SLUH is saddened to learn about the passing of Mr. Joe Schulte today on July 11, 2016. Following is a letter from SLUH President David Laughlin regarding Mr. Schulte.
"Dear SLUH Community,
I am saddened to inform you of the passing of Mr. Joe Schulte ’54 today on July 11, 2016. He had been in ill health for some time and was comforted by his loved ones, family and friends during his last days.
Mr. Schulte’s generous spirit and devotion to his students and his crafts of mathematics, theater and faith are known to generations of Junior Billikens as well as many people throughout the greater St. Louis community. He has had a presence at SLUH as a student, teacher, counselor and friend for the past 66 years. During this time, he has enhanced our theatrical arts program to unparalleled levels while also contributing his talents to the Muny. He has received recognition as the St. Louis Arts Educator of the Year by the Arts & Education Council, and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Rep Theater. In 2010, I was proud to award Joe Schulte our highest alumni honor at St. Louis University High School, The Backer Award, and in 2005 we named our theater the Joseph Schulte Theater in his honor.
In addition to his unmistakable laugh and knack for teaching juggling, Mr. Schulte will long be known for his passion for life and educating young men in the Jesuit tradition. He has regularly kept in touch with alumni all across the country and made regular visits to Broadway, where he watched his former students excel in the Arts. He said many times: “If you want to be happy, choose a career in which you make others happy-don’t worry about the pay.” He encouraged students “to work and succeed, not to give up, ” to “turn people on to life and give passion to students, ” and, above all, to “learn something and have a good time.” Thank you, Mr. Schulte, for helping us all learn something and having a good time! May your distinctive laughter now fill Heaven.
Please join me in a prayer of thanksgiving for the life of Mr. Joe Schulte. Please keep his family, including Joe ’86 and Dan ’93, his grandkids and his friends in your prayers.
Service information will be made known, including here on our SLUH website, when it is available.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam
God bless,
David Laughlin"
