Van Buren Beasley Sr.
Van Buren Beasley Sr., 85, of Byhalia, died Jan. 29, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was the widower of Dorothy Wooddell Beasley, a member of New Garden Baptist Church, a tire trimmer with Firestone and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 31 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn. Bro. John Johnson officiated.
He leaves two sons, Van Beasley Jr. of Byhalia, Chester W. Beasley of Nesbitt.
Theolia Peter Burns Jr.
Theolia Peter Burns Jr., 72, of Ashland, died Jan. 23, 2009 at Elmwood Care Nursing Home in Elmwood Park, Ill. He was a retired farmer.
Services were held at Greenwood MB Church in Lamar, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Houston Evans officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Berneice Terry Burns of Chicago, Ill.; three daughters, Ardency Baird, Eloise Turnage, both of Ashland, Arbidella Leonard of Chicago, Ill.; three sons, Joe Burns of Ashland, Ben Burns, Cornell Moore, both of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Mary Burns Walls of Ashland; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Michelle Burns.
Pallbearers were Tony Burns, Corey Burns, Paris Leonard, Daris Leonard, Justin Burns and Roman Burns. Honorary pallbearers were Mack Walls, Charlie Walls, Willie Walls, Theotis Terry, Richard Walls, Ricky Walls, Willie Campbell and Clarence Kimbrough.
Josephine Cathey
Josephine Cathey, 55, of Como, died Jan. 27, 2009 at North Oak Regional Medical Center in Senatobia. She was a native of Tate County and a retired food service employee with Wal-Mart.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 31 at West Looxahoma Church of Christ in Senatobia. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Jimmy Stockes officiated. Hodges-Serenity Funeral of Oxford was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Manuel Cathey; a daughter, Debraphine Cathey of Olive Branch; four sons, Rayford Cathey of Oxford, Demetric Cathey, Anthony Cathey, Marshall Wootten, all of Como; her mother, Annie Hamilton of Senatobia; three sisters, Irene Dandridge, Stella Love, both of Senatobia, Mae Leverson of Coldwater; three brothers, Will Hamilton, James Hamilton, Melvin Hamilton, all of Senatobia; and 39 grandchildren.
Leroy Chapman
Leroy Chapman, 46, died Jan. 23, 2009. He confessed hope in Christ at an early age at Eureka A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served as the pastor’s steward, male chorus and mass choir member, finance officer and faithful church member. He was a 1981 graduate of South Panola High School, where he played football and basketball.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Eureka A.M.E. Zion Church in Batesville. Pastor George Golden officiated. Hodges-Serenity Funeral Home & Chapel of Oxford was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife of 15 years, Brinda Champman; son and daughter Laroyis Chapman and LaPeatreya Chapman, both of Pope; his mother, Annie Chapman of Batesville; 11 sisters, Annie Henderson, Clara Chapman, Betty Moore, Mary Carter, Debra Turner, Pearl Anderson, all of Batesville, Bobbie Young of Sardis, Mildred Hentz, Rolanda Chapman, Sharon Chapman, Suzette Chapman, all of Pope; and nine brothers, Curtis Chapman, Robert Chapman, Greg Chapman, Tony Chapman, Michael Chapman, all of Batesville, Stacy Chapman and Carl Hentz of Pope, Willie Chapman of Charleston, Buster Caldwell of Jackson.
Pallbearers were Johnnie Sanford, Timothy Sanford, Johnny Griffin, Francis Sanford, Lionel Carr, Lamont Carr. Honorary pallbearers were Eureka Male Chorus.
Jamyah Makenzi Dowdy
Jamyah Makenzi Dowdy, newborn, died Jan. 27, 2009 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven.
Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 1 at Smith Grove MB Church. Willie Conner, pastor, officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her parents, Shiqeta M. Coleman and Jermaine Dowdy of Holly Springs; grandparents, Jacqueline Coleman, John W. Delbert, Darlene Dowdy, all of Holly Springs; and great-grandparents, Alma Reynolds, Eddie Falkner, all of Holly Springs.
She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Anzell Coleman; George Dowdy and Canary Falkner.
Pearl B. Faulkner
Pearl B. Faulkner, 57, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 22, 2009 at Baptist Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. She was a church usher, attended Rust College, Rice College and Northwest Community College and she was a retired disabled factory worker with Sunbeam.
Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 31 at Chulahoma MB Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. McArthur King officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a daughter, Chandra Harris of Holly Springs; six sisters, Toni Hunter, LaVisha Faulkner, both of Holly Springs, Corrine C. Roby of Calumet City, Ill., Josephine Sain of South Holland, Ill., Annie Pearl Burton of Kansas City, Kan., Annie Seal Foster of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Joseph Faulkner of Holly Springs; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Steve Hannan, Steve Milbrook, Jessie Burns, Willie Reliford, Nathaniel Miller and Kelsey House. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmie Harris, Oscar Lumpkin, Joseph Faulkner, Darron Faulkner, Michael Lee Kizer and Danicholus Watson.
Doris Marie Hoover
Doris Marie Hoover, 68, of Potts Camp, died Jan. 30, 2009 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital. She was the widow of Robert David Hoover and a Baptist.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 1 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery.
She leaves a daughter, Patricia Hoover of Potts Camp; two brothers, James Rufus Taylor, Lonzo Henry Taylor, both of Potts Camp; a sister, Betty Goode of Potts Camp; and a grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Charlotte Hoover, Mary Frances Hoover.
Sinoba Jackson
Sinoba Jackson, 52, of Holly Springs died Jan. 21, 2009 at Alliance HealthCare.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 31 at Kimbrough Chapel in Lamar. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Gardens. Elder Octavis Allen officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves four children, Angela Harden of Byhalia, Katrina Jackson, Untrinessia Jackson, Carla Jackson, all of Holly Springs; five brothers, Cecil Adkins, Johnny Jackson, Timothy Jackson, Wilbur Lee Jackson, Eric Jackson, all of Holly Springs; four sisters, Perline Batts of Byhalia, Hazel McFadden, Zenna Jackson, Ella Marie Jackson, all of Holly Springs; and 12 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Carlos Jackson; and a brother, Adell Jackson Jr.
