Dorothy Madeline Kane
Kane, Dorothy Madeline Browne Passed away November 5, 2007.
Dorothy was born in New York City to Orville and Mae Browne, married for 61 years to the late Capt. John C. Kane Jr. (USN), and as a “Navy wife” she moved her household and growing family almost twenty times in as many years, as far away as Trinidad and Panama, before settling in the St.Louis area.
Dorothy was predeceased by her youngest son David Kane, and her granddaughter Shelby Liane Kane.
Survivors include sons Mark Kane (Marie Louise), James Kane (Anne), and daughters Michaela Rodeno (Gregory) and Elizabeth Kelsey (Richard), as well as seven grandchildren: Cornelia Kane, Lindsay Kane, Holly Kane, Katharine Rodeno, John Rodeno, Lauren Kane and Max Kelsey; and one great-grandchild, Lily Elizabeth Rice.
After seeing several of her oldest children through college Dorothy attended Washington University where she earned a Liberal Arts degree in 1984.
She was an amazing and talented person, a supportive and encouraging mother and grandmother, a faithful and prolific correspondent with her many friends from all over the world, a volunteer, a gardener, a wonderful entertainer and decorator, an avid reader (she learned to read at age four) and a writer of talent.
She was vibrant, smart, charming, and beautiful both inside and out.
Her family and friends will treasure many wonderful memories of her and her children will try as always to live up to her example (and her sayings, such as “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”.
Many thanks to the good people at Garden View and VNA Hospice who cared for Mom.
