Ben E. Gibbins

Ben E. Gibbins, 87, died Nov. 10, 2007 at his home. He was the widower of Louise. He was a retired diesel mechanic for Saunders Truck Line after 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army

Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery Midtown in Memphis.

He leaves a cherished friend, Betty Farley of Byhalia.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and William.

Wolly Thurman Pannell

Wolly Thurman Pannell, 87, of Southaven, died Dec. 8, 2007 at his home. He was the widower of Clara Morgan Pannell. He was a Presbyterian and an assembler with Hart Manufacturing.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 9 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Bro. Don Wilson officiated.

He leaves a daughter, Jill Carson of Nesbit; three sons, Donnie Pannell of Southaven, Jack Pannell of Memphis, Tenn., Ronnie Pannell of Jemison, Ala.; a brother, Dewey Pannell of Mt. Pleasant; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Joel Clayton

Joel R. Clayton, 86, of Potts Camp, died Jan. 24, 2007 at his home. He was the widower of his first wife and the mother of his children, Sallye Tomlinson Clayton. He was a member of Potts Camp Church of Christ and a registered forester with U.S. Forestry.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 27 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Ray Kennedy officiated.

He leaves his wife, Joyce Clayton; three sons, Jack Clayton of Paducah, Ky., Ralph Clayton of Potts Camp, Roger Clayton of New Albany; a daughter, Jo Ann Mayer of Potts Camp; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; a stepson, Lynn Goolsby of Potts Camp; a stepdaughter, Merion Hunsucker of Ashland; three stepgrandchildren and a step-great-grandchild.

Annie Florine Creasie

Annie Florine Creasie, 80, of Lamar, died Jan. 26, 2007 at her home. She was the widow of Grady Creasie Sr. She was a member of the Church Relief Society.

Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 29 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Collierville, where she was a member. Burial was in Skelton Cemetery in Lamar. Bro. Don Barton officiated. Coleman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves four daughters, Robbie J. Thompson of Memphis, Tenn., Pat Martin of Lamar, Gail Allen of Ripley, Lynn Rogers of Lamar; two sons, Grady Creasie Jr. of Olive Branch, Buddy Creasie of Memphis, Tenn.; four sisters, Ala Mae Conrad, Martha Allen, both of Lamar, Dale Kahler of Arlington, Tenn., Addie Watkins of Barton; three brothers, James Skelton, James C. Skelton, Howard Skelton, all of Lamar; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Ann Taylor; a son, William Creasie; a grandson, Dewayne (Smitty) Hopkins; two brothers, Samuel Skelton, John K. Skelton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Mississippi Chapter, 1900 Dunbarton Drive, Suite H, Jackson, MS 39216.

John H. DeBerry

John H. (Jake) DeBerry, 86, of The Villages, Fla., formerly of Holly Springs, died January 27, 2007 at Village Regional Hospital in Florida. A member of First United Methodist Church in Holly Springs, he was a mechanic in the Air Force for 24 years. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Services were held at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel on Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. with burial in Hill Crest Cemetery. Dr. Curtis Ferrell officiated.

He leaves his wife, Coy DeBerry; two sons, Henry DeBerry of The Villages, John DeBerry of Florence; a stepson, Edward Hogan of Holly Springs; two brothers, Bob DeBerry of Red Banks, Bert DeBerry of Anderson, S.C.; a sister, Elizabeth McClatchy of Red Banks; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera P. DeBerry.

Mary Beulah Hughes Dowdy

Mary Beulah Hughes Dowdy, 83, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Holly Springs, died Jan. 23, 2007 at Methodist South Hospital in Memphis. She was the widow of Lawrence Dowdy. She was a church usher and a member of the mother’s board. She was a domestic worker in private homes.

Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 27 at Free Branch MB Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pastor James Bulloch Jr. officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves four daughters, Mary P. Bulloch of Memphis, Tenn., Jacqueline Sledge of Holly Springs, Velma Davison of Dallas, Tx., Bessie Marion of Aurora, Ill.; two sons, George Wells, Lonzia Wells Jr., both of Aurora, Ill.; four sisters, Annie Jones, Lucy Boyd, Susie Vaughn, all of Holly Springs, Lillian Davis of Houston, Tx.; five brothers, Jasper Hughes, Nathan Hughes, both of Holly Springs, Joe Nathan Hughes of Milwaukee, Wisc., Joshua Hughes of Gary, Ind., Joe Louis Hughes of South Bend, Ind.; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Bulloch Sr., John Davison, Edward Marion, Melvin Sledge, Lonzia Wells Jr., and George Wells. Honorary pallbearers were Elliot Bramlett, Anthony Davison, Marcus Marion, Eric Miller, Melvin Sledge Jr. and Adrian Wells.

Johnie Malone

Johnie Wayne Malone, 60, of Byhalia, died Jan. 26, 2007 in Monroe County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a crew member on a river boat and a member of the Liberty Baptist Church and member of the American Legion and VFW.

Services were held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 29 at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery. Bro. Billy McBunch officiated.

He leaves his mother, Adelle Bobitt (Bobbie) Malone of Byhalia; and a brother, Michael Malone of Byhalia.

He was preceded in death by his father, J.C. Malone

Ozella Cook Moore

Ozella Cook Moore, 86, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 21, 2007 at Trinity Mission Health & Rehab. She was the widow of James T. Moore, a Sunday school teacher, an usher and a member of the mother board.

Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 26, at New Hope MB Church in Laws Hill, where she was a member. Burial was in Greenfield Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Rev. Ernest Jones officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three daughters, Martha Ayers of Holly Springs, Cassandra Moore of Atlanta, Ga., Yvonne Gibson of Chicago, Ill.; a son, James T. Moore of Waterford; two sisters, Troy Miller of Memphis, Tenn., Elmira Curry of Waterford; 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Kelby Applewhite, Brinaldo Ayers, Courtney Todd, Robert Curry, Kevin Gibson, Robert N. Marion and A. Bernard Moore. Honorary pallbearers were A.C. McGowan, Kevin Naughton, Jerome Todd, Adelle Walker, Clen Moore, Roscoe Rucker, Don M. Sparks, Willie H. Wells and Dennis R. Marion.
