Dr. William Elijah McGee, DDS, a longtime resident of Webster Groves died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005.
Dr. McGee practiced dentistry in Webster Groves for over 47 years, where he was admired as gentle and caring, always willing to visit patients at their home or retirement center when they could not make the trip to the office.
Dr. McGee was born June 28, 1919, in Morehouse, Mo., where his father practiced dentistry. At a young age the family moved to Webster Groves, where he resided ever since. As a young man, he was active in the Boy Scouts and the Sea Lion Sea Scouts, attaining rank of Skipper. While working toward his degree in dentistry from St. Louis University Dental School (SLU) (president of his senior class), he entered the U.S. Navy with the rank of ensign.
After graduating SLU in 1943, he married Rosalie Graham, and received orders for training at Farragut, Idaho, Naval Base, then on to serve in the Pacific during World War II aboard A.P.A. 134, a Haskell Class Attack Transport. His ship, the "Bland, " traveled 186, 000 miles through the Pacific arena transporting fresh Marines and returning the wounded.
Discharged in 1946 with the rank of Lt. Sr. Grade, he and Rosalie and young son Curt returned to Webster, where he joined his father to practice dentistry in a corner office over the Rexall Drug Store at busy Gore and Lockwood. Children Barbara and Stephen soon followed.
Dedicated to community service in Webster Groves, he served as: Cub Scout Master at Clark School; Sunday school teacher and Jr. Deacon at First Congregational Church; president of the Lions Club where he was a member for over 50 years, receiving the Melvin Jones Award for service; and president of the chamber of commerce. He was raised in Webster Groves Lodge #84, where he was a member for over 50 years and a 32nd Degree Mason with the Scottish Rite.
Accomplished designer and builder of three homes, he loved working with his hands, and just a passing comment of "Wouldn't it be nice to have a sun room over there?" would start a process of plans in his head that would eventually culminate in a new room addition he hand built himself. An avid sailor who also enjoyed tennis and golf, he loved building detailed weather vanes of tall sailing ship models. He was loved by all who knew him.
