Freda Quade
MOUNT VERNON, Mo. - Freda Quade, 75, Mount Vernon, died at 8:59 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 1997 at her home after a sudden illness. Mrs. Quade was born Jan. 8, 1922, at Westboro. She had lived in Mount Vernon most of her life and was a member of First Christian Church, Mount Vernon. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, Steve Smith, Mount Vernon; a daughter, Linda Bruntzel, Lenexa, Kan.; a sister, Veva Weaver, Mount Vernon; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Private services will be at 2 p.m. today at Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, with the Rev. Mark Killingsworth officiating. The body has been cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
Wayne Shorter
LOCKWOOD, Mo. - Wayne Shorter, 72, Lockwood, died at 1:55 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1997, at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, after a short illness. Mr. Shorter was born July 9, 1924, at Mountain Grove. He owned Shorter and Sons trucking company for many years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lockwood and Lockwood Lions Club. He married Ruth Mason on Nov. 1, 1947, at Mountain Home, Ark. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Wayne Shorter Jr., Jim Shorter and Mike Shorter, all of Lockwood; three brothers, Harland Shorter, New Port Richey, Fla., Ansel Shorter and Jack Shorter, both of Colville, Wash., two sisters, Neoma Gribble, Centralia, Wash., and Elaine Caskey, Mountain Grove; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Lockwood. The Rev. Cameron Moles and the Rev. Otis Divine will officiate. Burial will be in Lockwood Cemetery. The Roy E. Carr American Legion Post will perform military rites. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Lockwood Funeral Chapel. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
William Stone
ANDERSON, Mo. - William H. Stone, 88, Anderson, died at 1:08 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997, at Freeman Neosho Hospital after an illness.
Mr. Stone was born Feb. 7, 1909, at Clinton.
He was graduated from the University of Missouri.
He was a merchant, mayor and president of the school board at Wheaton.
He retired from the contracts division of the former Teledyne plant at Neosho in 1981.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Anderson.
He was a lieutenant colonel and received two Bronze Stars and a Legion of Merit award during his service in Europe during World War II.
He married Mary Bell Barnes on Feb. 7, 1941, at Anderson.
She survives.
Additional survivors include a son, William B. Stone, St. Louis; a daughter, Katherine Barton, Oak Grove; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Anderson, with Tom Ellis, minister, and the Rev. Dean Royce officiating.
Burial will be in Anderson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Barnes, George Brace, Larry Barnes, Mike Thompson, Bill Pearcy and Gary Fanny.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ozark Funeral Home, Anderson.
Contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund, in care of the funeral home.
Randy vonStetten
Randolph Scott "Randy" vonStetten, 38, Joplin, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center where he had been a patient for three days.
The death is being investigated by the Joplin Police Department.
Mr. vonStetten was born Dec. 8, 1958, at Enid, Okla.
He moved to Joplin in 1992 from Tulsa, Okla.
He was a graduate of Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, where he majored in communications.
He worked as a disc jockey in Tulsa for KWEN, K-95 FM.
He later worked for Pepsi, Inc., in Tulsa before being transferred to Joplin as a district manager.
In 1994, he founded and was presently operating Inc.
Communications of Joplin and Carthage.
He was a member of the Joplin Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his parents, Arthur "Art" and Margaret vonStetten, Tulsa; a brother, Vincent vonStetten, Tulsa; a sister, Donna Lechner, Broken Arrow, Okla.; maternal grandmother, Marjoriestet Scott, Wichita, Kan.; and paternal grandfather, Arthur G. vonStetten, Philadelphia, Pa.
Arrangements are pending with Parker Mortuary.
Contributions may be made to the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Wichita, Kan.
Rachel Bunch
WEBB CITY, Mo. - Rachel L. Bunch, 92, 708 N. Tom St., Webb City, died at 8:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997, at Freeman Hospital West, Joplin, after a short illness.
Mrs. Bunch was born July 17, 1904, at Washburn.
She had lived in Webb City since 1948, moving here from Pineville.
She was employed as a school teacher for 20 years at several schools in McDonald County.
She later worked for the S.H. Kress Dime Store, Webb City, and the Carver Nursery, Joplin.
She then worked for the state's foster grandparents program.
She retired in 1990. She attended Liberty Baptist Church and Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar, and Ozark Christian College.
She married J. Earl Bunch in December 1925 in Washburn.
He died in February 1966.
A daughter preceded her in death.
She is survived by three sons, Jimmie Earl Bunch, Nashville, Tenn., Gary Earl Bunch, and D.B. Bunch, both of Joplin; two sisters, Georgie Kamp, Neosho, and Willa Bowman, Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home.
The Rev. Gene Needham will officiate.
Burial will be in Webb City Cemetery under the direction of Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Scott Bunch, Jimmie Earl Bunch Jr., Aaron Bunch, Chris Bunch, Johnnie Conrow and Dolphus D. Riggs.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the Roller Cemetery Association, Washburn.
The family will be at the home at 708 N. Tom.
Oren Gates
MONETT, Mo. - Oren William Gates, 61, Monett, died at 8:20 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, after a sudden illness.
Mr. Gates was born May 28, 1935, in Monett.
He was a lifelong local resident.
He was an Army veteran and a former worker at Ramey's Supermarket, Monett.
He was a Baptist.
Survivors include two brothers, Billy Gates, Battlefield, and Junior Gates, Wheatland; and two sisters, Charlotte Gates, Monett, and Rosalyn Prichard, Douglas, Kan.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the IOOF Cemetery, Monett.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Bennett-Wormington Funeral Home, Monett.
Elnora Kelly
STELLA, Mo. - Elnora Kelly, 78, formerly of Stella, died Monday, Feb. 24, 1997, at Cascade Locks, Ore., after a sudden illness.
Ms. Kelly was born Oct. 12, 1918.
She was reared in Powell and later moved to Stella.
She moved to the state of Oregon in the early 1960s.
Survivors include two daughters, Colleen Smith, Anderson, and Sharon Senter, Camas, Wash.; two brothers, Jack McFarland and Jay McFarland, both of Stella; three sisters, Belva Wescot, Anderson, Della Hines, Powell, and Leola Sharrod, Bandon, Ore.; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Services were held in the state of Oregon.
Local arrangements were handled by the Ozark Funeral Home, Anderson.
