Frank Marcus "Mark" Lemp
September 8, 1928 - May 9, 2014
Frank Marcus “Mark” Lemp, born September 8, 1928, died peacefully on May 9, 2014, surrounded by his family. We miss him.
An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Mark avidly fished and hunted for anything in season, especially ducks, geese, deer, turkey and the random Kodiak bear. Some of his closest friendships began duck hunting and fishing. A passionate gardener, who couldn’t pass a fruit or vegetable stand without stopping, he had gardens all over Missouri, from Webster Groves to Eolia, Defiance and beyond, which he tended carefully with his good friends and family. His wife J (Judy) cooked to perfection whatever he brought home.
A life-long bridge player, Red Sox fan, collector of barbecue pits and freezers, he traveled as much as possible, followed the financial markets closely, loved his dog Blue and was a staunch conservative. His favorite places were Pigeon Lake in Wisconsin and Kentucky Lake.
Professionally, he spent his career in the women’s shoe business. From 1954 to 1984 he worked at Brown Shoe Company, serving as General Manager of Naturalizer Shoes, General Manager of the Women’s Division, Vice President of Brown Shoe Company and Executive Vice President of the Men’s, Women’s and Children’s Wholesale Division. He joined Interco and its Florsheim Shoe Division in 1985 and left in 1991 to become the owner of FML Footwear Inc. In 1994 the company merged and became the Mosinger Co., LLC, dba Mark Lemp Footwear, specializing in women’s shoes. He never really retired and continued to come into his office every day by 6am.
Along the way, Mark joined the Veiled Prophet Organization, started up two resorts in Branson Missouri, began raising cattle and co-owned a boat company, a Custom Cuts franchise and other business ventures. He joined the board of the YMCA, chaired the fundraising for the Mid- County YMCA expansion and Natatorium and continued to help head its fundraising drives. He joined the board of the Missouri Epilepsy Foundation in the ‘80’s. He served as President and was elected to a Life Membership of the Two-Ten organization, a charity to help those in the footwear industry.
Education was a driving force in his life. A graduate of Roxbury Latin and Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College, he has been a major fundraiser for both schools and chaired their capital campaigns. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, but deferred it to join the Army, where he served from 1950 until his Honorable Discharge as Second Lieutenant, Medical Service Corps.
The best decision in Mark’s life was to marry J, his lifelong love and partner and supporter. His intellectual equal, J’s social skills and genuine interest in the lives of all their friends and business partners made them a powerful couple who turned those they met, of whatever age, occupation, education or race into friends and part of the family. They treated everyone with respect and dignity, She was indispensable in his life and he knew it.
Mark leaves behind J, his wife of 63 years, his children Ann (Robert Keefe), Rick (Polly), Mark (Elizabeth) and Bill (Shannon), his grandchildren Kate, Danny and Kevin Keefe; Mary, Alex and Jimmy Lemp; Sarah (Rebecca Lambert) and Matthew Lemp; Will, Emilee and Caroline Lemp; his brother Karl Lemp, and his niece Cathy, his nephews Matthew and Robin, and too many friends to count. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delta Water Fowl 1312 Basin Avenue, Bismark, N.D. 58504 or the Two Ten Footwear Foundation, 1466 Main Street, Waltham, MA 02451.
Visitation, Thursday, May 15th, 3-8 PM at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood. Private interment at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
