He was born Aug. 16, 1950, in West Point, Miss., and lived most of his earlier years in Aberdeen, Miss.
He had lived in Rolla for the past 13 years.
He was an industrial engineer.
He was a graduate of Aberdeen High School, a graduate of the Mississippi State University School of Engineering, received his master's degree at Webster University and a Ph.D. ADA from Nova University.
He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was a member of the Army Engineers Regimen Association.
He was a member of the Aberdeen First United Methodist Church.

George William Sampson
Funeral service for George William Sampson was February 25, 2008 at Wilson Mortuary Chapel, Salem, with Bro. Mike Cronk and Bro. Nick Smith officiating.
A special love song was sung and a tribute to George was by Harlene Sampson.
Vocal music was by Judy Light, Karen Hane and Philip Giacomelli.
Interment was in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Terry and Keith Ives, Hershel Light, Brad Ives, Rusty Dennis and Larry Galloway.
Honorary pallbearers were Donald, Pete and Gary Dale Sampson; Larry Buettner; Mike Hane; John Graham; and Bob Douglas.
Mr. Sampson was born June 11, 1946 in Crawford County to Lester I. and Mary Jane (Hollingshead) Sampson.
He married Harlene Ives June 13, 1964.
They were the parents of two children.
Mr. Sampson died February 21, 2008 in Rolla at the age of 61 years.
Survivors include his wife, Harlene Sampson, Salem; two children, Sonnya Hayes and husband, Jimmy, Salem; and Travis Sampson, Salem; three brothers, Donald Sampson and wife, Lydia, Leasburg; Daniel "Pete" Sampson, Texas state; and Gary Dale Sampson, Cuba; one sister, Joyce Cox and friend, Leonard, Bourbon; three grandchildren, Erica Graham and husband, John, O'Fallon; Rachelle Hayes and Tiffany Hayes, both of Salem; mother and father-in-law, Hazel and Bob Douglas, Salem; two brothers-in-law, Terry Ives and wife, Linda, Salem; and Keith Ives and wife, Debra, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; two sisters-in-law, Karen Hane and husband, Mike, Salem; and Judy Light and husband, Hershel, Steelville; and a host of nieces; nephews; and extended relatives.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his father-in-law, Harles Ives; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth Cox.
Mr. Sampson attended the Pentecostal Church of God.
