William (Bill) Wilkerson, 87, Springfield, Mo., a former Neosho resident, died at 10:40 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at a Springfield nursing home, following a sudden illness.
Mr. Wilkerson was born Nov. 4, 1911, at Springfield and moved to the Neosho area as a child.
He worked as a salesman for Tom's Peanuts in Joplin, retiring in 1976.
He was a former member of the Neosho Senior Citizens, Inc. and a member of the Neosho United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday school class.
He married Bessie C. Berner Sept. 18, 1939, at Granby.
She preceded him in death July 4, 1994.
Survivors include a son, Robert (Bob) W. Wilkerson, Springfield; two daughters, Mary Jane Nelson, Tulsa, Okla., and Susan K. McCubbins, Blue Springs, Mo.; four grandchildren, Krista Lohman, Bill Nelson, Melissa McCubbins and Heather McCubbins.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. J.C. Harp officiating.
Burial will be in the Neosho Memorial Park Cemetery, south of Neosho.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. today, and the family will receive friends from 1 pm. until 2 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the services.
Contributions, in memory of Mr. Wilkerson, may be made to the United Methodist Church, in care of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
Goldie Caldwell
Goldie Caldwell, 86, Neosho, died at 11:25 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at a Neosho nursing home after an illness.
Mrs. Caldwell was born June 10, 1912, at Piedmont, Kan.
She lived most of her life in the Anderson area, moving to Neosho about 20 years ago.
She worked at an Anderson poultry plant for eight years, later working at Buddy L Manufacturing, Neosho, retiring in 1974.
She was a member of Faith Chapel Assembly of God, Anderson.
She married Herman Caldwell on March 10, 1930, at Girard, Kan.
He died in May 1967.
A son also preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Bob Caldwell, Neosho, and Tom Caldwell, England, United Kingdom; a daughter, Mary Sue Gordon, Pineville; a brother, Dale Richardson, Caurle, Mo.; four sisters, Violet Carr, Cleveland, Tenn., Neva Newport, Pittsburg, Kan., Zelda Hignight, Lenexa, Kan., and Flossie Houston, Citrus Heights, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ozark Funeral Home, Anderson.
The Rev. Derald Compton will officiate.
Burial will be in Anderson Cemetery.
Friends may call after noon today at the funeral home, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.
Contributions may be made to Medicalodge of Neosho, in care of the funeral home.
Don Riley Sr.
Donald Unger "Don" Riley Sr., 70, Neosho died at 8:11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at Specialty Hospital, Tulsa, Okla., after an illness.
Mr. Riley was born June 7, 1928, at Pittsburg, Kan.
He lived in the Joplin area most of his life.
He attended the Missouri Highway Patrol Academy, Rolla.
He worked for the Joplin Police Department for 22 years, retiring in 1977 as a sergeant.
He worked for Missouri Southern State College Campus Security for 15 years.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
He married Artha Thompson on Dec. 20, 1958, in Joplin.
She survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Donald U. "Chip" Riley Jr., Joplin, and Johnny Louden, address unavailable; four daughters, Katherine Cullum and Mona Devine, both of Neosho, Angela Yeager, Granby, and Donna J. Cook, Carthage; stepmother, Faye Petty, Moberly, Mo.; a sister, Connie Carter, Reno, Nev.; a brother, Conley Petty, Kansas City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The body will be cremated.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Parker Mortuary, with the Rev. J.K. Wright officiating.
Visitation will follow.
Alta Upton
Alta Maude Upton, 94, Neosho, died at 9:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at Freeman Neosho Hospital following a short illness.
Mrs. Upton was born Jan. 5, 1904, in Kansas City, Kan., to Lee Roy E. Doty and Jennie Belle (Hamm) Doty.
She came to this area as a child.
She retired as an LPN from St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin.
She was a member of Cave Springs Baptist Church.
She married Fred Upton Aug. 1950, in Bentonville, Ark.
He preceded her in death Feb. 1967.
She is survived by three daughters, Wanda Arnold and Alma Adams, both of Neosho, and Dora Henderson, Lowell, Ark.; two sons, LeRoy Schmitt, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Joe Dan Riley, Tucson, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Amy Upton, Antioch, Calif., and Dorothy Green, Amarillo, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Georgia Browning in 1993, and a son, Jerry Schmitt, in 1998.
Services, under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Clark Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. Buel Buzzard officiating.
Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, north of Neosho, with great-grandsons serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
Charles Doolen
Charles L. Doolen, 94, Carthage, died at 3:08 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Carthage after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Doolen was born Aug. 20, 1904, in Prosperity, Mo.
He moved to Carthage in 1961, after living in the Webb City area 23 years.
He was a retired house painter and construction worker.
His wife, Alberta Doolen preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1979.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Charles Doolen Jr., and a stepdaughter, Marguerite Swanson.
Survivors include two sons, John W. Doolen and his wife Thelma, Neosho, and Gary L. Doolen and his wife, Cindy, Carterville; four daughters, Patricia Lawrence and her husband, Bob, Carterville, Jessica Jordan and her husband, Dale, Colonial Heights, Va., Charleen Smith and her husband Kenneth, Sand Springs, Okla. and Becky Bennett and her husband, Jerry, Springfield, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Mary Lou Lawrence and her husband Jack, Pittsburg, Kan.; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Hope Cemetery with his son John W. Doolen, minister, officiating.
Grandsons serving as pallbearers will be John Doolen Jr., Kenny Ray Smith, Michael Smith, Jerry Wayne Bennett, Bobby Jack Lawrence, and John Lawrence.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hedge-Lewis Chapel.

Don A. Thornberry
Don A. Thornberry, 75, Neosho, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at his home, following a sudden illness.
Mr. Thornberry was born May 20, 1923, in Wanda, Mo., to Edgar Thornberry and Ida (Sheppard) Thornberry.
He served six years with the United States Navy.
He was a lifelong resident of the area, retiring in 1985 after 23 years in the maintenance department at Neosho R-5 school district.
He was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
He was a member for 50 years of Masonic Lodge #247, A.F. & A.M. serving as Past Worshipful Master, and a member of American Legion #163 in Neosho.
He married Nadine Ball on Nov. 7, 1948, in Joplin.
She survives.
Additional survivors include three daughters, Donna Surber, Granby, Mona Clouse, Neosho, Cynthia Lentz, Belleville, Ill.; a brother, Walter J. Thornberry, Carthage; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services, under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at Clark Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Terry Swagerty officiating.
Burial will be in Neosho Memorial Park Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. today and until 10 a.m. Tuesday when the casket will be closed and remain closed.
Memorial contributions may be made to Northside Baptist Church building fund in care of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
Carl Forbes
Carl E. Forbes, 92, Rocky Comfort, died at 10:35 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at Medicalodge in Neosho after an illness.
Mr. Forbes was born July 7, 1906, in Miami, Okla., to the late Francis and Julia Fisher-Forbes.
He moved to Rocky Comfort in November 1997, coming from Cowiche, Wash.
He was of the Full Gospel faith.
He married Pearl Evelyn Carter on April 8, 1934, at Stella.
She survives.
Additional survivors include three sons, Jerry Forbes, Tieton, Wash., Rex Forbes, Rocky Comfort, and Alvis Forbes, Jackson, Wyo.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Marshall, in 1940; five sisters; and seven brothers.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson.
The Rev. Frank Arnall will officiate.
Burial will be in the Union Cemetery at Stella.
Pallbearers will be Dennie Oakes, Lee Oakes, Emery Oakes, Bill Fores, Al Forbes and Vernon Lindquist.
Honorary pallbearers will be Virgil Carter, Charles Carter, Jimmy Carter, Clero Carter, Glen Wylie and Edward Forbes.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday at the Ozark Funeral Home from 12 noon until 8 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
