Frederick Hulett Laas
Frederick Hulett Laas, 66, of Joplin, Mo. died October 1, 2001 after a long illness.
Born May 8, 1935 in Mishawaka, Ind. he was the son of Mildred and the late A.G. Laas.
He earned the B.A. and J.D. degrees from Northwestern University and was a member of the Northwestern Law Review.
A member of the Missouri and Jasper County Bar Associations, Laas joined the Joplin Law firm of Spencer, Scott and Dwyer in 1960.
Clyde L. "Dizz" Youngblood
Diamond, Mo. - Clyde L. "Dizz" Youngblood, age 73, of Diamond, Mo. passed away at 3:27 p.m. Friday, September 28, 2001 at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin.
Mr. Youngblood was born May 6, 1928 in Diamond, the son of Luther and Celia Youngblood.
He had lived in the Diamond and Carthage area most of his life.
He was a graduate of Diamond High School and the Crowder College Wastewater School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was the Wastewater Superintendent for the City of Diamond for 20 years, and previously worked at Rocketdyne in Neosho, Mo. for 12 years in Quality Control.
He was currently serving as a Crosswalk Guard for Diamond R-4 Schools.
James Waters
James Waters entered into rest September 26, 2001. He was 94 years old and a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, uncle and friend to all that knew him.
Mr. Waters was born May 4, 1907 in Eagleton, Ark. moving to Joplin at the age of three. He had many talents and jobs. He was a tailor, cab driver (he owned and operated the company called Safeway Cab), worked at Camp Crowder when it was being built, worked as a mail carrier, and owned a salvage yard at the corner of 7th and Oliver. He closed it in 1948 and moved to Kansas City, Mo. to work for Lock Joint Pipe Company. He was a code welder and invented several pieces of machinery for them. He retired from the company in the sixties and started walking. He walked five miles a day and was still walking every day he could until he entered into rest.
Mr. Waters was preceded in death by his loving wife, Georgia L. Hoke Waters. She went into rest in April of 1995. Mr. Waters moved back to Joplin in 1995 after the death of his beloved wife, and resided with his niece, Bernice McClain until his death. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include three daughters, Eleanor Ann Kellogg, Binghamton, N.Y., Jean McVay, Rockport, Texas, Rosalie J. Brothers, West Point, Calif.; granddaughters, Denice, Robin, Karen, Pam, Deborah, Gail and Linda; 14 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Pat Dewey and Kelly Ross, ministers, will officiate. Graveside services will be Monday at 3:00 p.m. at White Chapel Cemetery, Kansas City, Mo.
Melvin Leroy Short
Melvin Leroy Short entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 1, 2001, at 4:15 p.m. at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after a lengthy illness.
He was born December 6, 1921, at Cato, Kan., the son of John and Adeline (Underwood) Short. He attended school in Ponca City, Okla., before moving to the Welch, Okla. area with his parents in the late 1930's.
He married Dorothy Frances King on November 22, 1950, at the Welch Baptist Parsonage, Welch, Okla.
They moved to Joplin, Mo. in 1951, where he lived the rest of his life. He worked 32 1/2 years for Campbell 66 Trucking Co., retiring in September, 1982.
He was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church, Joplin, where he served for many years as Greeter, Sunday School Director, Usher and in other capacities.
He is survived by his wife of almost 51 years, Frances, of the home at 1844 West 21st Terrace, Joplin; one daughter, La Dona Lichlyter and husband, Ron, Joplin, Mo.; two sons, Carl Short and wife, Jonna, Carthage, Mo., and David Short and wife, Debra, Shawnee, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Jason Lichlyter and wife, Laura, Joplin, Mo., Audra Lichlyter, Joplin, Mo., Curtis Short and wife, Nicole, U.S. Marine Corps, Jeff Short, U.S. Marine Corps, Joshua Short, Dallas, Texas, Joslyn Short, Dallas, Texas, and Tayler Short, Shawnee, Okla.; one great-grandson, Austin Lichlyter, Joplin, Mo.; one brother, Don Short and wife, Jean, Chetopa, Kan.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a large family of Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
The family suggests memorial gifts to Independent Bethel Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.
Family visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary, Joplin. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 4, at the mortuary, with Rev. John Newberry officiating. The eulogy will be read by Rev. Ted Wynn, brother-in-law. Burial will be at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin, Mo.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
Infant Zachery Jackson Lee
Zachery Jackson Lee, stillborn infant son of Charles Lee and Mary Moorehead, both of Joplin, passed away at 8:05 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at Freeman Hospital West.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are paternal grandparents, Pamela Anderson and Charles Jackson Lee Jr., both of Joplin; maternal grandparents, Peggy Coleman of Joplin, and Richard William Moorehead of Neosho, Mo.; paternal great-grandmothers, Mary Pritchard and Edna Lee, both of Joplin; maternal great-grandmother, Helen Moorehead of Joplin; five aunts, Jennifer Copeland and Stormy Hinklin, both of Joplin, Autumn Moorehead of Neosho, Dixie Moorehead of Joplin and Kenzie Dennis of Seneca; and many loving family and friends.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
Loren V. Rose
Loren V. Rose, 97, Carthage, Mo., passed away at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2002, at the Carthage Health and Rehab Center.
Born on October 16, 1904, at Carthage, Mo., he was the son of the late Fletcher and Flora Rose, and he lived in the Carthage area most of his life. He was a farmer and was employed by Big Smith Manufacturing Company, until his retirement. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Carthage.
Loren married Nellda L. Devers on September 10, 1927. She preceded him in death on April 27, 1989.
He is survived by four sons, Volley Rose, Carthage, Carl Rose, Carterville, Allan Rose, Joplin and Wayne Rose, Olathe, Kan.; three daughters, Delores Baker, West Plains, Norma Compton, Carthage, and Lois King, Kansas City; 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Rose, Oakland, Calif.; and a sister, Edith White, Carthage.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at the First Church of the Nazarene Life Center, Carthage. Rev. Wayne Rose and Rev. B.J. Garber will officiate. Burial will be in the Fasken Cemetery, east of Carthage.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at the Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, Carthage.
Floyd Merton Dietz
Floyd M. Dietz, 82 years old, died Saturday, December 1, 2001 at the Spring River Christian Village, Joplin, Mo.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2001 at the DeKalb Christian Church with Rev. Alvin Reed, and Rev. Gary Adams officiating. Burial will be in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, Mo. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, Kan. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday December 8, 2001 at the Villa Heights Christian Church, Joplin, Mo. The family request memorial contributions be made to the American Rehabilitations Ministries of Joplin, Mo.
Floyd M. Dietz was born on July 12, 1919 in Sargent County, N.D., the son of Edwin Arthur and Eleanor Jane (Bacon) Dietz. He graduated from the Forman High School in 1937. He attended North Dakota State of Fargo, N.D. for one year. He graduated from Dakota Bible College in 1954 with a Bachelor's of Theology degree, where he also taught for two years. He served in many communities enjoying 44 years as a minister. Floyd was the minister at Christian Churches in Pipestone, Minn., Carthage, D.S., Lidgerwood, N.D., Nortonville, Kan., DeKalb, Mo., Camden Point, Mo., and Isadora, Mo. He also had interim ministries with churches in Rushville, Mo., and Effingham, Kan. He also held revivals in Oregon, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota. In his retirement, he did some supply preaching. Rev. Dietz also worked 20 years as a school bus driver and was a retired rural mail carrier, and carpenter. He served as a volunteer with community organizations such as: DeKalb Folks Home Board, DeKalb Homecoming Association, DeKalb/Rushville Summer Ball Teams, DeKalb School Band Boosters, Mission Lake Christian Camp of Horton, Kan. He was named the 1999 Volunteer of the Year at American Rehabilitation Ministries of Joplin, Mo. He was a member of the Villa Heights Christian Church, Joplin, Mo.
Mr. Dietz was married to Loretta Sarah Thomas on December 13, 1948 in Arlington, S.D. She survives of the home. Other members of the family surviving include a son, Charles A. Dietz, St. Joseph, Mo.; three daughters, Mrs. Velma Corson, Broken Arrow, Okla., Mrs. Mary Ellen Genandt, Magnolia, Ark., and Mrs. Twyla Marie Dishong, Gretna, Neb.; one brother, Cecil Dietz, Beloit, Wisc.; 12 grandchildren; one foster grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. His parents, one sister, Edna Nomeland, and two brothers, Ralph and Leo Dietz, preceded him in death.
