then in Desert Storm in 1991 with the Arkansas National Guard, altogether serving in the military 17 years. Truette loved fishing and watching sports.
He is survived by his son, Matthew and wife, Robin, Caulfield; son, Timothy, West Plains; and daughter, Tracey and husband, Chris, West Plains. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Rachel, Abigail, Erin and Andrew and one baby on the way. He also is survived by three sisters, Bobbie Havens, West Plains, Geneva Flood and husband, Bill, Willow Springs, and Carol Stroud and husband, Don, Kansas City; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert Colbert and Dwight Colbert; three sisters, Claudette Smith, Alice Perlock and Patricia Collins.
Truette was of the Baptist faith.
Family night will be Thursday, Jan. 3, at Carter Funeral Home, West Plains. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Shady Grove Cemetery, Bakersfield, with military rites performed by the Veterans Honor Group of West Plains and the Missouri Military Funeral Honors Program.

Rollin Smith
Funeral services for Rollin Mitchell Smith, 90, West Plains, Mo., will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at First United Methodist Church under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith died 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, in Brooke Haven Healthcare. He was born March 1, 1917, in Pomona, Mo., the son of the late Millard Mitchell and Bessie Ann Brown Smith.
He graduated from West Plains High School in 1935, and then attended Draughn’s Business School in Springfield, Mo.
Rollin was united in marriage Aug. 27, 1936, to Sybil Flora Vernon. They were married for 71 years. Sybil remains at the family home.
He protected our country during World War II, serving with a tour of duty in Italy, and he became a Christian during his military service. After returning home, Smith was a civil servant, working for the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years. He enjoyed working both at the post office and as a rural carrier on Route 3 until his retirement in 1974.
Rollin served on the board of the West Plains Savings and Loan for 47 years, as a board member, President and Chairman of the Board. His involvement with the Savings and Loan went beyond the board, as he expanded his duties to include appraising homes and farms throughout Howell and surrounding counties.
As a co-owner of the Holiday Inn from 1965 to 1984, and the Ramada Inn from 1974 to 1991, Smith was an award-winning innkeeper having been recognized as Innkeeper of the Year in 1981. Alongside his son, Dr. Bruce Smith, Rollin built and established many cornerstones for the foundation of the West Plains business community. Along with motels and shopping centers in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Louisiana, one of his most cherished commercial developments was the Southern Hills Shopping Center in West Plains.
Smith was a pioneer of economic and commercial development in West Plains, most recently receiving the honor of the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award from the West Plains Chamber of Commerce. He also was awarded the West Plains Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Member Award.
While serving on its board of directors from 1973 to 1974, one of his most treasured accomplishments was the addition of the second story to the West Plains Memorial Hospital. Along with his many civic contributions, Rollin was a loving father to his only son, Bruce Mitchell Smith, D.D.S., who preceded him in death in 2001. He also was a role model and loving grandfather to his grandsons and great-grandchildren.
Rollin Smith is survived by his wife, Sybil Vernon Smith, of the family home; daughter-in-law, Allison London Smith; grandson, Travis Mitchell Smith and fiancee, Karen Carlson, and her son, Spencer Gille; along with Sandra Knudtson Smith, the mother of his great-grandchildren, Emily Anastasia, Evan Mitchell and Elijah Jackson Smith; grandson, Chase London Smith, his wife, Nicole, and daughter, Sydney London Smith, all of West Plains, Mo.; brothers, Dr. Kenneth Smith, Oklahoma City, Okla., Gerald Smith and wife, Helen, St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Bruce; three sisters, Oline Smith Richards, Dorys Smith Clay and Allie Mae Smith Godber; two brothers, Jack (Wayne Irvin) Smith and Bobbie Gene Smith; five sisters-in-law; and five brothers-in-law.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ozarks Council Boy Scouts of America, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or your local chapter of the United Way and left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Helen Mitchell
Funeral services for Helen Frances Mitchell, 91, West Plains, Mo., will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
Mrs. Mitchell died 1:39 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at Ozarks Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 6, 1916, in Willow Springs, Mo., to Ben H. and Docia Cleo Hight Fair.
She graduated from Willow Springs High School, and on May 30, 1936, she was married at West Plains, Mo., to Wayne Alfred Mitchell, who preceded her in death March 21, 2000.
Mrs. Mitchell had worked at Milstead’s Dress Shop and before her retirement was employed with the Missouri Division of Employment Security. She and Wayne loved square dancing, bowling and traveling. She was a great cook and seamstress and enjoyed growing flowers. Of all her activities, her family and grandchildren were what she enjoyed the most.
Mrs. Mitchell was an active member of the First Christian Church, West Plains, for many years.
She is survived by two children, Dale Mitchell, wife, Thelma, West Plains, and Linda Duggan, husband, Mike, Plano, Texas; four grandchildren, Stacy Coiner, husband, Jeff, Ken Duggan, fiancee, Ann Mears, Marlon Duggan, wife, Stacia, and Michelle Thomas, husband, Chuck; seven great-grandchildren, Tanner, Jordan, Trevor, Cassidy, Mitchell, Ty and Misty; one brother, Chick Fair; one sister, Juanita “Tooter” Kirk; and many nieces and nephews.
Her parents; husband; granddaughter, Denise; three brothers; and one sister preceded her in death.
Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Burial will be at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shaw Medical Building Oncology Department in Honor of Thelma Mitchell and left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
