Ella R. Whaley
Ella R. Whaley, 97, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 10, 2008 at her home. She was the widow of Ware Whaley and a member of Bethlehem Methodist Church.
Services were held at 2 p.m. at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery.
She leaves a son, Robert Whaley of Coffeeville; a daughter, Mary Kay Garrison of Southaven; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhetta Laware Whaley Fioretti.
Jimmy Lee Yancey
Jimmy Lee Yancey, 50, of Olive Branch, died Feb. 4, 2008 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. He was a fabricator.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 9 at Lebanon Cemetery in Olive Branch. Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves a daughter, Stephanie Lynn Yancey of California; a sister, Betty Lou Jamison of Independence; and a brother, Charles Rusby of Olive Branch.
Eunice Bell Ayers
Eunice Bell Ayers, 68, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 21, 2008 at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. She was a retired child care worker in private homes.
Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 25 at Victoria Church of Christ, where she was a member. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Bro. Willie James Hampton officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves three daughters, Gracie Bell of Byhalia, Rena P. Jones, Earnestine Ayers, both of Holly Springs; a son, Kenny Ayers of Ashland; two sisters, Clara Bowens, Birdie Evans, both of Holly Springs; a brother, William Bell of Holly Springs; 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Frankie Hankins; and a son, Howard Hankins Jr.
Pallbearers were Lonzo Echols, Leon Hall, Roderick Jackson Jr., Dereak James, Jesse Gainwell, Eric Bell and Melvin Sims.
William Christopher Byers
William Christopher Byers, 25, of Abbeville, died Oct. 23, 2008 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a surgery technician at Baptist Hospital in Memphis.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 at Hamilton Chapel CME Church in Waterford, where he was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He leaves a daughter, Ashley Byers of Abbeville; his mother, Robin Byers Jeffries of Abbeville; his father, Claude Vinson Jr. of Memphis; his step-father, Bobby Jeffries of Waterford; three sisters Jilisa Marie Jeffries, Jasmine Monea Jeffries, both of Abbeville, Brytne Vinson of Memphis; two brothers, Taylor Jeffries, Bobby Jeffries, both of Abbeville; and his grandparents, Claude Vinson Sr. of Holly Springs and Joe Willie Young of Abbeville.
Billy Louis Cunningham
Billy Louis Cunningham, 79, of Ashland, formerly a 30-year resident of Olive Branch, died Oct. 25, 2008 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was a retiree of Kimberly Clark in Memphis, Tenn. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He founded and was president of the Mineral Wells Water Association and was a deacon of Mineral Wells Baptist Church for 25 years.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 28 at the Ashland Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Madaline Flake Cunningham; two children, Janet Jones of Olive Branch, Tim Cunningham of Laws Hill; a brother, Milton Hess Cunningham of Horn Lake; a sister, Effie Chandler of Orlando, Fla.; a grandson and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.
Dewdrop W. Davis
Dewdrop W. Davis, 85, of Coldwater, died Oct. 17, 2008 in Chicago, Ill. She was a retired school bus driver. She was a member of Wall Hill Church of Christ in Coldwater.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 25 at Thyatira Family Life Center in Senatobia. Burial was in Carter Memorial Sunset Cemetery in Senatobia. Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a daughter, Bobbie J. Thurman of Chicago, Ill.; five sons, Robert Davis, Terry Davis, both of Memphis, Tenn., Bobby L. Davis of Senatobia, James Davis of Coldwater, Richard Davis of Chicago, Ill.; seven sisters, Azale (Holly) Lee of Chicago, Ill., Cleoria Johnson of Coldwater, Earnestine Cathey of Markham, Ill., Hattie Wilson of Manning, S.C., Elizabeth Newsom of Dalton, Ill., Leester Black of Markham, Ill.; a brother, Harvey Wooten of Coldwater; 28 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Ada Mae Beard Harris
Ada Mae Beard Harris, 66, died Oct. 15, 2008 at North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. She was the widow of George W. Harris, who she married Jan. 28, 1962. She joined Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. She later united with Great Mt. Hermon in Chicago, Ill.
Services were held at 12 noon on Oct. 24 at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. R.J. Wilson, pastor; Rev. Joe T. Lester, eulogist. Burial was in Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves two sons, James Earl Harris, Henry Lee Harris, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; three brothers, James Beard of Watson, William Beard, Major Jr. Beard, both of Memphis, Tenn.; four sisters, Lorine Hope of Byhalia, Dorothy Stinson, Lucy Jones, Ethel Walker, all of Holly Springs; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three children, Sammy, Linda Dorsey and Dianne Terry; a brother, Walter Beard and a grandchild.
Pallbearers were Major Jones, Carl Faulkner, Myron Miles, Wayne Stinson, Antione Stinson and James Beard Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Lester Hope, Larry Hope, Bradley Hope, Wallace Stinson, Michael Stinson, Lennell Beard, Reginald Beard, Jerry Beard, William Beard Jr., Kent Lester, Kenneth Beard, Vincent Beard and Will Phillips.
Bishop C.B. Ivy
Bishop C.B. Ivy, 82, died Oct. 17, 2008. He was born in Lafayette County. He worked many jobs on the family farm while attending a local grade school. He married Louise Clemons on July 16, 1950. They moved to central Illinois in 1951. He worked several jobs including delivering milk for his father-in-law’s milk business and as a laborer for the U.S. Army Depot. He then worked at Dow Chemical in Madison, Ill., retiring in 1984. He was an active member of the Pentecost Power Church organization as a deacon and guitar player. He served as a faithful minister of the Pentecostal Power Organization as an elder of the Southern District. He then became a pastor and founded the True Pentecostal Church of the Apostolic Faith.
He leaves his wife, Louise Ivy; five children, Clarence Ivy of Vallejo, Calif., Christopher Ivy of Belleville, Ill., Margaret Ivy of Oxford, Belynda Hamilton of Oxford, Timothy Ivy of Maplewood, N.J.; three brothers, four sisters; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers were grandsons Adrian J. Ivy, Marquette Ivy, Jamaal Mashack, Rashad Mashack, Jourdon Hamilton and Jarryd Hamilton. Honorary pallbearers were sons Clarence Ivy, Christopher Ivy, Oliver Hamilton and Timothy Ivy.
Services were held at 12 noon on Oct. 25 at Toccopolo Church of the Living God. Elder Calvin Wortham, pastor; elder Lloyd Clemons officiated. Hodges-Serenity Funeral Home in Oxford was in charge of arrangements.
