Norman Leon “Lee” Green
Norman Leon “Lee” Green, a native of Willow Springs, quietly passed away early Friday morning while at Brooke Haven Healthcare in West Plains from natural causes. Born Aug. 11, 1918, to John William Green and Mary Etta “Jo” Gibson near Willow Springs, Mo., he was the baby of a large family and his brothers and sisters were important to him.
He was 89 years, 10 months, and 2 days.
Lee married Reva Wallin Stephenson on Aug. 27, 1940, in Canon City, Colo., and became “Dad” to Bonnie Louise, Barbara Geraldine and Ernest Lee Stephenson.
Two daughters, Connie Fay Hiler and Kay Green Losh, were later born to this union.
Lee loved kids, his own, his grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews.
He took great delight in talking to them, playing with them, and was a “soft touch” for them. Lee was raised in a Christian family and re-affirmed his faith in Jesus Christ about 20 years ago.
Lee proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Germany, Austria and France as a “Heavy Machine Gun” operator.
He was awarded the Bronze Star three times for his valor on the field.
When asked about this he modestly replied, “Ah, they gave those to everybody.”
Lee worked for the same company for approximately 42 years, even though the company changed names and ownership several times throughout his employment. This enabled him to work in 22 different states, where he made many long-lasting friendships.
He finally retired in 1982 from Kerr-McGee as an inventory auditor in the timber products division.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents; 12 brothers and sisters; two daughters, Bonnie Turner and Jerry Johnson; his wife, Reva, after 61 years of marriage; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He leaves behind two daughters, Connie Hiler of Willow Springs, and Kay Losh and her husband, Joe, of Van Alstyne, Texas; a son, Ernest Lee Stephenson and his wife, JoAnn, of Jacksonville, Ark.; and a son-in-law, Don Turner of Independence, Mo.
Twelve grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.
Truly one of “the greatest generation,” he was a remarkable man, and leaves many warm memories for his family and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Green will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2008, at the Westside Family Life Center, 1274 County Road, Willow Springs, with Pastor David Lovan officiating.
A visitation will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at the Willow Funeral Home, 106 E. Third St., in Willow Springs.
Burial will follow funeral services at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Willow Springs.
Memorials may be made to the Pine Grove Cemetery and left at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Willow Funeral Home.
Fred Milo Martin
Fred Milo Martin passed away June 12, 2007, at his home in Aztec, N.M., after a long and debilitating illness. He was born Oct. 12, 1954, in Durango, Colo. Fred was the fifth child born to Ina Welch Cook Martin and Ralph Milo Martin, both longtime residents and cattle ranchers of Ignacio, Colo. He attended elementary and junior high school in the Durango system but graduated from high school in Aztec.
At the age of 20, Fred moved with the family to Rover, Mo., to work on the relocated family ranch. Then he worked for Ark-Mo Oil Company, another family enterprise. Fred eventually moved to Aztec where he lived his remaining years, managing his brother’s mobile home parks so they were successful businesses.
Fred had many talents. One of his greatest was to take what was broken and discarded and make it usable and even beautiful again. As a finish carpenter, he made cabinets and trim for his own home. Fred remodeled many mobile homes and turned them back into quality homes. He was able to work with any material or any piece of equipment. He was a Jack-of-all-trades, fixing almost anything, anytime, anywhere. Fred was a pleasure to work with and a patient teacher. He wanted you to learn how to do something so that you could be independent and capable. He taught his young nieces how to change oil in a vehicle and which wrenches were used for what in the shop.
Fred was a philanthropist. He helped an untold number of people in Aztec and the surrounding community over the last 25 years. Fred gave opportunity to individuals and families to get on their feet or through a tough spot. He liberally provided transportation, food, education, utilities and addressed any number of concerns, as he saw the need, for all those he assisted. Fred felt a strong, ethical obligation to assist those less fortunate than himself and he did so his entire life. Fred’s generosity and expertise are greatly missed by all who loved him.
Fred is survived by Eleanor Martin Kambouris (sister) and J. George Kambouris of West Plains; Barbara Ina Martin (sister), Kansas City, Kan.; and John R. Martin (brother) and Karen Martin of Bloomfield, N.M. Fred has two nieces, Elizabeth K. Delay of Kansas and Sara J. Kambouris of New Mexico. He has three grandnephews and a grandniece.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Farmington, N.M., with fellowship following.
We remain heartbroken by the loss of our beloved friend.
