Raymond Leon Powers
Raymond Leon Powers was born, "in a little two room log cabin, across the tracks" in Richland, Pulaski County, Mo., to Charles Henry Powers and Mary Ann Newberry Powers. His sisters were Roberta Osbourne and Mavis Roam, his brother was Elton Powers, all of Richland.
Raymond married Doris Elaine Browning on March 31, 1936. They were blessed with five children. Gary Ray Powers (died in 1970), Julia Ann Powers (died shortly after birth), Jay Lynn Powers, Raymond Alan Powers, and Judith Gayle Powers.
Through the years, Doris and Raymond were also blessed with grandchildren. Cary Leigh Powers (Kansas City), Robert Todd Powers (Kimberling City), David Michael Powers (Orlando, Fla.), Lori Lynn Powers (Kansas City), Mark Hannah Ashworth, Wendy Leigh Ashworth (Lebanon), Anda Rebecca Zeiger, Asa Lucian Powers and James-Alan Holt Powers (Richland), who died in 2001. They had four step-grandchildren; Kevin Ware (Crocker), Danny Ware (Columbia), Alexis Roam and Joshua Chinn (Richland).
Raymond was a long time member of the Methodist Church, Richland Lions Club, and the Richland Saddle Club where he served as both ring master and judge. He attended Richland High School and during his senior year, was a proud member of the 1935 Richland basketball team, the first Richland team to ever play in the state play-offs. He was four-year all star and was proud of his varsity sweater with four stripes and star. Until his death, watching basketball on TV was a definite pleasure for him, especially the SMSU Lady Bears.
After graduation, Raymond began the R.L. Powers Truck Line in 1936. He first hauled freight and progressed to hauling livestock for many farmers in this area. In the early 50's he embarked on another career, the cattle business. He finally retired from the trucking after 37 years, and stayed with the cattle business until his death.
Raymond loved to talk about old times with Doris and his long time friend Jenny Jones and his faithful nurse Paula Goff. He also enjoyed his nightly phone calls from his daughter-law-law Beverly.
In writing an obituary, something of a personal nature seems to fade in the list of those that are still living and those that have passed on before. Raymond grew and lived in a time when a person's handshake was his solemn word, when a day's hard work was expected, and caring for family was an honor. Individuals that lived in this era have been titled, "The Greatest Generation," and from them many lessons have been taught. The children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of Raymond Powers left behind must remember the lessons taught and the stories that were told while sitting on the front porch. In this way, his legacy and his memory will not only be remembered, but honored.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2003 at Richland Memorial Chapel with Reverands Ralph Hosman and Pryor Ray Prewett officiating. Pianist, Mary Lou Blanchard played as Rodney Blanchard sang, "Peace in the Valley." Anda Zeiger played and sang, "Grandpa." Leslie Powers gave a lovely eulogy. Serving as escorts were Jay Lynn Powers, Raymond Alan Powers, Robert Todd Powers, Justin Raymond Powers, Daniel Patrick Ware and Kevin Matthew Ware. Honorary escorts were Robert E. Fugitt, Ralph Hamilton, Gene Henson, Carl L. Johnson, Alfred Lercher, Keith Lundh, Duane Pemberton, Larry E. Powers and Alfred Zeigenbein.
Burial followed in Oaklawn Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Richland Memorial Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the James-Alan Holt Powers Memorial Scholarship fund at UMR or the Richland High School Booster Club.
