Long-time Rock Hill resident and former St. Louis University High School soccer coach, Edward "Ebbie" Dunn, died of cancer on Jan. 10, 2002. He was 73.
The popular high school coach grew up in St. Luke's parish in Richmond Heights in an athletic environment influenced by his mother and father, Maurie and Jimmy Dunn. His father was the first St. Louisan in the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Coach Dunn graduated from Christian Brothers College High School, where he played football and baseball, and St. Louis University.
He played in the St. Louis Professional Soccer League in 1951 and 1952.
In 1955, Mr. Dunn began his 38-year career as math teacher and soccer coach for the Junior Billikens. In 1973, the team won the state soccer championship for the first time in SLUH history. They took the championship once more in 1990. Coach Dunn retired as soccer coach in 1993 with a 592-197-104 record.
Coach Dunn has a long list of awards and honors. In 1979, he received his first of several national awards -- the National High School Coach of the Year Award-Soccer by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. In 1991, he was inducted into the Greater St. Louis Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 1993, he was inducted into the National Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Oneonta, New York. He was also selected as one of 60 teachers to receive the American Teacher Awards by the Walt Disney Company.
Coach's honors also include two national soccer records set in 1991 -- one for the most wins at one high school and one for the most wins of any high school soccer coach at one school.
In addition to coaching at SLUH, Mr. Dunn was St. Louis Director of the MSHSAA Girls' State Soccer Tournament for a number of years and he assisted at the annual Special Olympics in Soccer.
After his retirement, Coach Dunn volunteered as a tutor at Children's Hospital and was a substitute at SLUH.
There was no visitation. A memorial mass will be celebrated at the St. Louis University High School Gym, 4970 Oakland Ave., on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 10:30 a.m.
Mr. Dunn is survived by his wife, Eva; son, Ebby, four daughters, Maureen Dunn, Colleen Sollenberger, Rose Fredericksen, and Kerry Curran; a brother, James Dunn; two sisters, Kathleen Chamblin and Rosie McGuire and five grandchildren.

Zoe Dykstra (nee Trainer), a resident of Kirkwood for over 50 years, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002.
Mrs. Dykstra was the wife of the late Robert A. Dykstra; mother of Tom (Mary), Dan (Clarine) and Peter (Susan) Dykstra; grandmother of Erin, Bobby, Matthew, Julie, Jessie and Andy Dykstra; sister of Betty Budd and the late Ruby Wohlenhaus and Hazel Comes; sister-in-law, aunt and friend.
A memorial service was held Nov. 21 at First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood; interment private. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Adams, 63122. Arrangements by Bopp Chapel.
Affton resident Ed Edleson died on Friday, March 1, 2002, after a six-month illness.
Mr. Edleson's illness started last August and as of mid-October, he was unable to work. He had been diagnosed with emphysema over five years ago. In January, he was diagnosed with Stage IV Renal Cell Cancer.
Mr. Edleson was owner of Kwik Kopy Printing Center, 11628 Gravois in Affton. He was a member of the Affton Chamber of Commerce and was a board member on the Crestwood-Sunset Hills Area Chamber of Commerce for a number of years. His wife, Joan Edleson, is the executive director of the Affton Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife Joan Edleson (nee Lucas); children: Michael E. (Jan) Edleson, Michele E. (Tom) Lesinski, and Brenda A. Edleson; grandchildren: Christopher (Megan) Edleson, and Kevin, Ryan and Katie Lesinski. He is also survived by a brother, Jack L. Edleson.
Visitation will be held at Kutis Funeral Home, 10151 Gravois on Friday, March 8, from 3 to 9 p.m. Funeral services are on Saturday, March 9, at 9 a.m. from Kutis to a 9:30 a.m. service at Most Precious Blood Church, 3635 Union Road, with interment at Resurrection Cemetery.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to either the CBC High School Building Fund or the Cor Jesu Academy Building Fund.
Russell Emmenegger, a noted real estate developer, who donated more than 46 acres on the border of Kirkwood and Sunset Hills for Emmenegger Nature Park, died Friday, Oct. 4. He was 79.
Mr. Emmenegger, retired owner of Emmenegger Construction Inc., was eulogized at a Monday funeral service at Kutis Affton Chapel. His death was attributed to Alzheimer's disease. Burial was at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Born in Newburg, Mo., his father was the late Edward Emmenegger, a home builder whose sons continued the family tradition in construction. Mr. Emmenegger served in the Army Air Forces in World War II, and began building homes with a brother in south St. Louis County after the war.
As president of the local building company, Mr. Emmenegger oversaw such projects as the Twin City Mall in Festus-Crystal City as well as subdivisions, churches and schools. His son, Ronald, now runs the business which is known as Emmenegger Properties Inc. of Fenton.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, JoAnn Hardin Emmenegger of Chesterfield; four daughters, Diane Breckenridge, Beth Catalano and Lisa Emmenegger, all of St. Louis County; and Nancy Schlewitz of Minneapolis; and two sons, Gregory Emmenegger of Eureka, and Ronald Emmenegger of Crestwood.
Mr. Emmenegger also is survived by 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Contributions in Mr. Emmenegger's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 9374 Olive Blvd., St. Louis 63132.
Mary Margaret Epstein (nee Goehausen), died April 20 at the age of 72. The Webster Groves resident was the wife of Edward Epstein, and the mother of Michael D. (Angie) Carosello, Louis C. (Madeline) Carosello and Joanne M. (Frederick) Gumaer. She was step-mother to Katherine Escobedo, Karen Epstein and Russ Epstein. She had seven grandchildren.
Mrs. Epstein spent most of her life watching carefully over her children and was a Cub Scout leader when her sons were small. She enjoyed sewing and had been a district sales manager for the Sew N' Sew company in St. Louis for many years. She was a Southside Lioness. She enjoyed golf, playing cards and shopping. Mostly, however, she enjoyed helping others.
Bernard J. "Barney" Erbe, a Webster Groves resident, died on Tuesday, April 16. He was the husband of the late Esther Erbe, and loving father of James (Linda) Erbe and Kathleen (Bernard) Pistilli. He was a dear grandfather of Adrianne Erbe, Lindsey Gardner and Erik Erbe.

Walter J. Erxleben, a Ballwin resident who grew up in Kirkwood, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2001. Mr. Erxleben was 77.
The landscaper was a member of the Kirkwood American Legion Post #156 and the VFW Post No. 6274 in Ballwin. He was the husband of the late Lora Lee Erxleben; the father of Michael L. Erxleben; and brother to Florence Fisher, Sonny Erxleben, and the late Gertrude Beno, Margaret Walters and Russell Erxleben.
Internment was at the National Cemetery at Jefferson Barracks.
Fred Gerald Farrar, a resident of Kirkwood, died on Feb. 13, 2002. He was 79.
Mr. Farrar was born in Perryville, Mo on Dec. 4, 1922. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and worked as a aircraft engineer.
Mr. Farrar was the husband of Ellen Farrar; father of Nanci Ann (Larry) Womack, Jane (Dennis) Wissman, Melinda Farrar, Julie (Brad Currey) Farrar.
He was the grandfather of seven and the great-grandfather of 1.
Kathleen Burke Finnigan, who touched the hearts and minds of legions of St. Louisans during a distinguished life as a teacher, volunteer, and therapist, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at St. Joseph Hospital in Kirkwood following a four-year battle with cancer. She was 57.
Ms. Finnigan taught mathematics and science at St. Peter Catholic School in Kirkwood from the late 1960s until 1984. She then gained state certification as a substance abuse counselor and served as a therapist for St. Louis area public and parochial schools. She also worked with West County Psychological Services, Inc.
She performed a variety of volunteer duties with the annual fund-raising auctions at St. Louis University High School and Christian Brothers College (CBC) High School during the 1980s and 1990s.
Ms. Finnigan is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law: Matthew Burke Finnigan and his wife, Suzanne Ryan Finnigan, of Los Angeles, Cal.; Brendan Burke Finnigan and his wife, Maureen Brady Finnigan of Manchester, Mo.; and Pvt. Patrick Burke Finnigan of the United States Marine Corps, who is stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, Cal.
Other survivors include a brother, Kevin Burke of Boston; and a sister, Maureen Burke-Kuhn of Berkeley, Cal.
Visitation was Tuesday at Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood. The funeral was at St. Gerard Majella Catholic Church in Kirkwood. The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
Don F. Follett, a longtime resident of Kirkwood, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002.
Mr. Follett was a teacher with the Special School District for 23 years. He was the husband of Joyce Follett (nee Ward); father of Tony, Doug (Erin), Scott (Sabrina), Dave and Robert (Cindy) Follett; grandfather of Matt, Julia, Elizabeth, Elana, Amanda, Richard, Greg, Megan, Adriene, Sam and James; brother of Bill (Betty) Follett and Janet (Joe) Herman; uncle, great-uncle and friend.
Funeral services were held Nov. 19 at Bopp Chapel in Kirkwood. Interment, National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke's Hospital.
