Mattie Lee Jones Martin
Mattie Lee Jones Martin, 91, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Holly Springs, died Nov. 13, 2013, at her home. She was the widow of Eddie Martin. She was a member of Greater Abyssinian MB Church in Memphis, a member of the Mother’s Board, and a retired employee of Admiral Benbow Inn., Morrison Inc.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 23 at Yarbrough Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. S.A. Phillips will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
She leaves two daughters, Bertha Harris (Calvin), Rubie Kegler (William), both of Memphis; a son, Harry Martin (Estelle) of Memphis; a sister, Arlillie Finley of Holly Springs, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Memory Kelis Walls
Memory Kelis Walls, infant, died Nov. 11, 2013, at Baptist Women’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 17 at Hernando Road Church of Christ in Holly Springs. Burial was in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her mother and father, Sherita Marie Corbert Walls and Willie B. Walls of Lamar; four sisters and a brother, Whitley, Kimberly, Alexandria, Chris and Narelle; and grandparents, Jearline Walls, Donald Corbert and Jacqueline Finley.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Woodson Walls.
John Ward
John Ward, 58, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 12, 2013, at his home. He was a Baptist and an Air Force veteran. He worked for Nucor Steel of Memphis and was a former residential contractor.
Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Southaven was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife of 28 years, Janet Ward; three sons, Michael Jacon Cicalla of Northport, Ala., Jacob Bryant Ward of Cumming, Ga., and John Franklin Ward II of Memphis; his mother, Patricia Ward of Nesbit; a brother, Ronnie Ward of Lenoir City, Tenn.; a sister, Trish Stoy of Arkansas City, Kan.; and three grandchildren.
Robert James Mobley
Robert James Mobley was born May 3, 1923, in Marshall County, Mississippi, to Milton Marvin Mobley and Annie Laurie McAlexander. He died November 13, 2013. He went to school in Red Banks, Mississippi, and joined the Air Force after finishing Aeronautical School in Whitehaven, Tennessee. He was an industrial thread sales representative for Coats-American thread for 30 years before retiring in 1986. He was in the land development business from 1986 until his death.
He married Betty Ann Kennedy in 1948, and they had three children; John Robert Mobley of Kansas City, Missouri; Elizabeth Mobley of Fort Collins, Colorado; and James Milton Mobley of Pueblo, Colorado. He had two grandchildren, Isabella Ann Mobley and James Edward Mobley.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church conducted by Rev. Leonard Elder at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16. Visitation was prior to the service in the commons area of the church starting at 12 noon.
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the 15th Army Air Corp 1-1/2 years in Foggia, Italy, and six months in Dakar, West Africa. He obtained the rank of staff sergeant and received an honorable discharge December 8, 1945.
He leaves one sister, Betty Mobley Lyle of Hot Springs, Ark., and several nieces and nephews.

Melvin Scarborough
Melvin Scarborough, age 90, of Red Banks, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013. Born on June 1, 1923 to Charles Henry and Sally Bertha Scarborough in Marmaduke, Ark., he grew up with his brother, Edward, and sister, the late Euelene Wall. With the approval of his father, he eagerly joined the U.S. Navy at the early age of 17 and served in World War II in the Pacific. Upon return after the war, he married Lorene Piker on May 3, 1948. They initially lived in Memphis, Tenn., followed by Olive Branch and lastly, Red Banks. Together, they had four children, Dwight, Larry, Joan and Karen.
Melvin loved to build things. He worked after the war in construction and was a prolific concrete worker and supervisor. He built numerous buildings during this time with Allen and O’Hara in Memphis, Tenn., to include work on Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium and the Turner Complex at the University of Mississippi. He also built several houses throughout the years, doing the majority of work himself. In his later years, he enjoyed tree farming and growing hay.
He was a life-long member of the Freemasons and was also a Shriner. He loved to travel with his horse and perform in parades. Melvin also loved a good story and didn’t mind bending your ear to tell one.
Mr. Scarborough is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lorene; sons Dwight Scarborough and his wife Anita of Horn Lake, Dr. Larry and his wife Jackie Scarborough of Sewanee, Tenn.; daughters Joan and her husband Dr. William McClatchy of Southaven, Karen and her husband Lt. Col. Michael Murphy, USAF retired of Columbus, along with eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and his brother Edward Scarborough of Southaven.
Memorial service was held at Holly Springs Funeral Home on November 19, 2013 at 10 a.m., followed by burial service in Bradford, Arkansas.
Unless a man undertakes more than he possibly can do, he will never do all that he can.

John Earl Brown
John Earl Brown, 51, of Potts Camp, died Nov. 8, 2013, at Baptist New Albany Hospital. He was a Baptist, a diesel mechanic and a cobbler.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel.
He leaves his wife, Kimberlie Brown of Potts Camp; three sons, Michael-Jon Brown, Tyler Brown, both of Potts Camp, Brandon Hendricks of Red Banks; his daughter, Melissa Brown of Spokane, Wash.; his mother, Betty Durham of Spokane.; two brothers, Eddie Knowles of Southaven, Robin Knowles of Memphis, Tenn.; seven sisters, Chynena Ayers, Teresa Garcia, Karen Ioane, all of Spokane, Cherity Caldwell of Southaven, Deirdra O’Neill of Bakersfield, Calif., Teresa Nance of Memphis, Angela Chittom of Collierville, Tenn.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Brown of Round Up, Mt.
John T. Henke
John T. Henke, 90, of Lamar, died Nov. 7, 2013, at his home. He moved to Lamar 40 years ago. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Following his military service, he attended trade school and was employed as a construction superintendent for the E.L. Bruce Company for 32 years before his retirement. He was a Baptist and was active in the Holly Springs Veterans of Foreign Wars affairs.
Graveside services with military honors were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 14. at West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Germantown, Tenn. Bro. Don Wilson officiated. Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center - Main Chapel of Somerville was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his stepdaughter, Rita Hall (Phil) of Somerville; his step-granddaughter, Cindy Hyde of Memphis; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Barbara Hanvey; a stepson, Jerry Hanvey; two sisters, Georgia and Artense; and his brother, Leo Henke.

Marvin Dean Wilbanks
Marvin Dean Wilbanks, 55, of Byhalia, died Nov. 8, 2013, at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. He was born Aug. 8, 1958, to Junior and Edna Shelby Wilbanks.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Medlock Methodist Church. Ripley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
