Lester H. Tipler

Lester H. Tipler, 74, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Lamar, died Aug. 9, 2007 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was disabled.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 18 at Greenwood MB Church in Lamar, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Darvin O. Sanders officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves four daughters, Jernice T. Robinson of Dallas, Tx., Dorothy Jean Wriden, Lestine Tipler, Carolyn Maris, all of Memphis, Tenn.; three brothers, Albert Tipler of Ashland, Miller Tipler Jr., Sylvester Tipler, both of Memphis, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Tipler.

Pallbearers were Steve Tipler, William Tipler, Keith G. Tipler, Gaither Tipler, Gerry Marris and Montreal Green.

Troy Luna Young

Troy Luna Young, 76, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 15, 2007 at Hwy. 178 W. He was a Baptist and a welder.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 22 at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves a daughter, Mary Jane Watson of Brownsville, Tenn.; two brothers, William Lee Young of Red Banks, James Freddie Young of Holly Springs; two sisters, Barbara Young of West Virginia, Keri Morton of Gulfport; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Alice Virginia Turner Allen

Alice Virginia Turner, 95, of Holly Springs, died July 28, 2007 at her home. She was the widow of Rev. Smith W. Allen, her husband of 63 years. She was president of the advisory board of Rust College, former president Ministers’ Wives Association, former president of the United Methodist Women, member of Retired Teachers Association, member of Department of Social Work, Advisory Council at Rust College. She was a retired educator in public elementary schools of Mississippi.

Services were held at 12 noon on Aug. 4 at Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Fred Brown officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Gwendolyn Allen-Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., Sandra (Sandi) Allen-Stovall of Holly Springs; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Constance Allen-Scott; and a son, Timothy Bernard Allen.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Joseph Aurelius Johnson, Mitra C. Allen; great-grandsons, Atlas Darrell Robinson, Jerome Carrithers; and great-grandsons-in-law, Delwin Barnes, Juan Seals. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. David L. Beckley, Dr. William D. Scott III, Dr. Ishmell Edwards, Donald Street and Adell Walker.

Bobbie Fish

Bobbie Fish, 65, of Olive Branch, died Aug. 1, 2007 at Baptist East Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. She was a member of Forest Hill Baptist Church, a member of the Southern Bell Doll Club and a beautician.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 4 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Carey Chapel Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Dr. Tommy Snyder officiated.

She leaves her husband, Robert Fish; a daughter, Deanna Fish of Germantown; her parents, Fred Lee and Minnie Edwards of Red Banks; a brother, Kirby Edwards of Red Banks; and a sister, Kathy Skelton of Holly Springs.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Melinda Fish.

Clyde Hester Hopkins

Clyde Hester Hopkins, 43, of Potts Camp, died Aug. 1, 2007 in Falkner. He was a truck driver for Rolison Logging and a Baptist.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 4 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Hickory Flat. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery in Ashland. Bro. Jimmy Wilbanks officiated. McBride Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves two daughters, Kori A. Hopkins, Amberly C. Hopkins, both of Falkner; a son, Austin Cole of Falkner; his mother, Ida Lee Lumpkin Goode of Potts Camp; a step-daughter, Sharmin Mullins of Ripley; four sisters, Mary Etta Russell of Mt. Pleasant, Geneva Ann Yeager of Byhalia, Linda Carolyn Derrick of Myrtle, Judy Faye Leopard of Victoria; and five brothers, David Lee Hopkins, Dennis Wesley Hopkins, Jimmy Wilder Hopkins, George Franklin Hopkins, all of Potts Camp, Bobby Benton Hopkins of Falkner.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Hopkins.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Yeager, Jimmy Hopkins, Johnny Culver, Mark Lax, Joseph Smith, Dennis Hopkins and Donald Warren.

Sadie May Hoyle Hunt

Sadie May Hoyle Hunt, 67, of Moscow, Tenn., formerly of Michigan City, died July 27, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Union Hill MB Church in Michigan City, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Randell Woodard officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

She leaves four daughters, Ethel Liggins of Memphis, Tenn., Doris Harges, Bobbie Franklin, Sadie Bolden, all of Moscow, Tenn.; four sons, James Hunt Jr. of Moscow, Dale Hunt of Arlington, Tenn., Willie Hunt, Anthony Hunt, both of Grand Junction, Tenn.; two brothers, Roosevelt Hoyle, C.L. Hoyle, both of Michigan City; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Roosevelt Hoyle Jr., Booker T. Barber, Willie Hoyle, Travis Reaves, James Hoyle and Sam Hoyle. Honorary pallbearers were sons and grandsons.

Harry Robert McCleary Jr.

Harry Robert (Bobby) McCleary Jr., 76, of Kat Bar Farm, Byhalia, died Aug. 5, 2007 at The University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Ky. From 1952-1954, he served in the United States Army, in the Korean Conflict. A resident of Shelby County for more then 50 years, he resided in Memphis, Germantown and Collierville, prior to moving to Byhalia in 1983. He was the retired president of McCleary, Inc., which was a successor company to McCleary Brothers, Inc. and McCleary Industries, which were founded by his father and uncle. For many years, he was active in trade associations relating to the laundry and dry cleaning supply industry. In retirement, he was involved with equine and equipment transportation across the county. He was a member of The Church of the Incarnation in Collierville, Tenn. Since childhood, he had participated in horse shows. He was active in American Quarter Horse Association activities and he was a past president of the Frontier Saddle Club. Earlier in his career, he had been a member of the Memphis Jaycees.

Funeral mass was said at 10 a.m. on Aug. 9 in the main sanctuary of Church of the Incarnation. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn.

He leaves his wife, Bonnie Reeds McCleary; four daughters, Amanda Lyn McCleary of Byhalia, Karen McCleary Metz of Vienna, Va, Teresa Marie McCleary of Collierville, Alisa Frances McCleary of Michigan City; a son, Harry Robert (Rob) McCleary III of Memphis; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the nearest animal shelter or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Johnnie W. McDowell

Johnnie W. McDowell, 97, of Aberdeen, died Aug. 3, 2007 at Personal Place. She was the widow of Banks McDowell. She was a public school teacher for 14 years before becoming city clerk for the city of Okolona, where she served for many years. She was a lifelong member of the Okolona Presbyterian Church.

She leaves her son, Sam McDowell of Ana Marie Island, Fla.; two grandchildren; and among her nieces, Martha Carlisle of Holly Springs.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 6 at Martin/Walker Family Plot at Oddfellows Cemetery in Okolona. Rev. Sandra Sisson and Rev. David Harrell officiated. Holland-Harris Funeral Directors, Okolona Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
