Thomas M. Boone Jr.

Thomas M. Boone Jr., 84, died Feb. 14, 2009. A native of Holly Springs, Tom was born May 17, 1925, the youngest son of Catherine and Thomas M. Boone Sr. A graduate of Holly Springs High School, he attended Hinds Junior College, where he played football on scholarship before serving as a flight trainer during World War II after graduating from Lodwick School of Aeronautics receiving the Outstanding Cadet Award. Following his service in World War II, he married the former Bertie Jewel Tomlinson on May 19, 1946. He resumed his education at Mississippi State, graduating from the School of Engineering with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged from the Air Force with the rank of Second Lieutenant. Tom began his career with Garlock Packing in Louisville, Ky., and eventually worked in real estate development with the Memphis-based American Realty to oversee land developments in Ohio, Texas, Missouri and Georgia. He was also employed by Dunavant Enterprises as a general manager of a coal company in Williamson, West Virginia. Following a brief retirement in the early 1980s to quail hunt on his farm outside of Holly Springs, Tom became part owner and editor of the Marshall Messenger newspaper. In 1987 he was named general manager of the Holly Springs Utility Department, where he remained until his retirement in April 2006. Tom was past president of the Holly Springs Lions Club, and a longtime member and deacon emeritus at First Baptist Church in Holly Springs.

The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 15 from 4-6 p.m. at Holly Springs Funeral Home and a service was held at the same location Feb. 16 at 11 a.m.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bertie Jewel Boone; daughter, Susan Jordan and son-in-law Kelly Jordan of Holly Springs, daughter Kathy Woods of Holly Springs, daughter Ellen Ferrell and son-in-law Keith Ferrell of Hernando; son Marc Boone and daughter-in-law Dawn Boone of Madison; and six grandchildren, Reid Carpenter of Red Bay, Ala.; Nick Carpenter of Madison; Russell Jordan of Hernando; Elise Jordan of Washington, DC; and Brennen Boone and Olivia Boone of Madison.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Sidney Seale Boone, Clyde McCollum and brother Claude James Boone.

Pallbearers were Reid Carpenter, Nicholas Carpenter, Russell Jordan, David Hill, Leslie Tomlinson Jr., Marshall Tomlinson, Stacy Tomlinson, Bart Tomlinson, and Jeremy Given. Honorary pallbearers were George Humphreys, Joe Rhew, A.D. Hill, Napolean Smith, Patricia Shaw, and Johnnie Bagley.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Holly Springs.

Sylvia Jones Bryson

Sylvia Jones Bryson, 51, of Red Banks, died Feb. 6, 2009 at Baptist Hospital East in Memphis, Tenn. She was a member of Anointed Hearts Ministries Church in Byhalia.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 13 at Antioch MB Church in Victoria. Burial was in McCraven Cemetery in Byhalia. Pastor Rev. Roger Daniels and Dr. Melvin R. Norman officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Jeffery Bryson; four children, Phlander Jones of Byhalia, Tressie Jones, Lee Bryson, Melissa Bryson, all of Red Banks; a stepdaughter, Latoya Cox of Holly Springs; her father, Oscar Lee Parker and stepmother Mattie Parker of Holly Springs; her stepfather, Johnny Rayford of Victoria; two brothers, Campanella Jones, Christopher Rayford, both of Byhalia; five sisters, Lois Rayford of Victoria, Elane Reed of Sacramento, Calif., Carolyn Parker, Cynthia Craigen and Sherion Parker, all of Memphis, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Andre Brown, Mark Richmond, Antwan Parker, Keith Sessom, Alvin Hardaway and Roosevelt Hardaway. Honorary pallbearers were Terrance Rayford, Orlando Richmond, Darren Hardaway, Mitchell Higganbottom, Barry Richmond and Dennis Moore.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Tressie Jones and a brother, Ronald Rayford.

J.V. Echols

J.V. Echols, 75, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Holly Springs, died Dec. 17, 2008. He worked many jobs to support his family, including a position at the Ford Motor Company, where he worked for more than 30 years until his retirement. He was appointed to the trustee board of his church. He also sang in the Brotherhood Male Chorus, Harmonizers, and drove the church bus when needed. He also came up with the idea of video taping church services.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 27 at Mt. Vernon MB Church, Kansas City, Mo., where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Donald W. Givens officiated. Mt. Moriah and Freeman Funeral Home, Kansas City, Mo., was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife of more than 50 years, Norma Gayle Ceasar; four children, Kathy Williams of Chesterfield, Mo, James, Larry and Tammie Biggs all of Kansas City, Mo.; two god-daughters, Tonisha and Shenika High of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Lillian Jones of Ft. Washington, Md.; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Geraldine Johnson Gholson

Geraldine Johnson Gholson, 85, of Holly Springs, died Feb. 12, 2009 at Alliance HealthCare System. She was the widow of Henry Fort Gholson. She was a retired registered nurse, active in civic affairs in Holly Springs and Memphis. She was a member of the Memphis Symphony League, Brooks Museum League, the English Speaking Union, the Holly Springs Garden Club and the Thursday Club.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 14 at Christ Episcopal Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. The Very Rev. Bruce D. McMillan officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her children Bea Hasselman Green of Holly Springs; Dr. Gerald Johnson Hasselman of Clinton; Henry Fort Gholson Jr. and Harris Gholson, both of Holly Springs; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Steve Elgin, Edward Rather, Alex Wittjen, Walter Webb, Freddie Permenter, Jimmy Warren, Mack Buchanan, Minor Buchanan, Ben Martin, Jack Wittjen, S.B. Gresham, John Bobb, Graham Miller, Joe Karr, Bobby Bonds and Mark Miller.

Memorials may be sent to the Geraldine Johnson Gholson Endowed Nursing Scholarship at Mississippi College, Clinton, MS 39508.

Clemmie Mary Walker Miller

Clemmie Mary Walker Miller, 78, of Southaven, formerly of Waterford, died Feb. 6, 2009 at Memorial Hospice in Clarksdale. She was the widow of L.Q. Miller. She was a retired lab tech with Eli Lilly Company in Indianapolis, Ind.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 13 at Hamilton Chapel CME Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Charles Dooley officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two children, Jeffrey Miller of Southaven, Angela Lewis Williams of San Antonio, Tx.; four sisters, Ruth E. Betts, Ida Wells, Lottie Stephens, all of Memphis, Tenn., Earlie Mapp of Detroit, Mich.; six brothers, Adell Walker of Holly Springs, Robert Lee Walker of Pontiac, Mich., Clarence Norfleet, Orlando Norfleet, both of Detroit, Mich., Edison Norfleet, Roosevelt Norfleet, both of Red Banks; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Juan Markeith Lewis, Alvin Curry, James T. Moore, Marquis Johnson, DeMarcus Newson and Ephram Curry. Honorary pallbearers were Adell Walker, Robert Lee Walker, James Batts and Elcue Curry.

James William Isaac Taylor

James William Isaac Taylor, 85, of Olive Branch, died Feb. 15, 2009 at his home. He was the widower of Florence Taylor, a Pentecostal, and a custodian with Ladue Co. School District.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 18 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Lebanon Cemetery in Olive Branch. Bro. Joe Glosson and Bro. Jerry Waldrop officiated.

He leaves two sons, James S. Taylor of Victoria, Larry N. Taylor of Wolfe City, Tx.; two daughters, Vanessa J. Kelley of Millington, Tenn., Marie L. Hood of Independence; four brothers, John Taylor of Plymouth, Ind., Hilton Taylor of Millington, Tenn., Prentiss Taylor of Cordova, Tenn., Mayberry Taylor of Covington, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Beulah M. Holts Walls

Beulah M. Holts Walls, 79, of Grand Rapids, Mich., formerly of Benton County, died Feb. 9, 2009 at her home. She was the widow of Jimmy Walls, a member of Mother’s Board and a general laborer.

Services were held at Mt. Zion CME Church in Benton County, where she was a former member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Eric Shields officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a daughter, Mary Ann Warren of Holly Springs; two sons, Robert Walls of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Charles Johnson of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three sisters, Lovie Cathey of Potts Camp, Juanita Gray, Eugene Holts, both of Grand Rapids, Mich.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.

Pallbearers were Maurice Warren, Sidney Warren, Randy Garner, Dorian Holt, Jerome Johnson, Joel Holt, Robert Walls Jr., Johnny Holt and John Gray Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Johnson, Robert Walls, Robert Wineburg, Stanley Warren, John Thomas Gray and Johnny Holts.

Sallie Ethel Ashford

Sallie Ethel Ashford, 90, of Union City, Ga., formerly of Holly Springs, died Jan. 27, 2009 at Uni Health PAC, Fairburn, Ga. She was a retired dietician with Rust College.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 4 at Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Rev. Edward Moses officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a daughter, Eula Jeffries of Union County, Ga.; a son, Daniel Ashford of Chicago, Ill.; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were David Caldwell, Enoch Lester, John Marion, Keith Mason, F.B. Prowell and John Henry Sledge.
