Mauce McCalla

Mauce McCalla, 89, of Red Banks, died Oct. 27, 2006 at Baptist Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. She was the widow of John Francis McCalla. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She was a former member of Advent Presbyterian Church.

Services were held at 12 noon on Oct. 30 at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

She leaves a son, Roy Jones of Pulaski, Tenn.; a stepson, John McCalla of Statesville, N.C.; two daughters, Melba Owen, Jean Dunn, both of Red Banks; a brother, Gordan McDugle of San Antonio, Tx.; three sisters, Ruby Hawkins of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dale Morris of Louisville, Ky., Juanita Mansfield of Memphis, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Brownie Anderson.

Martha Clyde Boone McCollum

Martha Clyde Boone McCollum, 90, of Holly Springs, formerly of Germantown, died Oct. 20, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. She was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and a member of Germantown Baptist Church.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Hill Crest Cemetery.

She leaves a brother, Tom Boone of Holly Springs.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Dockery, Sidney Seale Boone; and a brother, Claude Boone.

The family requests memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church of Holly Springs.

Florida Bell Holland Riddle

Florida Bell Holland Riddle, 91, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Holly Springs, died Oct. 18, 2006 at Loretto Hospital in Chicago. She was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, a church usher, a former member of Gray’s Chapel CME Church in Hudsonville and a retired seamstress with a drapery factory in Chicago.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 28 at Anderson Chapel CME Church. Burial was in Gray’s Chapel CME Church Cemetery. Rev. Joe Lester officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a daughter, Bertha Leach of Chicago; a granddaughter who cared for her, Valerie Leach of Chicago; two brothers, Edgar Holland of Holly Springs, Robert Hopkins of St. Louis, Mo.; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph Holland, Fred Holland, Selner Holland, Eugene Anderson.

Pallbearers were Chester Holland, Willie Riddle, Jessie Holland, Fred Holland, Chris Holland and George Scott Jr. Honorary pallbearers were members of Union Missionary Baptist Church and members of Gray’s Chapel CME Church family.

Girtha Lee Elliott Richard

Girtha Lee Elliott Richard, 68, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 25, 2006 at her home.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Oct. 29 at Shiloh MB Church in Ashland, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Steven Glass officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three daughters, Linda Sellers, Gwen Mayfield, Connie Aldridge, all of Holly Springs; three sons, Thamas Richard, T.C. Richard Jr., Lenward Richard, all of Holly Springs; a brother, Joe G. Elliott of Holly Springs; 26 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Morse Richard.

Pallbearers were Randy Richard, Curtis Aldridge Jr., Isaac Mayfield, Thomas Kimmons, Tyrone Richard, Anthony Greer and Bryan Richard. Honorary pallbearers were Thomas Richard, Lenward Richard, Anthony Sellers, T.C. Richard Jr., Curtis Aldridge and Raymond Mayfield.

Gerald Orville Skogstag

Gerald Orville (Jerry) Skogstad, 82, of Byhalia, died Oct. 23, 2006 at his home. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Brantley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Mildred Skogstad; a stepdaughter, Cathy Eaves; a stepson, Gifford Brown; two stepgranddaughters; and three sisters, Martha Makken of Bellflower, Calif., Gladys Qualey of International Falls, Minn. and Alma Heskin of Roseau, Minn.

Lee Vester Turner

Lee Vester Turner, 40, of New Albany, died Oct. 23, 2006 in Houston. He grew up attending Reeves St. Church of God, now Holy Temple.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Oct. 28 at Holy Temple C.O.G. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in New Albany. Elder Charles Ferrel officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Sarah Turner; his father, Cecatral Turner of New Albany; foster children Breanna and Tyesha Gillard of Faulkner; brothers, Gus Hill Turner of West Palm Beach, Fla, Barry Arms of Texas, Michael Anthony Foster of New Albany; sisters, Billie Fay Joy, Lottie Boles of New Albany, Telisha Turner of Coral Springs, Fla, Celestine Holloman of Pontotoc, and Parletha Hall of Verona.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Fannie Lou Turner and grandparents.

Pallbearers were Marcus Robinson, David Lesure, Joshua Millsap, Willie Waldrop, Tyrone Gillard and Larry Gillard Jr.

Sarah Bogan Walton

Sarah Bogan Walton, 93, of Byhalia, died Oct. 21, 2006 at Delta Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Services were held at 12 noon on Oct. 25 at Issac Chapel CME Church in Byhalia, where she was a member. Burial was in Mt. Sinai MB Church Cemetery in Byhalia. Rev. Willie Ward officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband of more than 72 years, George Walton; two daughters, Anita Moore of Holly Springs, Evelyn O. Thompson of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Ellen Bogan Bell of Holly Springs; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Charles Moore, Bretran Thompson, Rodney Thompson, Anthony Thompson, Lazera Thompson, Joseph Brown, James Rayford, Maurice Bell and Orndoff Matthews Jr. Honorary pallbearers were David Beckley, Paul Lampley, Ben Cole II, Lawrence Autry, Michael Hampton, Joseph (Mack) Matthews, Sam Richmond, Warren Matthews and trustees of the church.

Walter Newton Bell

Walter Newton Bell, 81, of Middleton, Tenn., formerly of Marshall County, died Oct. 6, 2006 at his home. He lived in Memphis for 45 years where he was owner and operator of Bell-Harden Heating. He moved to the Middleton area in 1995 and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 9 at Shackelford Funeral Directors Middleton Chapel. Burial was in Middleton City Cemetery. Don Adams and Shane Scott officiated.

He leaves his wife, Inez Johnson Bell; three daughters, Vicki Dupree of Germantown, Tenn., Rebecca Jones of Henderson, Carol Adams of Greenville, Tenn.; two sons, Walter Bell Jr. of Nashville, David Bell of Middleton; a sister, Olive Mae Fore; a brother, John Grady Bell, both of Holly Springs; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
