Onis Washam
MILLER, Mo. - Onis Ray "Runt" Washam, 77, Springfield, a Miller native, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Washam was born May 21, 1919, at Miller. He moved to Springfield in 1959. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired carpenter. He was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, Springfield, and Southwest Model A Club.
He married Billie Jean Parnell on August 10, 1946, at Miller. She died April 29, 1986.
Surviving are two daughters, Michaela Ray, Republic, and Pat Garrison, Springfield; a brother, Bill Washam, Belton; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Morris Leiman Mosher Funeral Home, Miller. The Rev. Charles Mattix will officiate. Burial will be in Sycamore Cemetery, northeast of Miller.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today.
Contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Missouri, in care of the funeral home.
Margaret Kendall
Mary Margaret Kendall, 76, formerly of 1314 E. 33rd St., died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, 1997, at a local nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Kendall was born Feb. 23, 1921, at Carthage. She lived most of her life in Joplin. She was a secretary for 18 years at the former Hardy Sheet Metal Co. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Jim Kendall, Joplin; a daughter, Sally Walker, Springdale, Ark.; a brother, Charles C. Clark, Tulsa, Okla.; and three grandsons.
Private graveside services were held at noon Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery, Webb City.
Contributions may be made to the Claude Hulsey Memorial Scholarship at Franklin Technology Center.
Wayne Phillips
Wayne L. Phillips, 68, 4016 Pennsylvania Ave., died at 2:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 1997, at a local nursing home after a long illness.
Mr. Phillips was born July 8, 1928 at Nekoma, Kan. He had lived in Joplin since 1941. He was a farmer and had worked for several years for Vickers Inc., Joplin. He worked for the Postal Service for 28 years and retired in 1988 as a clerk. He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and the National Association of Retired Postal Employees. He was a Methodist. He served in the Army during the Korean War.
He married Bonnie Staib on March 14, 1952, at Bentonville, Ark. She survives.
Additional survivors include three daughters, Diana Phillips, Kansas City; Cindy Hartman, Tulsa, Okla., and Linda Stous, Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Melvin Phillips, Rush Center, Kan.; two sisters, Fonda Howard, Coffeyville, Kan., and Geneva Pivonka, Larned, Kan.; two grandsons, and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Parker Mortuary, Joplin. The Rev. Max Bishop will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin.
Pallbearers will be Terry Ridgeway, Tom Colpher, Tom Blankenship, Larry Murphy, Bob Sade and Charlie Clay.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to St. John's Hospice, Joplin, in care of the funeral home.
Bernice Snyder
Bernice Snyder, 72, 1616 Kentucky Ave., died at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, at a Joplin nursing center.
Mrs. Snyder was born June 3, 1924, at Indianapolis, Ind. She had been a Joplin resident since 1932, when she moved from Siloam Springs, Ark. She was an inspector for LaBarge Electronics, Joplin, for 35 years. She was a member of the Gospel Assembly, Joplin.
Survivors include a son, Ermal E. "Gene" Snyder, Neosho; two daughters, Wanda L. Martin, Joplin, and Vida M. Barnett, Copperas Cove, Texas; a sister, Josephine Wilson, Carterville; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. The Rev. Charles Mays will officiate. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park, Joplin.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Snyder, Stephen Snyder, Brian M. Swain, Nathan Winters, Jerry Martin and Richard Jeffers.
Contributions may be made to the Gospel Assembly in care of the mortuary.
Larry Tarvin
Larry E. Tarvin, 51, Joplin, died at 2:40 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 1997, at a local nursing home after a long illness.
Mr. Tarvin was born Dec. 17, 1945, at Parsons, Kan. He lived the past two months in Joplin. He moved from the Kansas City area, where he lived most of his life. He was a toll collector. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Service Medal. He was a member of the First Cavalry Division. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Kansas City and the Kansas City chapter of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club.
Survivors include a son, Russell Tarvin, Asbury; two brothers, Emil Tarvin, Kansas City, and Glen Tarvin, Claremore, Okla.; and five sisters, Rosie Ishmael, Virginia Petrin and Terry Farmer, all of Kansas City, Kan., Annie Ogle, Newcastle, Okla., and Wilma Jamison, Bellevue, Wash.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Parker Mortuary. The Rev. Doug Wilkerson will officiate.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Fort Scott, Kan., National Cemetery.
Charlotte Adams
CARTHAGE, Mo. - Charlotte Arlene Adams, 75, Carthage, died at 8:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 1997, at McCune Brooks Hospital after a long illness.
Mrs. Adams was born Oct. 22, 1921 at Monte Vista, Colo. She had been an area resident for 50 years. She moved to Carthage from Neosho. She was a licensed nurse at McCune Brooks and retired in 1989. She attended First Christian Church, Carthage. She was a member of the Nurses' Association and the Business and Professional Women's Club, both in Carthage.
Surviving are a son, Willard Adams, Joplin; and a daughter, Shirley Roehl, Carthage; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage. Bob Lyttle, minister, will officiate. Burial will be at Jasper Cemetery, east of Carthage.
Zella Bilke
SENECA, Mo. - Zella Bilke, 87, Harrison, Ark., a longtime resident of Seneca, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 25, 1997, at North Arkansas Medical Center, Harrison, after a long illness.
Mrs. Bilke was born Nov. 13, 1909, in Grove. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She worked and was a member of Older Adult Transportation Service, Joplin. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, north of Seneca. Her husband, John H. Bilke, died in 1974.
Surviving are two sons, Paul E. Bilke, Omaha, Ark., and Harold D. Bilke, Harrison; a daughter, Margie A. Lawson, Fallon, Nev.; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca. The Rev. Fred Mills will officiate. Burial will be in Hornet community Cemetery, south of Joplin.
Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
