Billie Arnold Ray

Billie Arnold “Polly” Ray, 80, of Byhalia, died July 19, 2011, at Dove Health and Rehab in Collierville, Tenn.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on July 22 at Barton First Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Memory Hill Garden in Memphis, Tenn. Bro. John McMullen and Bro. Max Billingsley officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Clifton L. Ray; a son, Gary G. Ray of Olive Branch; a sister, Connie Arnold Savely of Pontotoc; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Clifton Ray.

Thearchie Stephen

Thearchie Stephen, 66, of Slayden, died July 14, 2011, at Baptist Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. He was a retired core repairman with Carrier UTC in Collierville and a member of United Steel Workers Union.

Services were held at 11 am. on July 23 at Hudsonville CME Church in Hudsonville, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby Wilson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Fannie Jones Stephen; five sons, Charles R. Brown of Memphis, Theodoric Stephen, Michael Stephen, Orlando Stephen, all of Slayden, Lorenzo Stephen of Mt. Pleasant; 11 sisters, Tinnie Jones, Eliza Anderson, Roberda Turner, Sarah Waller, Mary Owens, Earlean Isom, all of Memphis, Arlean Luellen, Annie Jackson, Linda Moore, all of Slayden, Gracie Seldon of Red Banks, Lavern McKinnie of Rossville, Tenn.; four brothers, Charles Stephen of Holly Springs, Archie Lee Stephen of Memphis, Jessie Stephen of Byhalia, Kevin Stephen of Olive Branch; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Jessie Lee Tunstall

Jessie Lee Tunstall, 39, of Byhalia, died July 15, 2011 at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Visitation will be at the funeral home July 20, from 2-6 p.m. and at the church on July 21 from 10-10:55 a.m.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on July 21 at Miracle Temple COGIC in Victoria, where he was a member. Burial will be in Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Rev. Joe Tunstall will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his mother, Jannie Mae Malone Tunstall of Byhalia; six sisters, Brenda K. Stewart of Gray’s Lake, Ill., Patricia A. Duckworth of Beach Park, Ill., Arlene Norman of Waukegan, Ill., Jacqueline Sharp of Memphis, Annette T. Tate of Byhalia, Debra A. Osborne of Zion, Ill.; four brothers, Donzell D. Tunstall of Byhalia, Irwin Tunstall, Lavon Tunstall, Tony A. Tunstall, all of Byhalia.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donzell Tunstall and siblings, Michelle Tunstall, Theresa M. Tunstall and Orlando Kilpatrick, Jr.

Robert Lee Walker Sr.

Robert Lee Walker Sr., 65, died July 13, 2011. He was a worker with Marshall County Road and Bridges Department until he retired in 2001.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on July 23 at Mt. Gilead CME Church in Holly Springs, where he was a member. Rev. Lawrence McKinzie, pastor, and Rev. S.A. Phillips officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his mother, Ether Walker of Holly Springs; a son, Robert Walker Jr. of Suisun City, Calif.; three daughters, Monuette Walker of Pittsburg, Calif., Rosalyen Stevenson of Memphis, Tenn., Ann (James) McNeil of Holly Springs; three stepchildren, Sammie Burton of Memphis, Tenn., Tyrone Stone of Holly Springs, Mildred Sharp of Holly Springs; three brothers, James Walker, Johnny Walker, both of Holly Springs, Ira (Linda) Walker of Byhalia; seven sisters, Elnora (Lee) Smith of Aurora, Ill, Ether Collins, Mary Hollowell, Willie Mae (Thomas) Peel, Regina (Don) Walker and Felicia Walker, all of Holly Springs, Maxine Jiles of Victorville, Calif.; two cousins who cared for him, Lee Fant Walker and Tyrone Sims, both of Holly Springs; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie Gene Walker and Tommy Seal Walker.

Pallbearers were his nephews. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Walker Jr., Ira Walker, James Walker, Silvester Hollowell, Johnny Walker and Zabian Walker.

James Albert Williams

James Albert Williams, 72, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Michigan City, died July 16, 2011. He was a former member of Hebron MB Church in Lamar. He worked as a cook in a restaurant in Chicago until he became employed with Metra Railroad, where he worked for 33 years until retirement in 2001. He was ordained as a deacon of Big Zion MB Church, where he served faithfully. He also served as a deacon at Living To Live Again Church Baptist.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on July 23 at Macedonia Tabernacle Baptist Church in Chicago, Ill., where he was a member. Elder L.J. Mason officiated. Burial was in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery in Lamar. Doty-Nash Funeral Home in Chicago and Serenity Funeral Home in Holly Springs, were in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife of 46 years, Mattie B. Williams; his son, Stanley L. Williams (Angela); daughters Carla L. Grafton (Antonio), Tangela R. Williams (Tyrell); brothers John H. Williams (Freda), Michael Williams of Memphis, Tenn., George E. Williams of Lamar; sisters Mattie M. Hamer, Eather B. Conley of Chicago, Lucy C. Dortch (Morris) of Country Club Hills, Ill.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Stanley L. Williams, Christopher A. Grafton, Darius D. Hayes, Robert Williams, Morris Dortch, Ricky Butler, Carles F. Williams, Korey Williams, Johnathan Williams, Steven Dortch, Maurice Day and Ricky Butler. Honorary pallbearers were Sherman Avant, John H. Williams, George E. WIlliams, Morris Dortch Sr., L.J. Cox, Antonio M. Grafton Jr. and Napoleon Strickland.

Earl Young

Earl Young, 64, of Memphis, Tenn., died July 13, 2011, at his home. He was a factory worker with Carrier, Inc., Collierville, Tenn.

Services were held at 12 noon on July 16 at Concord MB Church in Slayden, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Clyde Williams officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Bernice Craft Young; a daughter, Nicole Young of Memphis; two sons, Cedric Young, Wendell Young, both of Memphis, a stepson, Keith Craft of Memphis; five sisters, Frances Young, Mable Anderson, both of Holly Springs, Willie Briggs, Melinda Anderson, Josephine Bryant, all of Memphis; five brothers, Lee Eddie Young, John Lee Young, Lee Roy Young, Odell Young, Floyd Lee Young, all of Memphis; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Dempsey Alexander Jr.

Dempsey Alexander Jr., 95, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 1, 2010 at his home. He was a member of Free Branch MB Church and a World War II Army veteran. He was a retired laborer at Deluxe Construction Co. in Chicago, Ill.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 8 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in Cottrell Memorial Garden. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves three daughters, Gracie Vinson of Memphis, Tenn., Lena Mae Vinson of Holly Springs, Minnie B. Alexander of Chula Vista, Ca.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Riddle, Martin Vinson, James Vinson, Kenneth Vinson, Hubert Riddle, Anthony Hoyle. Honorary pallbearers were Joseph Vinson, Patrick Vinson, Marvin Vinson and Juantonio Tatum.

Pennie Mae Winfrey DeBerry

Pennie Mae Winfrey DeBerry, 58, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 4, 2010 at Baptist Hospital in Oxford. A retired teacher for the Holly Springs School District, she was a member of Hopewell No. 1 MB Church, where she served as youth director, Sunday school teacher and vice president of the Missionary Society. She was a member of Heroines of Jericho Court #38 and the MAE and NEA.

Visitation will be held at J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home on Feb. 12, from 2-8 p.m. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue at Rust College Doxey Auditorium on Feb. 13, from 1-1:55 p.m. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 13, at Rust College Doxey Auditorium with Rev. Leroy James officiating. Burial will be in Cottrell Memorial Garden. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Melvin DeBerry; a son, Jarvis Quincy DeBerry and his wife Kelly Harris DeBerry of New Orleans, La.; a daughter, Krystal Jarita DeBerry of Holly Springs; three sisters, Malena Winfrey Dow of Jackson, Minnie Hoskins of St. Louis, Mo., Doris Richardson of Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, Ishmael Winfrey of Chicago, James Hamer of St. Charles, Mo., and Lewis Hamer of Flint, Mich.
