Mattie Mae James Hope
Mattie Mae James Hope, 87, of Holly Springs, died June 2, 2006 at her home. She was the widow of O.T. Hope.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 8 at Free Branch MB Church in Holly Springs, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Shelby Washington officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her caregivers, two goddaughters, Mona Griffin, Deborah Porter, both of Holly Springs; caregiver godson, Walter Griffin of Holly Springs; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Carrie James and Mollie James; and two brothers, Willie James and Sylvester James.
Pallbearers were Travis Griffin, Mark Porter, Lexter Mull, Walter Griffin, Calvin Boga Jr. and Jairus LeaSure.
Sherry Ann Jones
Sherry Ann Jones, 47, of Holly Springs, died June 4, 2006 at Briarcrest Home Care in Ashland.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on June 10 at Royal Chapel CME Church in Slayden. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a son, Thomas M. Harvey; her father, Joseph Jones Sr.; a brother, Joseph Jones Jr., all of Holly Springs.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ollie Mae Taylor.
Emmett Kimbrough
Emmett Kimbrough, 71, of Holly Springs, died June 2, 2006 at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab Great Oaks LLC in Byhalia. He was a member of Kimbrough Chapel MB Church in Holly Springs. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a retired mechanic with the City of Holly Springs Sanitation Department.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on June 7 at Hopewell No. 2 MB Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. John Lee Isom officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Janie Glover Kimbrough; two daughters, May Kimbrough, Theresa Reaves, both of Holly Springs; two sons, Roger Kimbrough of Memphis, Tenn., Dennis Kimbrough of Cayce; a sister, Flora Dell Bowens of Chicago, Ill.; two brothers, Solomon Woodson of Holly Springs, Charles Mason of Lamar; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Hazell Riddle, Karl Campbell, Roosevelt Reeves, Mark Bland, Hubert Riddle, Ralph Howard, Maurice Campbell and James Riddle.
Willie James Laird
Retired Staff Sgt. Willie James Laird, 65, of Waterford, died June 11, 2006 in Arkansas. He was infantry unit leader in the Marine Corps and a Marine veteran of Vietnam. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 14 at Bethlehem Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Steve Wilson officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Joyce Laird; two sons, Randal James Laird of Southaven, Jimmy Rines of Lake Cormorant; three daughters, Deborah Gail Buchanan of Olive Branch, Rachel Baldwyn, Rebecca Verrell, both of New Albany; three sisters, Elsie Louise Maners of Henning, Tenn., Norma Jean Laird of Ripley, Tenn., Evelyn Pierce of Memphis, Tenn.; and 11 grandchildren.
Carol O’Roark McDermott
Carol O’Roark McDermott, 65, of Byhalia, formerly of Marked Tree, Ark., died June 8 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. She was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on June 12 in Marked Tree Cemetery. Jerry Benya officiated. Murphy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, John McDermott; a son, Frank McDermott of Byhalia; a daughter, Lea Shannon Kelley of Southaven; her mother, Florine O’Roark of Maumelle; a sister, Nancy Wier of Maumelle; and five grandchildren.
Casey Rhea
Casey Rhea, 83, of Holly Springs, died June 8, 2006 at Trinity Missions Health and Rehab in Holly Springs. He was the widower of Gladys Rhea. He was a Baptist, a factory worker with Clipper Abrasives and an Army veteran of World War II.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 11 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Bro. Frank Feathers officiated.
He leaves three sons, Casey Rhea Jr. of Southaven, Danny Rhea of Potts Camp, Bobby Rhea of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Brenda Anderson of Holly Springs; a brother, J.R. Rhea of Texas; two sisters, Margaret Hollifield of Byhalia, Elsie Thompson of Blue Mountain; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Doris Shaw Smith
Doris Shaw Smith, 82, of Holly Springs, died June 10, 2006 at her home. She was the widow of Kenneth S. Smith, her husband of 50 years who was a former sheriff of Marshall County. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 12 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Bro. Curtis Ferrell officiated.
She leaves a son, Kenneth Shawn Smith of Holly Springs; two daughters, Dottie Smith Wilson of Memphis, Tenn., Sherry Smith Reed of Cordova, Tenn.; a sister, Jessie Davis of Holly Springs; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Sidney Shaw and John Shaw.
Johnnie H. Taylor
Johnnie H. Taylor, 86, of Collierville, Tenn., died June 2, 2006 at Methodist Hospital, Germantown, Tenn. She was employed with Wonder Products Co. in production, a member of Amaziah Baptist Church and formerly a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Slayden.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 4 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in McKay Cemetery in Hickory Flat. Bro. Billy Adair and Bro. Jason Howell officiated.
She leaves two daughters, Eleanor Craft of Moscow, Tenn., Norma Drew of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Billy Hampton of Collierville, Tenn.; two sisters, Ruth Hailey of Gulfport, Doris Arrowood of Memphis, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son John Taylor Jr.
