Wilma Bragg
STARK CITY, Mo. - Wilma Faye Bragg, 57, Stark City, was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m. Sunday at her home. The death is being investigated as a homicide.
Mrs. Bragg was born Aug. 3, 1939, at San Jon, N.M. She moved to the Stark City area in 1971 from Gallup, N.M.
She was a dietitian and clerk at Cox Medical Center, Monett.
She was a member of Ritchey Baptist Church, Ritchey.
Survivors include two daughters, Vickie Guinn, Stella, and Sharon Perkins, Joplin; a son, Roy Bragg, Stark City; a brother, Tommy Gene Pointer, Russellville, Ark.; three sisters, Helen Patterson and Dorothy Shaw, both of Belen, N.M., and Devilla Gunter, Wheaton; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Clark Funeral Home, Granby. The Rev. Dennis Burge will officiate.Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery, Stella.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Dorthy Collins
PARIS SPRINGS, Mo. - Dorthy Collins, 85, Paris Springs, died at 11:05 a.m. Sunday, March 9, 1997, at a Springfield nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Collins was born Dec. 27, 1911, at Aurora. She was a homemaker. She attended the Paris Springs Methodist Church.
She married George Collins in October 1927 at Mount Vernon. He died April 19, 1984.
Survivors include six daughters, Mary Morris and Millie Funk, both of Kansas City, Retha Ethridge, Springfield, Goldie Keenan, Marshfield, Dorothy Eutsler, Ash Grove, and Ann Hatch, Republic; a brother, Arthur Gardner, Strafford; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Morris-Leiman-Mosher Funeral Home, Miller. The Rev. Jim Downing will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, north of Bois D' Arc.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today.
John Crowell
PIERCE CITY, Mo. - John Joseph Crowell, 59, Pierce City, died at 7:10 a.m. Monday, March 10, 1997, at his home after a short illness.
Mr. Crowell was born Dec. 2, 1937, at Pierce City. He was a retired farmer and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Joe P. Crowell, Pierce City; a daughter, Roxanne Sommerfeld, Midlothian, Texas; and three grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Dan Hertz will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Wessell Funeral Home, Pierce City, where visitation will follow.
Anna Lawrence
LAMAR, Mo. - Anna Bell Lawrence, 85, Lamar, died at 12:15 p.m. Monday, March 10, 1997, at Barton County Memorial Hospital, Lamar, after a short illness.
Mrs. Lawrence was born Feb. 23, 1912 in Barton County. She was a lifetime resident of the Barton County area. She was a homemaker and farmer.
She married Virgil F. Lawrence on Dec. 21, 1929, at Girard, Kan. He died Dec. 10, 1990.
Survivors include a brother, Charlie Butler, Washington.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar. The Rev. Clif Crockett will officiate. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Eric Lawrence, Kenny Levaugh, Dave Blackford, John Lawrence, Harel Lawrence and Danny Little.
Emily Schultz
Emily C. Schultz, 89, Neosho, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 7, 1997, at a Neosho nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Schultz was born May 30, 1907 in Mankato, Minn. She received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Minnesota. She worked at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for 16 years. She participated in some of the early work with antibiotics for tuberculosis.
She was active in Diamond PTA, the Diamond and Neosho United Methodist churches and the Unitarian Church in St. Louis. In Neosho she was elected a member of the Newton County Health Board and state health chairwoman of the Federated Women's Club. She was a member of the Joplin branch of the American Association of University Women. She was also a member of the Neosho Travel Club and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a volunteer staff person at Newton County Historical Museum and treasurer of George Washington Carver Birthplace Association for nine years.
She married Clarence Schultz in November, 1946. He died in 1971.
Survivors include two sons, Carl Schultz, El Paso, Texas, and John Schultz, Joplin; a daughter, Martha Schultz, Troy, New York; two brothers, Cornelius Smith, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Sidney Smith, Rogersville, Tenn.; and a sister, Naomi Alice Bernick, Kiryat Ata, Israel.
The body will be cremated. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
Contributions may be made to Newton County Historical Society, in care of the funeral home.
Tony Smith
CARTHAGE, Mo. - Anthony "Tony" Gene Smith, 53, Rosamond, Calif., formerly of Carthage, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, at Antelope Valley Hospital, Antelope Valley Calif., after a long illness.
Mr. Smith was born June 18, 1943, at Carthage. He attended schools in Carthage. He served in the Army and was stationed in Germany from 1965 to 1968.
He married Lois Kennelly in 1992 in the state of Colorado. She died in 1996.
Survivors include his parents, Martha and James E. Slater, Carthage; a daughter, Theresa Rose, Carl Junction; two stepsons, Robert Kennelly, Rosamond, Calif., and Johnny Larson, Arvada, Colo.; four sisters, Shirley Thornburg and Mabel Smith, both of Carthage, Jo Boggs, Cherryvale, Kan., and Toni Carter, Carterville; three brothers, James F. Slater, Sarcoxie, and Don Slater and Ray Slater, both of Webb City, and three grandchildren.
The body will be cremated. Services are pending with Antelope Valley Cremation Services.
Irma Swanson
RACINE, Mo. - Irma C. Swanson, 84, Wichita, formerly of Racine, Mo., died Sunday, March 9, 1997, at Via Christi/ St. Francis Medical Center after an illness.
Mrs. Swanson was born May 7, 1912 in Wichita. She worked as a grocer in Racine, Mo.
She married Howard Leslie Swanson on Oct. 11, 1931 at Marysville, Kan. He died Aug. 18, 1982.
Surviving are a son, Eugene C. Swanson, Wichita; a daughter, Mary L. Briggs, Wichita; six grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cochran Mortuary, Wichita. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Burkhart Cemetery, Racine.
Alma Turner
LIBERAL, Mo. - Alma Virginia Turner, 94, Liberal, died at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 1997, at a Frontenac, Kan., nursing home after a short illness.
Mrs. Turner was born Sept. 13, 1902, at Mulberry, Kan. She had lived most of her life in the Mulberry and Arcadia, Kan., areas and at later Liberal. She also lived a few years in the state of Washington, where she worked in a shipyard at Bremerton during World War II.
She was a graduate of Arcadia High School. She was a schoolteacher at Gross, Kan., and Oskaloosa.
She operated Liberal Cafe in the 1950s. She also was a school cook for several years at Liberal. She worked many years for Sechrist Hardware.
She was a member of Liberal United Methodist Church, and Order of Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge, both of Lamar.
She married Roy Stevenson Turner on Jan. 27, 1923. He died Feb. 1, 1965.
Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Farmer, Liberal, and Shirley Fast, Lamar; a son, Allen Turner, Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Margaret Cox, Troy, Mich., and Georgia McDougall, Ludlow, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter preceded her in death.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Cemetery, northwest of Liberal. The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. today at Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar.
