Loronda Gail Colston
Loronda Gail Colston, 51, of Hickory Flat, died April 27, 2005 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in New Albany. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hickory Flat.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 29 at Faith Baptist Church. Burial was in Flat Rock Cemetery. Bro. Larry D. West officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Robert E. Colston; a son, Robert Perry Colston of Hickory Flat; and her father, Oliver F. Staggs of Hickory Flat.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Doyle Staggs.
Pallbearers were Ricky Mullins, Nicky King, Corey Cook, Joey Watt, Keith Lowry, Sam Nutt. Honorary pallbearer was Glenn Cossitt.
Willa Aletha Floyd
Willa Aletha Floyd, 93, of Potts Camp, died April 25 in Ripley. She was the widow of Dallas Floyd. She was a retired postmaster and a member of Potts Camp Methodist Church.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on April 30 at United Funeral Service Chapel in New Albany. Burial was in Potts Camp Cemetery. Rev. Paul Knight officiated.
She leaves her son, John Floyd of Bethesda, Md.; and three grandchildren.
John Allen Huey
John Allen Huey, 62, of Pontotoc, died April 25, 2005 at Pontotoc Hospital. He was a member of Fairview Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was a restaurant owner and manager.
Services were held at Tutor Memorial Chapel. Burial was April 27 in Cruse Cemetery in Pontotoc.
He leaves his wife, Clara (CJ) Huey of Pontotoc; four sons, Roger Huey, Barry Huey, Tracy Huey, all of Myrtle, Shawn Huey of Oxford; a stepson, Ronnie Tutor; two stepdaughters, DeeDee Gann, Trena Chunn; five brothers, David Huey of Tupelo, Keith Huey of Pontotoc, Hershell Huey of Olive Branch, Sam Huey of Red Banks, Milton Ray Huey of Waterford; two sisters, Brenda Berryhill of Ecru, Sheila Cothern of Mt. Pleasant; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Brittany Huey, and a great-grandson, Landon Cy Huey.
Pallbearers were Raymond Owens, Marlin Chunn, Rusty Berryhill, Terry Allen Smith, Randy Cruse and Jimmy Cruse.
Rev. Chester Pegues
Rev. Chester Pegues, 60, of Holly Springs, died April 28, 2005 at Alliance HealthCare System. He was a member of the Holly Springs Oxford CME District and Beverly Chapel CME Church, a Vietnam veteran, a member of the NAACP, American Legion Post 250, Masonic Lodge, and Ministerial Alliance. He served as pastor at Berry’s Chapel CME Church in Michigan City, Isaac Chapel CME Church and Nichols Chapel CME Church in Byhalia, Hebron Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs, New Hope CME Church in Red Banks, Jordan Chapel CME Church in Oxford, and Walton Chapel CME Church in Sardis. He was a retired owner of Pegues & Son Barber Shop in Holly Springs, and retired CME Church minister.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on May 1 at Anderson Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs. Burial was in Beverly Chapel CME Church Cemetery. Bishop Thomas L. Hoyt Jr. officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Wanda Burton Pegues; two daughters, Kim Booker of Memphis, Tenn., Jolinea Pegues of Holly Springs; two sons, Johnatha LaShaun Pegues, Jansen Laron Pegues, both of Holly Springs; four sisters, Veronia Donals of Memphis, Tenn., Sweetie Dawkins of Holly Springs, Maxine Gwenn of Washington, DC, Patricia Pegues of Holly Springs; four brothers, James Pegues of Memphis, Tenn., Lang Pegues, Leon Pegues, both of Kansas City, Mo., Benel Pegues of Holly Springs; and one grandson.
Pallbearers were Jerry Booker, Torrey Pegues, Benji Pegues, John Bass, Patrick Campbell, Tony Glover, Dennis Harris, Miaron Jackson, James Luellen, Tyrone Richards. Honorary pallbearers were ministers of the Northeast Mississippi Region, Ministerial Alliance, American Legion Post #250.
Bennie Wade Pruitt II
Bennie Wade Pruitt II, 21, of Red Banks, died April 29, 2005 at his home. He was a stocker with Lowe’s.
Services were held at 11:30 a.m. on May 3 at Victoria Baptist Church, where he was a member. Bro. Bob Johnson officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his parents, Deborah and Johnny Hall of Red Banks; two brothers, Michael Frizzel of Covington, Tenn., Johnny J. Hall of Rosebud, Ark.; a sister, Sabrina C. Hall of Red Banks; and grandparents, Brooksie Glover of Covington, Tenn., Kay and Sonnie Youngblood of Red Banks.
Christopher Raymond Rixie
Christopher Raymond Rixie, 19, of Olive Branch, died April 26, 2005 at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. He was a student at Tennessee Technology Center.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 29 at Longview Heights Baptist Church in Olive Branch. Burial was in Memphis Memory Gardens. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his parents, Marcie and Chuck Moss of Byhalia, and Jimmy and Elizabeth Rixie of Olive Branch; two stepsisters, Joanna Cohn of Crystal Springs, Jill Blakney of Hattiesburg; two stepbrothers, Lewis Stringfellow, Robert Stringfellow, both of Olive Branch; his fiancée, Jessica Walker of Byhalia; and his grandparents, Larry and Estelle Russom of Memphis.
Memorial contributions may be made to Longview Baptist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Paula Jones Salter
Paula Jones Salter, 45, of Forest, died May 1, 2005, at St. Dominic Hospital following complications from multiple sclerosis. A professional economic developer and marketing analyst, Mrs. Salter held the post of deputy director of economic development at the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians at the time of her retirement in 1991. She was a member of Forest United Methodist Church, the University of Mississippi Alumni Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, Magna Charta Dames and Colonial Dames. She was a founding member of the “Ladies of the Night” book club and active in many civic organizations.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. May 3 at Forest United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mike Sahler and the Rev. Milton Whatley officiated. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. and interment will be made in Oddfellows Cemetery in Macon.
Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Sidney L. (Sid) Salter of Forest; one daughter, Katherine B. (Kate) Salter of Oxford; her mother, Mrs. Merle Dent Jones of Macon; and a brother, Augustus R. (Gus) Jones of Aberdeen.
She was preceded in death by her father, Capt. Whitney B. Jones Jr., who was a distinguished U.S. Navy civil engineer and at the apex of his career commanded the world’s two largest Seabee bases.
Pallbearers were Marty Wiseman, David Hampton, Danny Phillips, Bill Jacobs, Andy Chambers, Tre’ Chambers, Freddie Bagley and Charlie Mitchell.
William Carnail Shelton
William Carnail (Nail) Shelton, 49, of Aurora, Ill., formerly of Holly Springs, died April 15, 2005 at his home. He was a member of the National Honors Society, a member of the United States Marine Corps, where he was a 3rd Battalion Series Honor Guard and a recipient of the Rifle Sharpshooters Badge. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for over 20 years.
Services were held at 10 a.m. on April 25 at Logan Street Missionary Baptist Church in Batavia, Ill., where he was a member. Rev. S. Todd Yeary officiated. Moss Family Funeral Home of Batavia, Ill., was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Daisy Williams-Shelton; two daughters, Angela Shelton, Denise Shelton; a son, Richard Shelton, all of Aurora, Ill.; his parents, Tillman and Ruthie Shelton of Holly Springs; three brothers, Tillman Shelton Jr., of Aurora, Isaac Shelton of Fountain, Colo., Ollie Shelton of Holly Springs; six sisters, Lolar Beard of Holly Springs, Eva Jackson of Ashland; Lurlean Shelton, Willie Ann Shelton, both of Houston, Tx., Marjorie Sise, Shelia Shelton, both of Holly Springs; and three grandchildren.
