Martha Chandler
CARTHAGE, Mo. - Martha Gertrude Chandler, 76, Carthage, died at 1:13 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, after a short illness.
Mrs. Chandler was born April 8, 1920, at Jasper County.
She graduated in 1939 from Sarcoxie (Mo.) High School.
She had lived the last 34 years in Carthage, moving from Sarcoxie.
She worked 18 years at St. Luke's Nursing Home, Carthage, retiring in 1990.
She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church, rural Sarcoxie.
She married Faye Chandler on March 3, 1940, at Jasper County.
He preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Don Chandler, Independence, and Paul Chandler, Lenior City, Tenn.; two daughters, Lana Williams, Diamond, and Sue Novacich, Edwardsville, Ill.; a brother, Bob Triplett, Sarcoxie; a sister, Lavon Maddox, Columbia; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Housh Funeral Home, Sarcoxie.
The Rev. Kenneth Holman will officiate.
Burial will be in Sarcoxie Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Chandler, Scott Sperry, Adam Williams, Eddie Gillett, Larry Don Triplett and Mike Pollard.
Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Margaret McNier
LAMAR - Memorial services for Margaret Pearl Miller McNier, who died Feb. 18, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lake Cemetery, Lamar.
The Rev. Cliff Crockett will officiate.
The body has been cremated.
Arrangements are under the direction of Daniel Funeral Home, Lamar.
Gayle Terrell
GREENFIELD, Mo. - Gayle Thomason Terrell, 86, Greenfield, died Saturday, March 1, 1997, at her home after a short illness.
Mrs. Terrell was born Jan. 24, 1911.
She was a retired nurse's aide and a homemaker.
She was a member of Hampton Presbyterian Church, Everton.
She was a 40-year member of the Eastern Star, Greenfield.
She was also a hospice volunteer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Terry, in 1978.
Two daughters also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Fay Terrell, Independence, and Jack Terrell, Ash Grove; a brother, Winfred Tommy Thomason, Springfield; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Greenfield Funeral Home.
Burial will be at Hampton Cemetery, north of Everton.
Contributions may be made to Hospice of Dade County, in care of the funeral home.
Horace Pigg
Y. Pigg, 81, 4401 Missouri St., died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at his home of natural causes.
Mr. Pigg was born Oct. 2, 1915 in Henry County, Mo. He had been a Joplin resident since 1942.
He was the maintenance superintendent at Gulf Oil Fertilizer Plant, Pittsburg, Kan., from 1942 until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of South Joplin Christian Church.
He married Liberty D. Evans on Nov. 1, 1935 at Newkirk, Okla. She died Dec. 6, 1985.
Survivors include two sons, Larry H. Pigg, Cincinatti, Ohio; Garry L. Pigg, Mandeville, La.; a daughter, Phoebe Ann Harp, Jonesboro, Ark.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin. the Rev. Larry Pigg will officiate.
Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary from 1 p.m. Tuesday until service time.
Contributions may be made to South Joplin Christian Church.
Robert Dale
CARTHAGE, Mo. - Robert S. Dale, 79, Carthage route 3, died at 7:10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 1997, at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Dale was born Nov. 23, 1917, at Carthage.
He graduated in 1935 from Carthage Senior High School and in 1939 from University of Missouri-Columbia.
He was a former editor and publisher of The Carthage Press, retiring in 1976.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
He was a retired Missouri Army National Guard brigadier general.
He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club, both of Carthage.
He was active in several public service organizations and had served on several boards of directors.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage.
He married Alice Maughs on Dec. 26, 1940, at Columbia. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Kathy Atwood, St. Louis, Julie Dale, Dallas, Texas, and Susan Neely, Carthage; and five grandchildren.
Contributions may be made to Hospice at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, the student loan fund at Grace Episcopal Church, American Cancer Society or Fair Acres Family YMCA, in care of Knell Mortuary.
Arrangements are pending.
Joe Mayfield Sr.
PIERCE CITY, Mo. - Joe Mayfield Sr., 74, 26149 Elder Road, died at 11:10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, after a short illness.
Mr. Mayfield was born May 16, 1922, at Blytheville, Ark.
He was a retired auto mechanic and sold vegetables the last 10 years at Elwood Flea Market, west of Granby.
He moved in 1976 to the Pierce City area from California.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
He married Wilma Irene Nunnally on Feb. 14, 1941, at Blytheville. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Joe Mayfield Jr. and Keith Mayfield, both of Joplin; a daughter, Katherine Joyce Fore, Granby; two sisters, Marrion Berks, Conway, Ark., and Evelyn Jackson, San Marcos, Texas; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Clark Funeral Home, Granby.
The Rev. Fred Franks will officiate.
Burial will be in Granby Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Bulkey, Terry Hurn, Steve Robinson, Mike Moore, Larry Joe Jones and Mark Heidlage.
Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Margaret McClendon
LIBERAL, Mo. - Margaret "Dottie" McClendon, 93, rural Liberal, died at 4:05 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, 1997, at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. McClendon was born Oct. 11, 1903 near Liberal.
She lived in the Liberal area all of her life.
She was a homemaker and worked at the Liberal Post Office from 1953 until her retirement in 1965.
She was a member of Banner Quilting Club.
She married Aubrey A. "Putt" McClendon on March 19, 1928, at Mapleton, Kan. He died May 6, 1989.
Survivors include a son, Jim McClendon, Liberal; a daughter, Jean Lambert, Marshall, Va.; a brother, Charles V. Curless, Osage Beach; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lohymeyer-Konantz Chapel, Lamar. The Rev. Frank Loehr will officiate.
Burial will be in Barton City Cemetery.
