Mary Walker Jones Penilton, 65, of Slayden, died Dec. 12, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. She was a member of Hudsonville CME Church, a member of the choir, trustee, stewardess, evangelist on the local and district level, president of the Lift Group, Heroines of Jericho and H.W. Byers Athletic Booster Club. She was a driver for Meals on Wheels, Community Action Agency.
Services were held at 12 noon on Dec. 17 at Hudsonville CME Church Family Life Center. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby G. Wilson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Robert L. Penilton; a daughter, Patricia A. Glass of Slayden; four sons, Michael Penilton of Laws Hill, Ajacca B. Penilton, Robert E. Penilton, Christopher G. Penilton, all of Slayden; her mother, Lillie Littlejohn Moore of Slayden; four sisters, Emma Jones, Cora Moore, Everlean Moore, all of Memphis, Tenn., Annie Lee Mayfield of Slayden; a brother, Rufus Moore of Memphis, Tenn.; and 16 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by Booker T. and Mary Briggs, who raised her; and a brother, Hiram Crutcher.
Pallbearers were Curtis Greer, Justin Fitch, Bradley Coleman, Lamoyen Jones, Kelton Moore, Kelly Crutcher, Leonard Jones Jr. and Donald Gulledge. Honorary pallbearers were Ajacca Penilton Jr., Brian Penilton, David Glass Jr., Robert Penilton Jr., Michael Penilton Jr., Christopher Penilton Jr., Walter Crutcher and Darryl Gulledge.
Shirley Mae Herod Vaughn
Shirley Mae Herod Vaughn, 49, of Abbeville, died Dec. 10, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital - Oxford. She graduated from Lafayette High School. She was employed with Emerson Electric for 26 years.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 16 at Jesus Crown of Life Apostolic in Oxford. Burial was in St. Peters Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Annie Hickinbottom officiated. Serenity Funeral Home of Oxford was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Avant Vaughn Jr.; her three children, Avant Jermaine Vaughn, Felicia Vaughn, Ashley Vaughn, all of Abbeville; three brothers, Leland Herod of Oxford, Charles Herod of Abbeville, James Herod of Oxford; four sisters, Dorothy Fisher of Indianapolis, Ind., Flora Dean, Gloria Bogard of Oxford, Bobbie Burton of Abbeville; and eight grandchildren.
Bertha M. Cade
Bertha M. Cade, 83, of Byhalia, died Dec. 8, 2006 at her home. She was a retired owner and operator of Cade and Haskett Florist and a Methodist.
She leaves her husband, Jesse H. (Jack) Cade Jr.; and three brothers, Tommy Mooring of Newport, Ark., John Ellis Mooring Jr. of Byhalia, Sam Mooring of Flint, Mich.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Donald Allen Crain
Donald Allen Crain, 55, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 6, 2006 at Baptist DeSoto in Southaven. He was a member of the Men’s Club and the Vestry at Christ Episcopal Church, and a finance sales consultant. He was a member of the Byhalia Chamber of Commerce, a former member of the Byhalia Lions Club, an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Byhalia High School, Class of 1969. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 9 at Christ Episcopal Church in Holly Springs, where he was a member. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Rev. Bruce McMillan and Rev. Vickie White officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Carey Rather Crain; a son, Donald Allen Crain Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Sarah Frances Crain of Jackson; two brothers, Charles Crain of Byhalia, Vic Crain of Denver, Colo.; and two sisters, Sarah Fay Sawyer of Byhalia, Nell Schmidt of Long Beach.
Pallbearers were Kelly Crain, Ken Crain, Seth Crain, Randle House, Charly McClatchy, Ben Tucker, Anderson Sawyer and Scott Sawyer.

Jessie Ometa Griffin, 60, of Potts Camp, died Dec. 5, 2006 at her home. She was a member of Oak Hill Christian Church in Michie, Tenn., and a florist with Connie’s Flowers.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Oak Hill Christian Church Cemetery.
She leaves a son, Kevin Griffin of Holly Springs; a daughter, Michelle Watts of Potts Camp; a brother, Grady Jackson of Counce, Tenn.; two sisters, Sue Smith of Corinth, Sharon Jackson of Potts Camp; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Tracy Griffin.
Elder Cecil Guthrie
Elder Cecil Guthrie, 81, of Springfield, Jamaica, died Dec. 6, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North MS in Oxford. He was born in Springfield; he moved to Oxford 40 years ago.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 9 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Abbeville.
He leaves two daughters, Lillian Kay Guthrie of Jacksonville, Fla., Ulonda Guthrie of Kansas City, Mo.; three brothers, Wesley Guthrie of Louisville, Ky., Victor Guthrie of Port Lucie, Fla., Hemard Guthrie of England.

Nelda Kathryn Mason, 77, of Memphis, Tenn., died Dec. 9, 2006 at Methodist Hospital South in Memphis, Tenn. She was a Methodist.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 12 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Valley Grove Cemetery in Michigan City.
She leaves her husband, David Harold Mason; a son, David H. Mason Jr. of Memphis; three daughters, Nelda Skinner of Memphis, Linda M. Finley of Olive Branch, Nancy Shelton of Michigan City; three brothers, Buddy Hinton, Clarence Hinton, Lowell Hinton, all of Corinth; and eight grandchildren.
Ferrell Lee Moore
Ferrell Lee Moore, 80, of Holly Springs, died Dec. 6, 2006 at his home. He was a member of Holly Springs Presbyterian Church, a merchant with F.L. Moore Grocery and an armed forces veteran.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Dec. 7 at Hill Crest Cemetery. Dr. Curtis Ferrell and Bro. Don Wilson officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Betty Holbrook Moore; three daughters, Karen M. Holley of Hernando, Grace Moore Woods of Byhalia, Teresa M. Clarkson of Olive Branch; a brother, Boyd E. Moore of Holly Springs; a sister, Sarah Moore Williams of Potts Camp; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Leigh Moore Clark.
