Mattie A. McNeil

Mattie A. McNeil, 94, died April 22, 2007. She was the widow of Brooks McNeil.

Services were held at 12 noon on April 28 at Botts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Olive Branch. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gillespie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves seven daughters, Catharine Williams, Dorothy Martin, Mattie McNeil, Lula McNeil, all of Byhalia, Daisy McNeil of Memphis, Tenn., Evelyn Falkner of Olive Branch, Effie Owens of St. Louis, Mo.; five sons, Brooks McNeil Jr. of Chicago, Ill., Frank McNeil Sr., Edward McNeil, both of Byhalia, Horace McNeil, Curtis McNeil, both of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Louis Leonard of St. Louis, Mo.; 29 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Mattie B. Polk

Mattie B. Polk, 59, of Byhalia, died April 23, 2007. She was the widow of Joe Louis Polk.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 26 at New Mt. Gilliam Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in Watson Cemetery, Byhalia.

She leaves four daughters, Jo Ivory Polk of Southaven, Leatha Stevenson, Chinita Polk, both of Memphis, Tenn., Jo Ann Owens of Byhalia; four sons, Garrett Polk, Terrence Polk, James Polk, all of Byhalia, Joe Polk Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; a godson, John Townsend of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Ethel Mitchell of Byhalia; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Roscoe Rucker

Roscoe Rucker, 37, of Potts Camp died April 21, 2007 at his home. He was a former employee of Carlisle’s Big Star, and was employed at Marshall County Correctional, serving as administrative segregation sergeant.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 28 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. A private burial was held.

He leaves his wife, Shelia Wilson Rucker; a son, Nickoe Rucker of Potts Camp; a daughter, Sabrina Villion of Forrest City, Ark., a sister, Kimberly Ingram of Water Valley; his father, David McDaniel; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Charles Montgomery Alvis III

Charles (Ned) Montgomery Alvis III, 75, of Olive Branch, died April 19, 2007 at Primacy Estates. He was the widower of Jeanette Gullett, a Methodist and an electrician.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a sister, Rhetta (Boots) Alvis Page of Olive Branch; two nieces, Sylvia Akin of Memphis, Tenn., Jill Bruehl of Cordova, Tenn.; and a nephew, Charles Harmon of Jackson.

Bessie Louise Rushing Arnold

Bessie Louise Rushing Arnold, 89, of Holly Springs, died April 22, 2007. She was the widow of Billy R. Arnold, who died in 1996. She moved to Holly Springs in 1950 when her husband took a position at the North Mississippi Branch Experiement Station as the station’s research agronomist. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Holly Springs from 1950 until her health declined in 2003, actively involved in Methodist Women’s Circle and in children’s programs. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a leader in Girl Scouts of America. In 1960 she began work with the Agircultural Research Service at the North Mississippi Branch Experienment Station and worked there until her retirement in 1983.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on April 24 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel.

She leaves a daughter, Carold Arnold Woods of Holly Springs; two granddaughters, Jorja Arnold Bain of Holly springs, Genna Arnold of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandsons, Daniel Woods of Chapel Hill, Tenn., Mark Woods of Nashville, Tenn., Josh Woods of Starkville; three great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Holly Springs or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Victor Lamar Baker Sr.

Victor Lamar Baker Sr., 72, of Holly Springs, died April 22, 2007 at Greenwood-Leflore County Hospital in Greenwood. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and employed with Quality Tire of Memphis, Tenn. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Services were held at 3 p.m. on April 24 at Coleman Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Rev. Milton Boyd officiated. Burial was in Midway Cemetery in Lafayette County.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Gloria Baker; two daughters, Joyce Phillips of Holly Springs, Lane Dye of Sardis; two sons, Victor Baker Jr., Duncan Baker, both of Holly Springs; three sisters, Esther Mize of Oxford, Faye Smith of Batesville, Beatrice Faust of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, J.P. Baker of Oxford; and four grandchildren.

Azzie Lee Dean

Azzie Lee Dean, 102, of Holly Springs, died April 12, 2007 at Golden Living Nursing Home in Batesville. She was the widow of George (Judge)Dean, a chief usher and former choir member.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 21 at Bell Grove MB Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. George Marion officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a daughter, Emlie Dorothy Richardson of Holly Springs; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bobby Steward, Eddie Richardson, Jarmaine Driver and Billy Richardson Sr. Honorary pallbearers were Douglas Holloway, Buck Richardson, Martell Goodman, Billy W. Richardson, Terico Richardson and Martavie Edward.

Carolyn Jordan

Carolyn Jordan, 76, of Ashland, died April 21, 2007 at Alliance Healthcare System. She was a member of Ashland Church of Christ.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on April 23 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Ashland Cemetery. Dr. Curtis Ferrell officiated.

She leaves her husband, Boyce Jordan; a son, Kelly Jordan and his wife Susan of Holly Springs; sisters Brenda Williams of Southaven, Sandra Graves of Ripley and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Don Jeanes, Danny Jeanes, Mitch Carroll, Brian Jeanes, Bobby Miller and David Childers.

Evelyn Payne Kidd

Evelynn Payne Kidd, 94, of Williamsburg, Va., died April 17, 2007 at Dominion Village of Williamsburg Home. She was the widow of George E. Kidd and a Presbyterian. She was retired from the financial department of The College of William and Mary.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on April 21 at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Bro. Bobby McKay officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a nephew, Scott Payne of Florida; in-laws, Hallie K. Chatham, Craig S. Kidd of Holly Springs, Aunice Birmingham of Olive Branch, Helene E. Doxey of Waveland, Ralph and Jean Doxey of Holly Springs, Mrs. Clayton Kidd of Brookhaven, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Kidd of Roanoke, Va., Russell G. Kidd of Fredericksburg, Va.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or The Humane Society.
