Phyllis Jeffords
MOUNT VERNON, Mo. - Phyllis Jeffords, 79, Mount Vernon, died at 7:50 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 1996, at an acquaintance's Mount Vernon route 2 home after a sudden illness.
Miss Jeffords was born Feb. 4, 1917, at Mount Vernon.
She was a lifelong Mount Vernon resident.
She was a retired dietary aide at Missouri Rehabilitation Center, Mount Vernon.
Survivors include two sisters, Maxine Hensiek, Mount Vernon, and Floy Adamson, Fortuna, Calif.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Assemblies of God Church, Mount Vernon.
The Rev. Tharell Boulware will officiate.
Burial will be in Summit Cemetery, northwest of Mount Vernon.
Pallbearers will be Pat Elsey, Derrick Barnes, Paul Mullins, Jack Hooker, Randy Conaway and Kent Waggoner.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.
John Johnston
ANDERSON, Mo. - John R. Johnston, 70, Anderson, died at 7:20 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, at his home after an illness.
Mr. Johnston was born June 14, 1926, at Milford, Kan.
He moved to Anderson about seven years ago from Milford.
He was a heavy-equipment operator for several years.
He married Erma Eaton on Dec. 23, 1966, at Newton, Texas. She survives.
Additional survivors include four sons, Douglas Johnston, of the home, Darrell Johnston, Noel, Johnny Welsch, Chapman, Kan., and Dick Woodson, Tulsa, Okla.; his father, Harold Johnston, Noel; three brothers, William Johnston, Noel, Dale Johnston, Topeka, Kan., Robert Johnston, Dadeville, Ala.; and several grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ozark Funeral Home, Anderson.
Sam Carper, minister, will officiate.
Burial will be in Anderson Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dick Woodson, Billie Johnston, Bill Johnston, Johnny Welsh, Dale Johnston and Bob Johnston.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. today until service time at the funeral home.
Celia Mitchell
JASPER, Mo. - Celia Darlene Mitchell, 72, Jasper, died at 3:55 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 1996, at a nursing home in Lamar after a long illness.
Mrs. Mitchell was born Jan. 23, 1924, at Carthage.
She moved to California in 1946, to Kansas in 1971, and to Jasper in 1980.
She had worked for Amaco Oil Company in the state of California and in real estate in the state of Kansas.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Jasper United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Woman's Auxiliary No. 6415 at Jasper.
She married Frank Mitchell on Feb. 20, 1946, at El Monte, Calif. He survives.
Additional survivors include a son, Roy Mitchell, Jasper; a daughter, Nancy Swanson, Houston, Texas; two brothers, Jesse Zaerr Jr. and Kenneth Zaerr, both of Jasper; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Jasper United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Tim Lee will officiate.
Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery, south of Jasper.
Arrangements are under the direction of Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper.
Eula Moore
MOUNT VERNON, Mo. - Eula Lillian Moore, 86, Gladstone, formerly of Mount Vernon, died at 4:40 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 1996, at a Gladstone nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Moore was born Oct. 20, 1910, in Stone County.
She lived in Mount Vernon from the age of 16 until 1993, when she moved to Gladstone.
She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Theo Moore, died in 1971.
Survivors include a son, Don Moore, Mount Vernon; a daughter, June Lowry, Kansas City; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.
The Rev. Jerry Zanker will officiate.
Burial will be in Mount Vernon IOOF Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Randy Short, Mike Kruse, Dennis Stratman, Danny DiSalvo, David Smith and R.J. Moore.
Ernest Newman
GOLDEN CITY, Mo. - Ernest R. Newman, 85, Golden City, died at 9:05 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 1996, at a nursing home in Lockwood after a long illness.
Mr. Newman was born March 18, 1911, at El Dorado Springs.
He raised, sold and showed prize dairy cattle and spotted Polland China hogs.
He was a member of First Baptist Church at Golden City, where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and superintendent.
He married Irene Brown on Feb. 16, 1936, in rural Lockwood. She survives.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Lois St.John and Joyce Beerly, both of Golden City; three brothers, Don Newman, Jasper, Dewey Newman, Carthage, and Lee Newman, Golden City; a sister, Louise Woods, Lockwood; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Golden City.
The Rev. Arthur Rogers will officiate.
Burial will be in Dudenville (Mo.) Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home, Golden City.

John Philliber
NEOSHO, Mo. - John V. Philliber, 68, Jefferson City, formerly of Neosho, died Monday, Dec. 23, 1996, at Boone Hospital Center, Columbia.
Mr. Philliber was born Sept. 16, 1928, at Neosho.
He attended Neosho High School, Northeast Oklahoma University at Miami, Okla., and Southwestern Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas.
He was ordained as a Baptist minister on July 6, 1947, and had pastored several Missouri churches.
He currently was pastor of Elston Baptist Church.
A member of the founding board of directors of the Water and Wastewater Technical School at Neosho, he retired in 1991 as vice president and district manager of the Capital City Water Co.
He had been employed there since 1973 after serving as director of public works at Boonville.
He was a member and past chairman of American Water Works Association, was a past chairman of Missouri Section of the American Water Works Association and had received the Kramer Technical Achievement.
He received numerous awards for his achievements in the field and for his service in the association.
He also was a member and a past president of Jefferson City Kiwanis Club, was a member of Joplin Masonic Lodge AF&AM and Abou Ben Adhem Temple.
He married Rose Mary Tomlin on Nov. 25, 1948, at Neosho. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sondra Allen, Jefferson City, and Connie Bryson, Hot Springs, Ark.; a sister, Lenora Landreth, Newtonia; a brother, George Philliber, Renton, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Jefferson City.
The Rev. John Scott McCallum II and the Rev. Earl Hoskins will officiate.
Entombment will be in the mausoleum of Hawthorn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

Alta Shelton
GOODMAN, Mo. - Alta Erma Allen Shelton, 89, Goodman, died at 12:01 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 1996, at a Neosho nursing home after an illness.
Mrs. Shelton was born May 17, 1907, at Neosho.
She lived in the Goodman area all her life.
She had owned and operated Goodman Cafe at Goodman and was a homemaker.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Goodman and was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary.
She married George Ervin Shelton on June 25, 1923. He died Aug. 14, 1981.
Survivors include a son, Leslie James Shelton, Goodman; a daughter, Margie Wise, Carrollton; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Goodman.
The Rev. Reese Morrow will officiate.
Burial will be in Neosho Memorial Park Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday at the church.
