Herman Goetz
PURDY, Mo. - Herman M. Goetz, 86, Purdy, died at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at Cox-Monett Hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Goetz was born April 20, 1910, in Purdy. He was a retired farmer and a member of First Christian Church, Purdy, and the MFA Farmers Co-op.
He married Fontella F. Wiseley in 1933 at Monett. She died Jan. 28, 1995.
Survivors include a son, Michael Goetz, Purdy; three daughters, Ileene Harris and Mickey Henderson, both of Purdy, and Elaine Chastain, Roach; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home, Monett. The Rev. Jerry Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Purdy Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Gene O'Hara
PIERCE CITY, Mo. - Richard "Gene" O'Hara, 75, Burlington, Iowa, a Pierce City native, died at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at Burlington (Iowa) Medical Center after an illness.
Mr. O'Hara was born Sept. 12, 1921, at Pierce City. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked in sales and engineering for 29 years at Ecolab Inc., Burlington. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Burlington, and the Knights of Columbus.
He married Wanda Marie Pollock on June 24, 1953, at Blue Springs. She survives.
Additional survivors include two sons, Richard O'Hara, San Francisco, and Kevin O'Hara, Burlington, Iowa; three daughters, Karen Tringali, Bolingbrook, Ill., Kathy Smith, Archer, Fla., and Tami Stewart, Cedar Falls, Iowa; a brother, William O'Hara, Pierce City; a sister, Kathryn Patterson, Joplin; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Harrisonville. The Rev. Bradley Offutt will officiate. Burial will be in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville.
Friends may call after noon today at Lunning Chappel, Burlington, where the family will receive friends after a rosary recital at 7 p.m. today.
Contributions may be made to Burlington area schools or to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Harrisonville.
Warren Roehrs
LAMAR, Mo. - Warren D. Roehrs, 58, 564 NW Seventh Road, Lamar, died at 10:18 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at Barton County Memorial Hospital, Lamar, after a short illness.
Mr. Roehrs was born Nov. 23, 1938, in Henry County. He had lived in Barton County since 1961.
He was a production supervisor for 3M, Nevada. He retired in 1995 after 24 years of employment.
He was an Army veteran.
He was a member of Iantha United Methodist Church, near Lamar, and served on the church board.
He married Judy Denny on Aug. 30, 1958, in the Iantha community. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Kim D. Roehrs, Scott A. Roehrs and Ron E. Roehrs, all of Lamar; his mother, Gladys King, Pacific City, Ore.; a brother, Wayne Roehrs, Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Donna Martin, Camas, Wash.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar, with the Rev. Marty Green officiating. Burial will be in Iantha Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Terry Brown, Brad Williams, Doug Fast, Bill Keltner, Russell Madison and Gene Madison.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to Iantha United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home.
Tammy Shellenbarger
LA RUSSELL, Mo. - Tammy Shellenbarger, 27, La Russell route 1, died at 11:22 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at University of Louisville (Ky.) Hospital after a long illness.
Mrs. Shellenbarger was born Oct. 30, 1969, at Kansas City. She lived most of her life in the La Russell and Carthage areas. She worked at Coolbrook Cabinet Co. at Avilla. She was a homemaker and a member of Blake Baptist Church.
She married David Shellenbarger on Jan. 6, 1986, at Springfield. He survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Laura Shellenbarger, Kylie Shellenbarger and Chelsy Shellenbarger, all of the home; her father and stepmother, Ronnie and Janie Johnston, Kansas City; her mother, Cindy Smiddy, Sedalia; three brothers, Ronnie Johnston Jr., Kansas City, and Robert Beck and Gene Beck, both of Sedalia; two sisters, Tara Johnston and Jessica Beck, both of Sedalia; and a maternal grandmother, Teresa Elliott, Lincoln.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage. The Rev. Roy Moody and Reuben Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Stone Cemetery, south of Carthage.
Pallbearers will be Elgin Dailey, Robert Dailey, Robert Beck, Greg Summers, Dee Haws and Jack Ball.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Family will be at the home of Robert and Karen Dailey, La Russell.
Walter Smart
ROCKY COMFORT, Mo. - Walter H. Smart, 77, Rocky Comfort, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, at his home after a sudden illness.
Mr. Smart was born June 19, 1919, in Carroll County. He was a lifetime area resident. He was a retired Baptist minister and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Fairview First Baptist Church, Fairview.
He married Opal Fehring on March 9, 1984. She survives.
Additional survivors include a son, Harvey Joe Smart, Trenton, Texas; a brother, Hollis Smart, Seal Beach, Calif.; a sister, Winifred Fields, Ludlow, Mo.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fairview Baptist Church. The Rev. Lawrence Shuey and the Rev. Pat Patterson will officiate. Burial will be in Dice Cemetery, Fairview.
Friends may call after noon Saturday at Wheaton Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fairview Baptist Church.
Floyd Barnes
Floyd Evert Barnes, 76, Pittsburg, Mo., formerly of Joplin, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997, at SAC-Osage Hospital, Osceola, after a long illness.
Mr. Barnes was born Sept. 9, 1920 at Riverton. He lived in the Joplin area until 1954, when he moved to the Kansas City area. He moved to Pittsburg in 1983. He worked for Eagle-Picher Industries, Joplin. He retired in 1982 as a bus driver for Continental Trailways after 38 years of service. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He attended Westridge Christian Church, Raytown.
He married Louise Alford on May 31, 1942 in Joplin. She died on Sept. 23, 1995. He was also preceded in death by a son.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Furguson, Raymore, and Joyce Cayton, Pittsburg; a brother, Lonnie Barnes, Raytown; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Parker Mortuary Chapel, Joplin. Melvin Afford, minister, will officiate. Burial will be at Hornet Cemetery, south of Joplin. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the chapel. Military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the American Legion.
Arrangements are under the direction of the funeral home.
Lea Darby
Lela Louise "Lea" Darby, 72, 5300 McClelland Park Blvd., died at 12:52 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin after a long illness.
Mrs. Darby was born March 27, 1924, at Bunch, Okla. She moved to Joplin in 1947. She was graduated from Sequoia Indian School, Tahlequah, Okla. She was a licensed cosmetologist and owned the former Lela's Beauty Salon before she retired in 1984. She was a full-blooded Cherokee and a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She was a member of Earl J. Bruton Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, Post No. 534, and the Rebekah and Eagles lodges.
She married Clarence Darby on Aug. 19, 1946, at Seattle, Wash. He died April 8, 1996.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Darby, Terry Darby and Jerry Darby, all of Joplin; a daughter, Wanda Wright, Joplin; a sister, Alice Cochran, Joplin; two brothers, Jess Johnson, Elk City, Okla., and Walter Johnson, Abilene, Texas; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Parker Mortuary. The Rev. Thomas Still will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Anderson, Larry Knight, Bob St. Clair, Cecil Williams, Richard Whited and Floyd Woolever.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
