Alice Mullins Ayers
Alice Mullins Ayers, 72, of Memphis, Tenn., died Feb. 8, 2006 at her home.
Services were held at 12 noon on Feb. 14 at Shiloh MB Church in Ashland, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Dr. Roosevelt T. Joyner officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a daughter, Anne Rockett-Phillips of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Lottie Mae Payne of Holly Springs; two brothers, Eugene Mullins of Holly Springs, James Lewis Mullins of Memphis, Tenn.; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jeremy Martin, Taylor Phillips, Devin Rockett, Kevin Smith, Quentin Ayers and Clarence Ayers III.
Thomas Howard Buford
Thomas Howard Buford, 83, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 11, 2006 at his home. He was the retired postmaster of Holly Springs, having retired in December of 1988. He served in World War II and later. He served in the Normandy campaign in France and later in Belgium and Germany while in the 438th anti-aircraft artillery battalion. After the war, he served in the United States Army artillery reserves, retiring in 1961 with the rank of captain. He was a Boy Scout leader, organizing Troop 119 of Holly Springs and was honored with the Silver Beaver award.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Holly Springs, where he was a member. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Dr. Milton Winter officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Tommy Jean Martin Buford; a daughter, Pamela Jean Bray of Holly Springs; three sons, Thomas Howard Buford Jr. of Lexington, Ky., Robert Carlisle Buford of Potts Camp, Donald Eugene Buford of Holly Springs; a brother, Richard L. Buford of Madison; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jenny Dale Bell, Ernestine Smallwood; and three brothers, Charles, Julius and Dudley.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Albert Rodger Cunningham
Albert Rodger Cunningham, 71, of Olive Branch, died Feb. 7, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis, Tenn. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a mechanic.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb 10 at Carey Chapel Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. O.E. Langner and Bro. Doug Bell officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Esther Ruth Cunningham; three sons, Joseph Rodger Cunningham, Danny Patrick Cunningham, both of Red Banks, William Douglas Cunningham of Southaven; a daughter, Linda Kay Hornbeck of Olive Branch; two brothers, John Paul Cunningham of Olive Branch, Bobby Joe Cunningham of Mt. Home, Ark.; two sisters, Florence Petrowski of Red Banks, Nancy Puckett of Greenfield, Tenn.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, April Marie Cunningham.
Pallbearers were Joe Cunningham, Danny Cunningham, Randy McClatchy, Wayne Hornbeck, Fred West, Doug Cunningham, Mark Watkins, Little Joe Cunningham, Scott Templeton and Brent Carpenter.
Reddick Duncan
Reddick Duncan, 68, of Ashland, died Feb. 7, 2006 at Briarcrest Nursing Home in Ashland.
Services were held at 12 noon on Feb. 11 at Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red Banks. Burial was in the church cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves three daughters, Deloris Jackson of Memphis, Tenn., Willie Eva Duncan, Lula B. Duncan, both of Holly Springs; three sons, Stanley Duncan, George Duncan, Charles Duncan, all of Holly Springs; three sisters, Lizz Fuzz, Mae Ree Jones, Catherine Jones, all of Memphis, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.
Estelle Dunn Blakely
Estelle Dunn Blakely, 83, of Abbeville, died Jan. 27, 2006 at her cousin’s home in Memphis, Tenn. She was the widow of Chess Dunn. She was a member of the mother board and a former choir member. She was a dietician with the school cafeteria at Oxford City Schools.
Services were held at 12 noon on Feb. 1 at East St. Peter MB Church in Abbeville, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. William Woods Jr. officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a cousin who cared for her, Willie L. Laird of Memphis, Tenn.; and a brother, Johnny Britten of Oxford.
Selena Brannon
Selena Brannon, 87, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 1, 2006 at her home. She was a member of Finley Grove MB Church in Holly Springs and a member of the Mother’s Board. She was the head cook at Colonial Cafe truck stop.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 6 at Hopewell No. 1 MB Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. James Green officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves two daughters, Gracie Vinson of Memphis, Tenn., Lena Mae Vinson of Holly Springs; three sisters, Mary Avington of Memphis, Tenn., Lizzie Ruth Keys of Aurora, Ill., Juliette Williams of Holly Springs; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Marvin Vinson, Martin Vinson, James Vinson, Kenneth Vinson, Juantonio Tatum and Jerry Avington. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Morris, Clinton Odell, Patrick Vinson and Joseph Vinson.
Sarah Ruth Crossnoe
Sarah Ruth Crossnoe, 81, of Byhalia, died Feb. 6, 2006 at Methodist Germantown Hospital.
Services were held graveside at Magnolia Cemetery in Collierville, Tenn. on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. Bro. Waid Wilkes officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Powell Crossnoe; three daughters, Sara Delashmit, Brenda Collins, both of Barton, Laurie Baker of Collerville; a sister, Shirley Forsythe of Big Sandy, Tenn.; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Gray.
Pallbearers were Ray Collins, Ryan Baker, Stan Ellison, Jackie Dunlap, Mark Baker, James Cox, Gerald Smith.
Bulah Mae Penilton Gulledge
Bulah Mae Penilton Gulledge, 63, of Lamar, died Feb. 1, 2006 at her home. She was the widow of David Gulledge. She was an usher, a member of the choir, a stewardess, an assistant teacher at Holly Springs Intermediate School and Sand Flat High School. She was an assembly line worker for 20 years at Carrier, Inc., in Collierville, Tenn.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 5 at Hudsonville CME Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby G. Wilson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves two daughters, Bernetta Coleman, Almetta Faulkner, both of Holly Springs; three sons, Rev. David L. Gulledge, Darryl Gulledge, Donald Gulledge, all of Lamar; her father, Tom Penilton of Lamar; a sister, Venoria Hurdle of Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, Robert L. Penilton, Ernest Stephens, both of Lamar, Lawrence Johnson of Memphis, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Charles Isom, David Glass, Michael Penilton, Curtis Isom, Ajacca Penilton and Christopher Penilton. Honorary pallbearers were Cedric Faulkner, Andrew Hurdle, Andre’ Coleman, Darryl Gulledge, Glen Coleman Sr., Glen Coleman Jr., Marcus Isom and Bradley Coleman.
