Kate Cooney
NEOSHO, Mo. - Kate Cooney, 86, Mesa, Ariz., a former Neosho resident, died Monday afternoon, March 17, 1997, at a nursing home in Mesa after one year of ill health.
Miss Cooney was born Dec. 19, 1910, in Neosho.
She had lived in the Neosho and Joplin areas most of her life.
She moved to Arizona in the early 1990s.
She was a homemaker.
There are no immediate survivors.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Gibson Cemetery, Neosho.
The Rev. Ralph Walker will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
Loyd Hunt Sr.
DUENWEG, Mo. - Loyd W. Hunt Sr., 73, 607 Dutch St., died at 8:56 p.m. Monday, March 17, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, after a seven-month illness.
Mr. Hunt was born Feb. 18, 1924, at Spring City. He was a World War II Army veteran and a lumberyard laborer. He was a Jehovah's Witness.
Surviving are a son, Loyd W. Hunt Jr., Diamond route 1; a daughter, May Smith, Joplin; two brothers, Rex Hunt, Joplin, and Delmar Hunt, state of Texas; two sisters, Edith Cox, Joplin, and Virginia McCloud, Carterville; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Simpson Funeral Home, Webb City, and memorial services will follow. Richard Brown, minister, will officiate. The body will be cremated after the services.
Robert Owen
NOEL, Mo. - Robert C. "Bob" Owen, 78, Noel route 2, died at 2 a.m. Monday, March 17, 1997, at Freeman Hospital West, Joplin, after complications following surgery.
Mr. Owen was born Feb. 16, 1919, at Chicago, Ill. He moved to Noel in 1970 from Forest Park, Ill. He was an aerospace engineer for Northrop Aviation, Rolling Meadows, Ill., for 15 years. He later owned and operated Arthur Murray's Hotel in Noel for 14 years.
He was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, Noel, and was a third order Franciscan. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He married June King on Feb. 8, 1941, at Chicago, Ill. She survives.
Additional survivors include four daughters, Kathleen Costello and Betty Gordon, both of Noel, Susan Moore, Lombard, Ill., and Nancy Pape, Villa Park, Ill.; two sisters, Ellen Elwart, Wheaton, Ill., and Maureen Rio, Portage, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, Noel. The Rev. John Harth will officiate. Burial will be in Noel Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Moore, Sam Pape, Dave Moore, Scott Owen, John Calhoun and Gary Davis.
Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at Ozark Funeral Home, Noel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to the Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church building fund, in care of the funeral home.
Georgia Shunk
NEOSHO, Mo. - Georgia Alberta Shunk, 94, Neosho, died at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 1997, at a Neosho nursing home after an illness.
Mrs. Shunk was born Oct. 29, 1902, in Joplin and was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker and a member of Neosho Calvary Baptist Church.
Her husband, Frank Shunk, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a brother, Howard Hillis, Talent, Ore.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Neosho IOOF Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Gingrich will officiate.
Friends may call after noon today at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
Contributions may be made to the Neosho Medicalodge activity fund.
Juanita Thompson
MOUNT VERNON, Mo. - Juanita M. Williams Thompson, 85, Mount Vernon, died at 5:20 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 1997, at a local nursing home after an 18-month illness.
Mrs. Thompson was born Feb. 25, 1912, in the state of Oklahoma. She had lived in Webb City before she moved to Mount Vernon. She worked as a supervisor in the clothing industry.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Webb City.
Her husband, O.W. Thompson, died Aug. 14, 1989.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Thompson, Aurora, and O.W. Thompson, Sacramento, Calif.; two daughters, Wanda Barnett, Palm Springs, Calif., and Peggy Ackerman, Hye, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin, with the Rev. Damian Boeding officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home, Webb City.
Bessie Evilsizer
Bessie M. Evilsizer, 86, 4542 Old Highway 71, died at 1:40 a.m. Sunday, March 23, 1997, at a local nursing home after a short illness.
Mrs. Evilsizer was born Sept. 18, 1910, near Grove, Okla. She had lived since 1976 in the Joplin area, moving from the state of Montana. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She married Clarence Evilsizer on Jan. 29, 1929, at Miami, Okla. He survives.
Additional survivors include a son, Tom Evilsizer, Lawton, Okla.; a daughter, Sharon Durels, New York, N.Y.; a sister, Jo Allen, Los Angeles, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery, Lawton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Becker Funeral Home, Lawton.
Local arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary, Joplin.
Florence Harbaugh
Ruby Florence Harbaugh, 82, 2107 Murphy Ave., died at 7:20 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 1997, at her home after a long illness.
Ms. Harbaugh was born Aug. 5, 1914 at Carterville. She was a lifelong area resident. She formerly worked at Freeman Hospital in the linen supply department. She retired in 1981. She was a member of the Blendville Christian Church and the Goodwill Class of the church.
Survivors include a brother, Delbert Harbaugh, Joplin; and a sister, Betty Cogbill, Joplin.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Osborne Memorial Cemetery.
The Rev. Kyle Gardner will officiate.
