During his tenure with the police department Officer Von Hatten had been assigned to patrol duties, the detective bureau, the traffic division, and was detached to the Municipal Drug Enforcement Group.
Fellow officers agree that Officer Von Hatten's traffic days, wheeling around Kirkwood and Oakland on the Harley Davidson police motorcycles, were his favorite. Officer Von Hatten was a mentor to young officers, offering advice and instruction, mixed with a great sense of humor and dedicated work ethic.
Training the new female cadet to ride the Harleys in 1976, writing sick case reports that only the ER doctors could understand, and supporting every opportunity to build teamwork and camaraderie among the department members, are examples of Officer Von Hatten's attitude and drive.
Fellow officers say he was quick with a smile and a positive word, an officer who others gravitated toward for support.
Police officers from around the area attended the April 29 funeral. Twenty police motorcycles and 30 marked cars were involved in the funeral procession to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Mr. Von Hatten was a member of the Kirkwood Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite. He served in the United States Navy for four years, from 1964 to 1969.
