Edith Maxine Franklin
Edith Maxine Franklin, age 79, Neosho, Mo., passed away Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Beverly Nursing Center, following a long illness.
Edith was born on November 14, 1922, in Taberville, Mo., the daughter of Christopher L. Winfield and Edith Mae (Oehring) Winfield. She worked several years at the Sale-Bowman (Freeman) Hospital in Neosho, Mo., retiring from Nevada State Hospital in Nevada, Mo. in January of 1995. She was a member of the Christian Church.
She married Clifford Franklin on June 6, 1945 in Neosho. Mo. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1996.
She is survived by one brother, George Winfield, Goodman, Mo.; three sisters, Laura Frising, Joplin, Dorothy Busby, Tulsa, Okla., and Virginia Hurst, Wichita, Kan.; two nephews, James B. Winfield, Goodman, Mo., and David Hurst, Wichita, Kan.; two nieces, Thresa Bramblett, Wichita, Kan., and Devin Bramblett, Hillsboro, Mo.; and two brothers-in-law, Rex Hurst, Wichita, Kan., and T.J. Bramblett, Neosho, Mo.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Gibson Cemetery. Jerry Seigel, minister, will officiate. The pallbearers will be Dannie Martin, Bob Martin, David Hurst, Mike Cashel, Mark Oehring and David Oehring.
Arrangements are under the direction of Woodard-Freund-Thompson Funeral Home, Neosho, Mo.
Linda K. Hull
Linda K. Hull, Joplin, Mo., age 51, passed away at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2001, at St. Johns Regional Medical Center, following an illness.
Linda was born January 4, 1950 in Joplin, the daughter of the late Roy and Kathleen Lemmons. She has been a lifelong Joplin resident. Mrs. Hull was a homemaker.
She married Darrel E. Hull on October 4, 1985 in Miami, Okla. He survives.
Additional survivors include one son, Bradley Palmer, of Joplin; one daughter, Shelly of Independence, Mo.; one step daughter, Melonie Hull of Joplin; two brothers, Steve Lemmons and Roy Lemmons, both of Joplin; one sister, Kathy Black of Joplin; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Hull has been cremated. Her family will have a memorial service at their home at a later date. Her ashes will be interred in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
Patricia J. Chaplin
Patricia J. Chaplin, 73, of Key West, Fla., formerly of Joplin, died Monday, April 16, 2001 at her home after a long illness.
She was born February 4, 1928, in East Orange, N.J., to Connie and Dick Oberdahn.
She attended schools in New Jersey and Kansas City, Mo., and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
She was married July 20, 1947, to Robert L. Chaplin. He died October 26, 1970.
Mrs. Chaplin was a co-owner of the Newton County News and Neosho Miner-Mechanic newspapers for several years. She also was director of the printing department of St. John's Medical Center before her retirement.
Mrs. Chaplin was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and was active in the Republican Women's organization and the Joplin Woman's Club.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert L. Chaplin Jr., Key West, and Rick and Wendy Chaplin, of Joplin.
private services will be held in Key West. The body will be cremated with interment at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.
Max M. Kern
Joplin, Mo. - Max M. Kern, age 80, of 2801 N. St. Charles, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001 at the Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach, Calif. while visiting his daughter and son-in-law in Newport Beach.
Mr. Kern was born January 22, 1921 to Ed and Ethel Kern in Cedar, Kan.
He lived a multi-faceted life.
He loved to sing, had served his country in two branches of the military, first as a torpedo-bomber pilot in the Navy during WWII, and second as a Lt. Colonel with the Army National Guard from 1954-1968.
He then went to work for the Social Security Administration in Kansas City, Mo. as a claims examiner/fraud investigator retiring in 1986.
Following his retirement, after spending three years at the Lake of the Ozarks, he moved to Joplin six years ago.
Max loved serving the Lord at Christ's Church of Oronogo.
He was a real Handyman with a servant's heart.
Marvin Porter
Marvin D. Porter, 80, 530 W. 36th St., a longtime Joplin auto dealer, died at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, where he had been a patient 11 days. Mr. Porter was born Jan. 18, 1917, at Carthage. He had lived in Joplin since 1952, when he moved from Carthage. He was graduated from Carthage High School. He owned and operated the former Porter Cadillac-Buick dealership from 1950 to 1980. He was a member of Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, where he was club champion many times. He was a Missouri Golf Amateur semifinalist and was a member of the Horton Smith Cup team for many years. He played in the Buick Open PGA Tournament in 1963. He was inducted into the Joplin Golf Hall of Fame and, during a recent Twin Hills tournament, received the Hugh Rainey Award. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served with occupation forces in Japan and the Philippines. He married Rosamond Hagins on Nov. 28, 1936, in Los Angeles, Calif. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Max Porter, Tulsa, Okla., and Ed Porter, Springfield; a sister, Hassie Francis, Ocala, Fla.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William Christman will officiate. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Pallbearers will be Dick Moss, Russell Smith, Jim Weaver, Jon Dermott, Karl Blanchard Sr., and Dennis Erwin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Parker Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.
Albert Rhodes
Graveside services for Albert Rhodes, 71, 1209 Missouri Ave., who died Tuesday, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin, with the Rev. Frank Buchanan officiating.
The family will be at the home of a niece, Debbie Leslie, 1022 Jackson Ave.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
Elmer Ambler
IANTHA, Mo. - Elmer Ambler, 85, Iantha, died at 2:25 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 1997, at a Lamar nursing home after a short illness.
Mr. Ambler was born June 1, 1911, at Sheldon.
He had lived in Barton County for 13 years, where he moved from Garnett, Kan.
He was a farmer. Survivors include two brothers, Bill Ambler, Sheldon, and Tom Ambler, Iantha; three sisters, Thelma Locke and Hazel Tucker, both of Lamar, and Sylvia Cady, Kincaid, Kan.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Daniel Funeral Home, Lamar.
Burial will be in Toalson Cemetery, Sheldon.
Harry Bowles
DEERFIELD, Mo. - Harry Melvin Bowles, 77, Deerfield, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, Nevada, after a long illness.
Mr. Bowles was born Nov. 4, 1919, in Deerfield.
He attended Deerfield schools and was a lifelong local resident. He was a farmer.
He worked for several years at Deerfield Grain.
Survivors include a brother, Lawrence Bowles, Deerfield; and three sisters, Wilma Rogers, Nevada, Helen Carneal, Blairstown, and Margaret Carpenter, Franklin, Kan.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.
The Rev. Bill Smith will officiate.
Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery.
Friends may call until 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.
