Helen Bitzer Paul
Helen Bitzer Paul, 98, formerly of Holly Springs and Montreat, N.C., died March 19, 2007 at Richland Health Services in Nashville, Tenn. She was born in 1909 in Corsicana, Texas, the last living member of the Dr. George L. Bitzer and Mamie Rolston Bitzer family, who are buried in Hill Crest Cemetery. Their final ministry was here at First Presbyterian Church. She attended Belhaven College in Jackson, and Mississippi Synodical College here and graduated from Ole Miss. She taught school in Birmingham, Ala., where she became an airplane pilot. During World War II, she worked at Memphis Airport in the Air Traffic Control, and moved to Tampa, Fla., where she lived 50 years with her husband, Col. Albert William Paul. She received her master’s in education from The University of Florida.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Montreat, N.C. at the Memorial Gardens, the family Bitzer Cottage since 1908.
She leaves a stepson, Warren Paul; two step-grandsons, Brice and David Paul; nieces Helen Doxey Tyson of Nashville, Tenn., Sarah Doxey Greer of Holly Springs, Frances Doxey Winter of Monroe, La.; and a nephew Hindman Doxey Jr. of Jackson. The late Ruth Bitzer Francisco and Mary Bitzer Doxey were Holly Springs sisters.
Walter Richmond
Walter (Doc) Richmond, 74, of Holly Springs, died March 15, 2007 at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. He was a member of Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red Banks.
Services were held at 12 noon on March 22 at Adolphus Chapel CME Church, with burial in the Pleasant Grove MB Church Cemetery. Rev. Joe T. Lester officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves a niece and caregiver, Laney Mae Jones of Holly Springs; a sister, Lizzie Mae Boyd of Holly Springs; and a brother, Broadie Richmond of Kansas City, Kan.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Lovaner Daniels, Pauline Tunstall, Johnnie Chatman, Nellie Parker; and five brothers, Crockett Richmond, Willie Richmond, Billie Richmond, Bennie Richmond and Ed Richmond.
Pallbearers were Carlos Braddock, Wade Richmond, Maicheal Perkins, Larry Howell Jr., Johnny Jones and Michael Lawshea.
Thelma Mae Whitt
Thelma Mae Whitt, 86, of Holly Springs, died March 22, 2007 at Trinity Missions Health and Rehab. She was the widow of Wallace Whitt and a Baptist.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. on March 24 at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Malvern, Ark. Bro. Virgil Scherff officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a son, Billy Whitt of Hickory Flat; a daughter, Sherry Osteen of Holly Springs; a sister, Billy Landreth of Malvern, Ark.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Virginia Lavale Algee
Virginia Lavale Algee, 52, of Holly Springs, died Sept. 22, 2005 at her home. She was a member of Red Banks United Methodist Church. She was an employee of Gem. Inc. and Mulay Plastics.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 24 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Grubb Hill Cemetery in Byhalia. Bro. Jamie Fish officiated.
She leaves her mother, Jane Algee of Holly Springs; three brothers, Maynard Algee Jr. of Corinth, Robert Algee of Ashland, John Algee of Holly Springs; and two sisters, Carol Huey of Red Banks and Evie Boyd of Senatobia.
Pallbearers were Roger Boyd, Scott Boyd, Heath Hyde, Jason Hyde, David Algee, Robin Algee, Eric Algee and Justin Huey.
Eldora Gill Craine
Eldora Gill Craine, 86, of Holly Springs, died Sept. 15, 2005 at Alliance HealthCare System. She was the widow of Odell Craine and a former church usher, choir member and church mother.
Services were held at 12 noon on Sept. 22 at Free Branch MB Church in Holly Springs, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Lee Gill officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a daughter, Lucy Mae Craine of Holly Springs; a brother, Pete Gill of Holly Springs; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Oddie Lee Craine.
Pallbearers were Rickey Rogers, Eldred Cochran, Chris Craine, Ezell Hardin, Morris Harris, Rickey Jeffries. Honorary pallbearers were Shirley Jeffries, Ivory Craine, Pete Gill Jr., Sheila Jones, Pete Gill and Diane Hardin.
James Street Durham
James Street Durham, 85, of Snow Lake, died Sept. 22, 2005. He was the widower of Jeanne Inman Durham, a Baptist, a civil service employee, and a veteran of the Marines.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Ashland Cemetery.
He leaves two sons, Phillip Dale Durham of Memphis, Tenn., Michael Durham of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Mary Stroupe of Memphis, Tenn., Nell Horton of Byhalia; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Jeanne Durham.
James Ralph Ferrell
James Ralph Ferrell, 78, of Holly Springs, died Sept. 21, 2005 at his home. He was a retired grocery store owner and member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church in Lafayette County.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Sept. 23 at United Funeral Service Chapel. Burial was in Philadelphia Cemetery. Bro. Kenny Adair officiated.
He leaves his wife, Merlene Rogers Ferrell; a daughter, Robyne Earnest of Collierville; a son, Roger Ferrell of Cordova, Tenn.; three brothers, Billy Ferrell of New Albany, Bernard Ferrell of Kennett, Mo., Thomas Ferrell of Holly Springs; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Ferrell, Jerry Ferrell, Randy Ferrell, Scott Ferrell, James Garrison, Danny Rogers, Ronald Gregg and Fred Churchill.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Corrine Ferrell Liles.
Charlotte Ivy Foote
Charlotte Ivy Foote, 70, of New Albany, died Sept. 17, 2005 at her home. She was the wife of the late Chico Foote. She was a former employee of B.F. Ford Elementary School and a bank teller with Bank of New Albany.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Watson Grove MB Church in New Albany, where she was a member. Burial was in Ripley City Cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a daughter, Edith Cassell of Chicago, Ill.; a son, Darrell Foote of New Albany; three sisters, Allie Joyce Campbell of Milwaukee, Wisc., Anita Wilcher of New Albany, Glenda Waters of New Orleans, La.; two brothers, Wade Ivy Jr. of New Albany, Harrol Ivy of Baldwyn; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers were deacons.
Chico Foote
Chico Foote, 74, of New Albany, died Sept. 17 at his home. He was the husband of the late Charlotte Foote, the former owner of Midwest Merchandisers in Chicago, Ill. and a salesman with Bluff City Nissan in Memphis, Tenn. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Watson Grove MB Church in New Albany. Burial was in Ripley City Cemetery. Rev. Avence Pittman officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves a daughter, Edith Cassell of Chicago, Ill.; a son, Darrell Foote of New Albany; a sister, Chappia Foote of Chicago, Ill.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry Foote, Jerry Foote, Marcus Foote; and three sisters, Norlean Thomas, Emogene Duncan, Amma Roberts.
