Florence E. Fraser (nee Fansher) died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002.
Mrs. Fraser was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood. She was the wife of the late Douglas H. Fraser; mother of John Douglas (Lindy) Fraser, Ph.D., Donald Steven (Nancy) Fraser and Nancy (Quentin) Wilson, Ph.D.; grandmother of Andrew, David, Matthew, Stuart, Ben and Adam; sister-in-law, aunt and friend.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 14, 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood, 100 E. Adams. Interment, private.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music Program or the St. Louis Science Center. Arrangements by Bopp Chapel.
Paul J. Frein, an educator in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, of pancreatic cancer. He was 66.
Mr. Frein, a lifelong resident of Webster Groves, taught from 1958 to 1983 at Bishop DuBourg High School. He was principal at St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy High School from 1983 to 2000. He was administrator at Duchesne High School until the time of his death.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, April 6, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Webster Groves. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.
Mr. Frein is survived by two brothers, Bob Frein and George Frein; and a sister, Denise Cole. Memorial contributions can be made to an archdiocesan high school scholarship fund titled the Paul Frein Memorial Fund in care of the Catholic Education Office, 20 Archbishop May Drive, St. Louis, Mo. 63119.
Doris Fridley (nee Spruss), a Kirkwood resident and retired librarian at Valley Park Junior High and High School, died in her home on Sunday, July 21, 2002, of a brain tumor. She was 73.
Mrs. Fridley was a school librarian for 15 years, retiring in 1988. She was a classical choir singer, and sang in the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, the St. Louis Bach Society, Bel Canto Choir and the choir at Kirkwood United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Fridley earned a bachelor's degree in zoology from Washington University in 1950. After graduation, she worked in research with Rita Levy-Montalcini, who shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in medicine for discoveries of growth factors. In recent years, she belonged to a Memoir Group, which met weekly and shared stories.
Mrs. Fridley married her husband, Marvin, in December, 1952. She was a longtime member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and was an active member of St. Louis Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
Mrs. Fridley is survived by her husband; sons Mark (Kathy), Matthew (Stacy) and Andy (Lorie MacFarlane) Fridley; daughter Grace (George) Malley; sister Helen (Martin) Mika; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation was at Forever Oak Hill Funeral Home at Pfitzinger in Kirkwood; memorial service July 25 at Kirkwood United Methodist Church; interment, Bethel Cemetery in Pond. Memorial contributions may be made to any cancer research organization. Services for the Fridley family were coordinated through Shepard Funeral Chapel.
Thomas Arthur Gibbs, a 44-year resident of Kirkwood, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002. He was 96.
Mr. Gibbs was the recipient of the 1981 Kirkwood Citizen of the Year award. He was a member of the Kirkwood Area Chamber of Commerce and was the founder of the Kirkwood Men's Garden Club. He enjoyed a long career as district manager with Western Electric Company, retiring in 1970 after 47 years.
He serveed on the Kirkwood Park Board and was a member of the Circle of St. Joseph.
Mr. Gibbs was the beloved husband of Mildred F. Gibbs (nee Beardsley); father of Robert B. (Gail) Gibbs and Melinda Gibbs; grandfather of Stephen Gibbs and Sheryl Rosenfeld; great-grandfather of Mitchell and Meagan Rosenfeld; daughter-in-law to Jane Gibbs; brother-in-law and uncle.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 514 E. Argonne Drive in Kirkwood. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, or a charity of one's choice.
James E. "Jim" Gilder, 66, died Saturday, June 22, 2002.
A resident of St. Charles, Mr. Gilder operated the Big Bend Mobil Station in Webster Groves for 44 years.
Mr. Gilder was the husband of Marge Gilder; father of Mike (Robin) Gilder and Cathy (Richard) Kampmann. He also is survived by sisters, Carol Phillips, Connie King (Gene), and Joy Elaine Gilder CSJ; and five grandchildren.
A service was held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, St. Charles. Arrangements through Baue Funeral and Memorial Center. Interment at St. Charles Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be sent to Baue Funeral Home for SSM Hospice or Masses.
Peter B Goelz, a resident of Glendale, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002.
Mr. Goelz was employed by United Van Lines for 32 years. He served as the company's executive vice president and general manager before his retirement. A graduate of St. Louis University, Mr. Goelz was a member of the Battle of the Bulge Gateway Chapter.
He was the husband of "Gigi" Glenda Goelz (nee Kingen); and father of Roderick Goelz, Annette (G. Stephen) Erker, Cynthia (Thomas) Fournie and Yvonne (Cris) Conner. He was the grandfather of Michael and Kevin Fournie, Lauren and Joseph Erker and Matthew and Meredith Conner.
Mr. Goelz was the brother of Elisabeth Goelz of Belleville, Ill.; a twin brother to Brother Paul C. Goelz, S.M. of San Antonio, Tex.; and the late Louis Goelz, Fr. John Goelz, Joseph, Martha, Blase and Francis Goelz, Cecilia Macdonald and Joanne Hassett.
A private interment for Mr. Goelz was held Jan. 17 at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Hilda R. Goeggel, a resident of Kirkwood, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at the age of 91. Mrs. Goeggel is survived by a daughter, Marsha Grumbo (Eldon), and a son, Robert Goeggel (Kathleen); and grandchildren Robert Goeggel, Jr. (Candice), Mary Elizabeth Goeggel, Megan, Mara and Lindsey Grumbo.
Funeral services were May 9 at Concordia Lutheran Church.
Helen F. Goodenough, died Saturday, July 13, 2002. She was 81.
Mrs. Goodenough was the loving wife of the late P. Richard Goodenough; mother of Judith (John) Banks and Pam Gaudet; grandmother of Jennifer, Jo and Johnny Banks, Brian and Gregory Gaudet; sister of the late Dean Faulkner; sister-in-law of Hartland Helmich; dear aunt, cousin and friend to many.
A memorial service was held July 16, at Webster Groves Presbyterian Church. Burial private; arrangements through Gerber Chapel in Webster Groves. If desired, contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels of Bethesda Dilworth Memorial Home or the charity of the donor's choice.
Lorraine Winston Gordon of Webster Groves died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002.
Mrs. Gordon was the daughter of Mary Scott Winston and William Winston. She was the fourth of six children: Sylvester, James, Elizabeth, Willa Mae and Theodore. Willa Mae and Theodore preceded her in death.
Mrs. Gordon attended Douglass Elementary and High School in Webster Groves. She was a member of the Douglass High School Choir, before graduating in 1944. She studied cosmetology at Hadley Technical School, and became a licensed beautician in 1946.
In 1946, Mrs. Gordon married her high school sweetheart, Benny William Gordon, Jr. Mr. Gordon, who was serving in the Army, came home on a 24-hour furlough to marry "Sweet Lorraine" at the First Baptist Church of Webster Groves.
The Gordon's had four children: Benny III, Gianis (Janice), Marvin and Johnathan Keith. Mrs. Gordon also raised her half-sisters, Mary Alice, Earnestine and Elnoria Winston.
She was involved in the Church Chancel Choir, Sunday School, Mothers' Board, Baptist Training Union, Women's Missionary Union, the Order of the Eastern Star, Douglass School Alumni Association and the St. Louis Beautician's Association.
Services were held Sunday, Oct. 6 at First Baptist Church.
Vivian V. Gorecki, (nee Stritar), died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at the age of 80.
Mrs. Gorecki was the beloved wife of Leonard Gorecki; mother of Trudy Skonicki (nee Gorecki), Robert Gorecki, James Gorecki and Jack Gorecki; sister of Gertrude Zaura and Tony Stritar; grandmother of Kathy, David, Rob, Laura, Ken, Karen, Becqui, Jordan and Alex; and great grandmother to Nathan, Sam, Brianna, Dylan and Amber.
Funeral services were held at Holy Redeemer Church in Webster Groves. Interment was private at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Arrangements made through Gerber Chapel in Webster Groves.
