Ollie Marie Martin
Ollie Marie Martin, 80, of Red Banks, died Feb. 1, 2009 at Graceland Nursing Home in New Albany. She was the widow of George Douglas Martin.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 3 at Red Banks Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Red Banks Cemetery. Bro. Wayne Cobb and Bro. Andy Skelton officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves two sons, Cecil Henry Martin of Godwin, N.C., Joe Otis Martin of Byhalia; a daughter, Reba Westmoreland of Potts Camp; a brother, Thomas Warren of Okolona; a sister, Annie Martin of Red Banks; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, George Douglas Martin Jr.
Pallbearers were John McClatchy, Randy McClatchy, Jamie Rappa, Lem Rappa, Mark, Watkins, Leroy Derrick, Robert Mayer and Jon Woods. Honorary pallbearer was Charles Tiner.
Vanessa Oliver
Vanessa (Pumkin) Oliver, 33, of Cordova, Tenn., died Jan. 25, 2009 at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was a member of New Salem MB Church in Memphis, Tenn. She accepted Christ at an early age at Strawberry M.B. Church.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 31 at Strawberry MB Church. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Antonio Maddox Sr. officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her parents, Wesley Jr. and Dorothy Oliver of Cordova, Tenn.; a brother, Wesley Demont Oliver of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Tinna Evette Oliver-Hill of Memphis, Tenn.; and grandmothers Bernice Oliver, Bessie Cowan, both of Holly Springs.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Wesley B. Oliver Sr., Cliff Cowan Jr.; an aunt, Betty Jean Cowan; and two uncles, Curtis Oliver and Curtis Edward Cowan.
Pallbearers were Lamont Oliver, Terrance Oliver, Carl Oliver, Sean Blake, Antonio Whitelow and Lee Montez Smith. Honorary pallbearers were her uncles.
Jose Guadalupe Padilla
Jose Guadalupe Padilla, 66, of Oxford, died Jan. 14, 2009 at his home. He was born in Hidalgo, Mexico. Later, he relocated to Oxford, where he worked for the University’s Turner Building. He was an Army veteran and he retired from Mittal Steel USA as a supervisor with 30 years of experience.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 22 at Hodges-Serenity Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial was in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn. Rev. Eddie Goliday officiated.
He leaves his wife of four years, Lois Padilla; his sons, Maurice Padilla of Texas, Lamarr Kirksy of Atlanta, Ga., Lamont Kirksy of Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Charise McGee, Lanitta Kirksy of Indiana; three sisters, Amelia Galvez, Carolina Casteel, Aurora Mares, all of Texas; a brother, Ragaillo Padilla of Texas; four sisters-in-law, including Rochelle Roberts of Holly Springs; and two granddaughters.
Pallbearers were Russell Roberts, Bill Frison, Anthony Berry, Johnny Logan, Floyd Brooks, Winston Shannon, Lamarr Kirkson and Ernest Massengale.
Maggie Phillips
Maggie Ruth Dickerson Phillips Tidwell, 67, of New Albany died Jan. 31, 2009 at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was the widow of Clarence Tidwell. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Holly Springs.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 2 at United Funeral Service Chapel. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Rev. Mike Powell officiated.
She leaves three daughters, Louise Powell of New Albany, Ruth Roberts of Blue Springs, Ruby Bishop of New Albany; a son, Tommy Turner of New Albany; a sister, Billie Barkley of Holly Springs; a brother, Tommy Dickerson of Holly Springs; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rose Lowery.
Pallbearers were Davie Jones, Dempsey Bowen, Shane Wommack, Josh Jones, Jonah Jones and Brad Koon.
Sharon Tacker
Sharon Tacker, 49, of Clarksdale, formerly of Byhalia, died Jan. 25, 2009 at Memorial Hospice Clarksdale. She lived in Byhalia most of her life until she became ill.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29 at Church of The Living Gospel in Watson. Burial was in Greenleaf Cemetery in Coldwater. Rev. Joe Glosson officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves her husband, Thomas Tacker of Byhalia; two sons, Thomas Tacker III and Jonathan Tacker, both of Byhalia; a daughter, Sarah Jacobs of Coldwater; a brother, Herman Wiley of Holly Springs; a sister, Joyce Mansfield of Hartsville, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Cirrito; and a brother, Larry Wiley.
Curtis Lee Wheeler
Curtis Lee Wheeler, 67, of Byhalia, died Jan. 25, 2009 at Alliance HealthCare System. He was a disabled construction worker with Roy Construction.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 31 at New Mt. Gilliam MB Church in Byhalia, where he was a member. Burial was in Watson Community Cemetery. Rev. Joe Richmond officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Lillian Hardin Wheeler; two daughters, Bonita Bynum of Byhalia, Loretha Thompson of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two sons, Ricky Hardin, Jesse Hardin, both of Byhalia; a goddaughter, Eva Jean Richmond of Byhalia; his father, Crell Wheeler of Byhalia; three sisters, Lydia B. Saulsbury of Las Vegas, Nev., Mary Caston of Milwaukee, Wisc., Marietta Davis of Chicago, Ill.; nine brothers, Charles Wheeler, Avan Wheeler, Chesley Wheeler, Dwight Wheeler, Lester Jones, all of Byhalia, Pruitt Wheeler, Scottie Mitchell, both of Olive Branch, Alonzo Wheeler, Saul Wheeler, both of Memphis, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
James Clinton Whitley
James Clinton Whitley, 67, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 24, 2009 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a Navy veteran, a Baptist and an electronic aviator with Metal Smith.
Private services will be held at a later time. Holly Springs Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Betty Whitley; a son, Freddie Whittington of Holly Springs; four daughters, Rita Johnson, Vickie Harper, both of Potts Camp, Becky Mayes, Sheryl Mayes, both of Holly Springs; and 15 grandchildren.
Thomas Lester Barrett
Thomas Lester Barrett, 68, of Clarksdale, died Jan. 23, 2009 at his home. He was disabled, a U.S. Air Force veteran, a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church, an ordained Baptist minister, a member of Lions Club of Holly Springs and a member of American Legion.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 28 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Rev. Tim Beard officiated. National Funeral Home in Clarksdale was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Wanda Holloway Barrett; a daughter, Rebecca Jurado of Clarksdale; a son, Thomas (Tommy) L. Barrett Jr. of Laws Hill; three sisters, Josephine Rush of Clarksdale, Shirley Leist of Biloxi, Dorothy McGee of Mobile, Ala.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
