Clara Mae Word Overstreet
Clara Mae Word Overstreet, 89, of Ashland, died Sept. 19, 2013. She was the widow of Dennis S. Overstreet, her husband of 59 years. She grew up on her parent’s cotton farm near Clarksdale in the Mississippi Delta. She graduated from Sunflower High School. She and her husband resided in Miami, Fla., for many years before retiring at Snow Lake. She was an active member of Ashland Baptist Church and the Azarian Sunday School class.
Services were held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 23 at Ashland Baptist Church. Dr. Gerald Hodges officiated. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Clarksdale, with Rev. Don Brown officiating. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a daughter, Deanie Sloan (Sidney) of Snow Lake; her brothers, Ed L. (Naomi) Word of Cumming, Ga., Raney H. (Holly) Word of Hollywood, Fla., Charles Excell (Carolyn) Word of Clarksdale; a sister, Elsie Word (Don)Brown of Ashland; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel Hal Word and Louie S. Word; and one sister, Doris Word Shield.
Nelean L. Palmer
Nelean L. Palmer, 84, of Byhalia, died Sept. 20, 2013, at her home. She was the widow of Jack Palmer.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Forest Hill South Funeral Home Chapel.
She leaves her sons Veto Mills of Byhalia, Jerry Banks Mills of Mesa, Ariz.; her daughter, Pat Spence of Byhalia; several brothers and sisters; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Jimmy Royce Hobbs, Ralph Wayne Mills.
In Loving Memory of James Otto Moore Jr.
James Otto Moore Jr. passed away on September 14, 2013, at his home. James was born May 13, 1937 to Alma Olivia (Westmoreland) and James Otto Moore Sr. He served his country as a medic in the United States Air Force from 1956-1962. In 1966, James married Helen Louise Stanton. He lived and worked most of his life as a carpenter and tradesman in Holly Springs, MS, where they raised two daughters, Reba Dale (Moore) Trayler and Karen Michelle Moore.
James was preceded in death by his father and mother, brother Sam Moore, and Helen, his wife of forty years. He leaves his brothers, Jerry O. Moore Sr. and James Harold (Sonny) Pryor Jr.; his sisters, Mary Dale Pryor and Ann Pryor all of Holly Springs; his daughters, Reba of Sheridan, WY, and Karen of Midlothian, VA; three granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter. Above all, James loved his family. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Sheila Gail Thomas Burnett
Sheila Gail Thomas Burnett of Durango, Colorado, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2013, at Grand Junction, Colorado.
Funeral services were Sunday, September 21, 2013, at 3 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, Charleston, Miss. Burial was in the Burnett Family Cemetery. Reverend Andy Halsy officiated. Newsom Funeral Home in Charleston was in charge.
The former resident of Charleston, MS, was born August 18, 1946, in Oxford, MS. After living the first six years of her life in Toccopola Junction, she and her family moved to Holly Springs, MS, where she went on to be an honor graduate of Holly Springs High School. She attended Northwest Mississippi Junior College and was a member of the Rangerette Dance Squad. After raising three sons, she attended Delta State University on an academic scholarship and earned a Bachelor Degree in Interior Design. She enjoyed making Christmas Angels and manger scenes. Through her years in Charleston, she served as a volunteer at the Tallahatchie General Hospital, Cub Scout Leader, President of the Strider Academy Parents Club, as well as serving as a Sunday School teacher at the First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, MS. Since relocating to Colorado in 2009, she joined the First Methodist Church in Durango. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Congregation Care Team who did in-home visits with Alzheimer Patients. After one of her patients passed away, she continued the visits with the 97-year-old spouse who was blind. She was a volunteer at the Durango Nursing Home and was active with the Adaptive Sports for Skiing and hosted several handicap participants in her home. She was a beloved member of Moxie Hikers and Skiers, a friend of the Durango Library and was a member in several area Book Clubs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Burnett of Charleston, and her parents, K.B. Thomas and Ezsma Pipkin Thomas of Holly Springs, MS. She is survived by three sons, Damon (Kristie) Stroud, and John Ball (Angie) Burnett Jr., both of Charleston; and Nathan (Heather) Burnett of Grenada; eight grandchildren: Cord Singleton of Yazoo City, MS, Kody and Destyne Stroud of Charleston; Ann and John Ball Burnett III of Charleston, and Savannah, Lylah Kate and Nathan Burnett Jr. of Grenada, MS; two sisters, Patricia Arnett of Holly Springs, and Nancy (Ron) Coffler of Rockford, Illinois; along with three nieces and three nephews.
The family asks that all memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Charleston/Family Life Center.
John William Britt
“Billy”
John William “Billy” Britt, 62, of Olive Branch, died Sept. 23, 2013, at Methodist Olive Branch. He was a roofer and a member of Cowboy Church in Como. He was born in Ripley to the late John Clyde Britt and Susie Burnett Britt.
Visitation services will be held Thursday, Sept. 26, 5-8 p.m. with services Friday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Holly Springs Funeral Home. Burial will be in Canaan Baptist in Canaan, MS.
He leaves one daughter, Beth Tucker (Nathan) of Byhalia; one brother, Billy Ray Britt of Southaven; two sissters, Shirley Shufelt and Gail Marchese, both of Olive Branch; four grandchildren, Jessie White, Liz Brantley, Ambrosia Brantley and Joseph Tucker; one great-grandchild, Kenzlee Rose Murphy; three nieces, Lisa Lunday, Jennifer Andresky, and Amy Bogel; two nephews, Britt Marchese and Jeremey Stewart.
Elder Lawrence Echols
Elder Lawrence Echols, 83, of Byhalia, died Jan. 18, 2013, at his home. He was a member of Gospel Temple COGIC in Moscow, Tenn., where he was a deacon and elder and sang in the choir. He was a former pastor at Temple of Joy COGIC in Memphis, Tenn., and a member of Chosen Generation singing group. He was a retired furnace tapper at Chromium Mining and Smelting Co.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 26 at Gospel Temple COGIC. Burial was in Mt. Sinai COGIC Church Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Bishop David Hall officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, evangelist Lue City Watson Echols; five daughters, Sarah Jo Smith of Austin, Tx., Ruby Jean Echols of Memphis, Joy Zella Echols of Byhalia, Wanda Fay Faulkner, Brenda Kay Echols, both of Oceanside, Calif.; a son Richard Jewell Echols of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Billy Echols of Memphis; 23 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Echols Jr.; daughters Pamela Reshell Echols-Holt and Glenda Kay Echols-Moore; and a grandchild.
Maxine Hurt
Maxine Hurt, 75, of Ripley, died Jan. 20, 2013, at Tippah County Hospital Nursing Home in Ripley. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a bookkeeper.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 23 at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bluff Springs Cemetery. Dr. Jack Bennett and Bro. Rusty Miller officiated.
She leaves a daughter, Carol Anne Hurt (Craig Forsythe) of Ripley; a son, David “Big Daddy” Hurt (Jade) of Ripley; a sister, Anielene Brissette (Rick) of Ripley; a brother, Milton Bryant (Becky) of Holly Springs; a grandchild and a step-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Jeff Bryant, Randy Presley, Kerry Cockrell, Ronnie Richardson, Tay Smith, Brandon Martindale and Laron Shannon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
Kathy C. Janes
Kathy C. Janes, 45, of Byhalia, died Jan. 16, 2013, in the Watson Community. She was a member of First Baptist of Potts Camp and a transportation dispatcher.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 19 at Lee Memorial Cemetery in Verona. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Michael W. Janes; a son, Brandon Janes of Olive Branch; two daughters, Lauren Janes of Memphis, Tenn., Kristi Janes of Lyon; a brother, Phil Cochran (Amy) of Tupelo; a sister, Lisa Cochran of Tupelo; and her father, William Cochran of Tupelo.
