Passed away surrounded by his family at the age of 68 on Tuesday, April 26, 2016.
Beloved husband of 47 years to Barbara Beard (nee Boyd); loving father of Kristen (Steve) MacDonald and Penelope (Michael) Calawa; dear brother of Bruce (Nonie) Beard; loving grandfather of Boyd MacDonald; Hannah, Nicole and Ellis Calawa; dear son-in-law of Jane Macklin; caring Uncle and dear son of the late Robert and Lucille Beard.
After graduating from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, and a M.S in Engineering Management from University of Missouri-Rolla, he followed his love for flying with a USAF/ANG career of 35 years.
During his military career, he held several leadership positions with the Illinois Air National Guard including Wing Commander of the 183rd Fighter Wing flying F-16s and the 182nd Airlift Wing flying C-130s. He started his career piloting F-4s in the Air Force, flying 192 missions in Vietnam and earning two distinguish flying crosses.
His passions were his family, his dogs, traveling, beer making, wood working, riding his bike, growing jalapenos and being a Docent at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum.
Services: Visitation, Sunday, May 1st from 2-5 p.m. at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood, MO. Funeral service with full military honors and flyby at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Monday, May 2nd at 1:30 p.m. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Beloved husband of the late Florence Jane "Flo" Heitert (nee Callahan) for 68 years; dear father of James (Carol) Heitert, Joanne Walley, Eileen (Rick) Weber, Jacque (Jack) Riley, Dick (Vickie) Heitert, Mary (Ray) Mangrich, Tom (Denise) Heitert, and the late Janet Claire Heitert; dear grandfather of 21; dear great-grandfather of 36; dear great-great-grandfather of 7; dear brother of the late Dorothy Poehling, Jean Heitert, and Robert Heitert; dear uncle, cousin, and friend to many.
Deacon Heitert was born in St. Louis. He graduated from Gardenville Grade School and Cleveland High School, then received degrees from Washington University (electrical engineering) and University of Missouri-St. Louis (education). He spent 43 years as an electrical and physical design engineer at Emerson Electric, retiring in August 1985. He has belonged to Ste. Genevieve du Bois Parish in Warson Woods since December 1958.
In addition to parish duties, he focused primarily on the poor through his work at several food pantries--St. Liborius, St. Nicholas, the St. Louis Food Bank and Catholic Charities Home Supply Center. He also provided math and reading instruction to adults at St. Patrick's Center, assisted with youth religious instruction at Annunziata Grade School and represented the mentally handicapped before the Social Security Administration. He retired as an active deacon in February 2003.
Funeral Saturday, April 23rd, 9:30 am from Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood, to Ste. Genevieve du Bois Catholic Church for 10:00 am Mass. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to St. Patrick Center, or St. Vincent de Paul Society. Visitation Friday 4-8:00 pm.
