Barbara Cecilia Woods
1939 - 2016
Woods, Barbara Cecilia (nee Wolf), born in St. Louis and latterly of Glendale, Missouri, died peacefully and surrounded by family at her home on Sunday, July 3, 2016.
Full of warmth and always ready to make a new friend, Barb could trace her vibrant personality and happy disposition back to her roots-her loving parents, Phil and Cel Wolf, and her adored and adoring grandparents. As a child, she lived with her family across the hall from her paternal grandparents, over her grandpa’s shoe store on Shreve and Lee in North St. Louis. After moving to Riverview Drive, Barb transferred from St. Englebert’s to Our Lady of Mount Carmel grade school, and graduated from Laboure High School, Class of 1957, where she focused on studies, friends, boys, and after-school jobs (but probably not in that order). She lied about her age to get her first job at a drugstore at 14, and after high school graduation she earned enough money at Union Electric to send herself to Europe and Hawaii, long before most middle-class St. Louis girls ever dreamed of overseas adventures. She met Glenn Woods on a blind date (again lying to make herself older, this time just for the fun of it) and they married and had two daughters. In the 1970s, Glenn had the audacity to transplant the family 300 miles away to Chicago, approximately 290 miles farther than moves made by anyone else in the tight-knit Wolf family clan. Barb thrived in their suburb of Arlington Heights until it was time to make another big transition, this time back to North St. Louis County to open Woodsy’s Ice Cream Parlor and Deli. Barb worked alongside her husband for over a decade before she lovingly but firmly told him “enough!”, and after a brief interlude driving a pantyhose delivery truck for Legg’s, she found her true calling of helping disabled adults at START, a social work agency in Berkeley. Barb “built partnerships with area businesses to foster employment opportunities for the clients she served.” That line comes straight from her old resume but doesn’t begin to express the enthusiasm she brought to her task: brainstorming ideas on how employers could best utilize people’s abilities rather than focus on their disabilities. She won over some key decision-makers in the corporate offices of businesses like Wehrenberg and Dierbergs, and together they paved the way for the many people we see today working from their wheelchairs in movie theaters, grocery stores, and elsewhere. Causes weren’t Barb’s passion, however; people were. She formed such tight bonds and was so well-loved that decades later she was still receiving phone calls from her disabled clients. After START closed, she moved to JESS, later renamed A.O. Lakes, before retiring in her 60s to devote her time to her growing brood of grandchildren. Barb’s new job will be patiently overseeing and gently guiding those she left behind: Glennon, her husband of 52 years; daughter Stephanie and son-in-law Robert Zuehlke; daughter Amy Butler; her adoring fan-club of grandchildren, Samantha, Alexandra and Christoph Zuehlke, and Cecilia, John, and Zoe Butler; her siblings, Sandra (Herbert) Karr, Cecilia Kaup, and Philip (Jeannie) Wolf, best friend Pam Weber, and a long list of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
We will celebrate Barb's life on Saturday, July 9, starting with a visitation at 9:15 am and followed by funeral Mass at 10, both at Mary Queen of Peace Church in Webster Groves. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to help support the caring and compassionate work done by Alternative Hospice.
