Harry A. Vinton, 89, of Springfield, Mo., died July 12, 2003 in St. John's Regional Health Center. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Harry and Anna (Dieringer) Vinton and married Elizabeth Fairall on July 22, 1947. They retired to Florida 25 years ago and moved to Missouri in 2001. Harry graduated from Dormont High School and attended Waynesburg College. He was the owner of Vinton's Card & Gift Shop in Whitehall Shopping Center, Pittsburgh, and was president and part owner of Melton Bake Shop and Whitehall Travel Co. He was a christian and a veteran of World War II. He was a Master Mason, a member and Past Master of Lodge 45, F. & A.M., the oldest Lodge west of the Allegheny Mountains. The Grand Master of Pennsylvania chose him to organize a new Lodge, Whitehall Lodge #749 F. & A.M., and he was the First Worshipful Master and a Life Member. He was also a Life Member of SYRIA Temple and a Life Member of Scottish Rite, Valley of Pittsburgh, where he was awarded the MERITORIOUS SERVICE Award in 1963. He was nominated and received the 33rd DEGREE of Freemasonry in 1973 at Detroit, Michigan. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty); two children, Marilyn Douglass and her husband, Nick, and Richard Vinton and his wife, Denise; and three grandchildren, Olivia Douglass and Austin and Eileen Vinton. Private family services will be at a later date in Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, Springfield.
Christian Michael Friedhofen
Christian Michael Friedhofen, 26, Springfield, passed away July 13, 2003 in Springfield. He was born February 9, 1977 in Wiesbaden, Germany. He graduated from Parkview High School in 1995. After graduation he spent time in the Army as an Apache helicopter flight engineer. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Walter R. Friedhofen. He is survived by his wife, Andrea; and a son, Walter "Will"; his father, Walter Friedhofen and wife, Sharon, Springfield; mother, Janet Zink and husband, Randy, Knob Knoster, MO; a brother Walter R. "Randy" Friedhofen, Warrensburg, MO; grandmother, Dieudonnee "Dany" Friedhofen; stepbrother, Tim Smith, Tulsa, OK; step-sisters, Kathy Mann and husband, Josh, Kansas City, and Sarah Fraker and husband, Garrett, Springfield. Also surviving are his mother and father-in-law, Emma and Bob Yount; a brother-in-law, Bob Yount; and a sister-in-law, Iva Sanders. He is also survived by his unborn son. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel with Pastor Charles Gackstetter officiating. Burial will follow in Hazelwood Cemetery. No visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a trust fund which has been established for his children at Metro Credit Union, 447 S. Campbell, Springfield, MO 65806.
William F. Robertson
William Finis Robertson, 90, Republic, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2003 in Christian Health Care, Republic. He was born on May 7, 1913 to Marvin and Zade (Short) Robertson in Christian County, MO. He married Gladys Lucille Wallace, November 29, 1936, who preceded him in death. He was a longtime member of Westside Christian Church. Others who preceded him in death were his parents and a sister, Delores Sanders and her husband Alvin. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Mary and John West, Paola, KS, Bill and Mary Sue Robertson, Republic, MO, Judy and Pete Walz, Jefferson City, MO, and Linda and Gene Albrecht, Mount Zion, IL; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister and her spouse, Marvie Lee and Leo Napier, Paola, KS; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2003 in Meadors Funeral Home, Republic, with Brothers Stanley White and Jim Haenig officiating. Burial will follow in Lindsey Cemetery, Republic. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Westside Christian Church, Republic, MO.
Thomas L. Downing
Thomas L. Downing, 49, the son of John and Dorthea Worrell Downing was born January 9, 1954. He passed away on Friday evening, July 11, 2003 in his home following a four-month illness. Tom was born in LaCygne, Kan., and formerly lived in Prescott, Kan., before moving to Ash Grove in 1980. He was employed with Ash Grove Farm Supply for 23 years as a manager. He was a member of the Kelley Baptist Church, Ash Grove. He was with the Ash Grove Fire Dept. for 20 years, and active with the Nathan Boone Rendezvous Committee for 15 years, and the Ash Grove Boosters Club. Tom Downing and Sue Rhoads were united in marriage on June 22, 1974. To this union four children were born. Together they were privileged to share over 29 years. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David Downing on November 4, 1976; and one brother, George Downing. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnaton and Ginnie Downing, and Nicholas and Shawna Downing; one daughter, Kristy and husband Richard Battles, all of Ash Grove, Mo.; two grandsons, Alexander Downing and Dallas Battles; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Annie Downing of Belfair, Kan., Robert and Gail Downing of Russell, Kan., and Walter Downing of Larned, Kan.; two sisters, Mary and husband Ernest Workman, and Connie Mason, all of Emporia, Kan.; several nieces and nephews; surrogate children, Jackson and Kim Jones, Keith Evans, Clint and Dustin Brown, Katie Maggard, Samantha Driskill, Derek Golden and many others; extended family; and a host of friends. Services will be held today, July 15, 2003 at 10 a.m. in Wilson Brim-Daniel Chapel with Rev. Darrell Slatten officiating with interment in Kelley Cemetery, Ash Grove.
Lynn J. Bunch
Lynn J. Bunch, 79, of Republic, formerly of the Lawrenceburg area, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at 6:33 p.m. in St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, Mo. Lynn was born in Bois D'Arc and was a longtime resident of the Lawrenceburg area. He was a retired prominent dairyman and stockman. He was a member of the Halltown Baptist Church. Lynn Bunch and Phyllis Kathryn Combs were united in marriage on May 29, 1948. To this union two children were born. Together they were privileged to share over 48 years. Phyllis preceded him in death on December 4, 1996. Also preceding him were his daughter, Lynette Bunch Cozad on June 25, 1989; one son, David Lynn Bunch on April 10, 1955; one sister, Nina Barkausas; and two brothers, Harrell and Arthur Bunch. He is survived by one granddaughter, Amanda "Mandy" Cozad of Springfield; his twin sister, Lela Stokes of Springfield; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Rose Grey of Willard. Services will be Friday, July 11, 2003 at 2 p.m. in Wilson Brim-Daniel Chapel, Ash Grove, with Rev. Scott Killingsworth officiating with interment following in John's Chapel Cemetery, south of Ash Grove, Mo. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today in the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
David Robert Mackish
David Robert Mackish, 75, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 8:56 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2003 at St. John's Regional Health Center after a brief illness. Robert was born April 4, 1928 to Peter and Rebecca Mackish and married Bonnie Rose Cornelius on September 17, 1955. He was an Army veteran. He was a graduate of Wyandotte High School and Central Bible College where he obtained a BA in Bible. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Romanian Bible Institute in 1997. Robert was ordained as a minister in 1962 and pastored churches in Clay Center and Wichita, Kansas. The Mackishes were appointed as missionaries to Eastern Europe in 1968 and represented the U.S. Assemblies of God in its relationships with Pentecostal groups in Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Austria. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bonnie; brother Raymond Mackish; and sisters Bernice Mackish and Mary Keele. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Petty and her husband Steve; son David and his wife Cathy; grandson David Robert Mackish II; granddaughter Candace Flinders; sisters Ruth Branch, Rosalie Elks, and Martha Massing; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends around the world who will miss him dearly. Services are 9 a.m. Friday at Central Assembly of God with burial in the Springfield National Cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today in Greenlawn Funeral Home North. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Robert Petrovich Mackish Memorial Scholarship at the Moscow Theological Institute (administrated by Lucille Parks, 1640 N. Boonville, Springfield, MO 65803).
Linvel Bradley "Buck" Burks
Linvel Bradley "Buck" Burks, 69, of Fordland, passed away at 3:12 a.m. Sunday, July 13, 2003 in St. John's Regional Health Center. Linvel was born on May 4, 1934 in Fordland to Dennis and Elma Ewing Burks. He served in the U.S. Marines in Korea and was a member of the Fordland Freewill Baptist Church. He was married to Patricia L. McGirr on March 21, 1968 and she survives of the home. Also surviving are two sons, William Burks and wife, Norma, and Bradley Burks and wife, Sharon, all of Fordland; two daughters, Robbin Browning and husband, Preston, Norma Stanley and husband, Jim, all of Springfield; brother, W.L. Burks and wife, Debbie of Fordland; half-brother, Dennis Crumm and wife, Pearl of Bolivar; sister, Norma Barbar and husband, Dennis of Cape Fair; half-sister, Edna Edwards of Michigan; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three aunts, Ellen Burks, Marie Burks, and Wilma Graves, all of Fordland. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 in the Greenhill Cemetery, Fordland. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Preston-Marsh Funeral Home, Rogersville.
