Deale Binion Cochran
Deale Binion (Bin) Cochran, 87, of Marietta, Ga., died Jan. 10, 2009. He was born in Holly Springs, graduated from Holly Springs High School and attended Marion Military Institute, Marion, Ala. A 1942 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served on the USS Helena until she sank July 1943 in the Kula Gulf. He then served on the USS Miami, the USS Oklahoma City, and as an instructor at the Navy Sonar School, San Diego, Calif. He was recalled to active duty 1951-1953 with the Office of Naval Intelligence, Washington, D.C. He worked for Johns-Manville until 1967, then the Georgia Power Company, retiring in 1985.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 15 at East Cobb Presbyterian Church, Marietta, Ga. Family and friends gathered on Jan. 17 in the narthex of First Presbyterian Church in Holly Springs and traveled together to Hill Crest Cemetery for the committal service. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Ann Goode Cochran; daughter, Leslie Cochran Carruth of Roswell, Ga.,; a son, Cliff Cochran of Woodstock, Ga.; a sister, Rita Cochran Langus of Mobile, Ala; two sisters-in-law, Doris Cochran, Harriet Cochran, both of Holly Springs; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vadah Cochran and Clark Cochran, both of Holly Springs.
Elree Crane
Elree Crane, 70, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 21, 2009 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a member of Free Branch MB Church and a self-employed carpenter.
Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 24 at Strawberry MB Church. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Anthony Morris officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Mable Jeanette Johnson Crane; a daughter, Gretchel Jennell Morris of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Elree Crane Jr., Charles Gregory Crane, both of Holly Springs; three sisters, Bessie Cowan, Emma Hall, both of Holly Springs, Annie Mae Cowan of Memphis, Tenn.; and two brothers, Lilton Crane, Calvin Crane Jr., both of Holly Springs.
Pallbearers were Holly Springs Fire Department. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Crane Jr., Johnny Crane, Levaris Crane, Marquez Crane, Timothy Crane, Ivon Johnson, Larry Johnson and Christopher Crane.
Bro. Troy L. Defer Jr.
Bro. Troy L. Defer Jr., 58, of Red Banks, died Jan. 23, 2009 at his home. He was the pastor of Red Banks Baptist Church and an executive member of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board. He traveled to several different countries as a volunteer in missions through the Lafayette-Marshall Baptist Association and served several churches as pastor.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 26 at Red Banks Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Randy Wilson, Bro. Jim Burke and Bro. Andy Skelton officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Linda Mason Defer; two daughters, Terri Lynn Conlee of New Albany, Tracy Leigh Watkins of Olive Branch; a brother, Lloyd Defer of Water Valley; a sister, Pauline Churchill of Potts Camp; and six grandchildren.
C.D. Green
Clevie Dillard (C.D.) Green, 70, of Waterford, died Jan. 24, 2009 at North MS Medical Center in Tupelo. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a craftsman for 50 years.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29 at Amaziah Cemetery.
He leaves two sons, Kevin Green of Summitt, Eric Green of Gamaliel, Ark.; a brother, Jimmye Dale Green of Holly Springs and six grandchildren.
Helen Fant House
Helen Fant House, 80, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 21, 2009 at Alliance HealthCare System. She was the widow of Fred House. She was a member of Adolphus Chapel CME Church and a domestic worker in private homes.
Services were held at 3 p.m. on Jan. 24 at Rust College Doxey Auditorium. Burial was in Adolphus Chapel CME Church Cemetery. Rev. Actavatis A. Allen officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a son, Fred House Jr. of Holly Springs; eight daughters, Caronia House, Bessie House, Delois Miller, Barbara House, Helen Marie House, Patricia Ann Cochran and Velma Denis Lesure, all of Holly Springs, Mae Alice Taylor of Collierville, Tenn.; a brother, Willie Hays Fant of Los Angeles, Calif.; 32 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Kelsey House, Deundra House, Edred Cochran, Marco House, Eric House and Marcus House. Honorary pallbearers were family and friends.
Walker Edward Howell Sr.
Walker Edward Howell Sr., 67, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 21, 2009 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was a church deacon, president of senior choir, a member of Masonic Lodge #339, star of Faith Singing Group and a painter with Carrier, Inc. in Collierville, Tenn.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 26 at Strawberry MB Church, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Willie Jeffries officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Lena B. Payne Howell; a son, Walker E. Howell Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; three daughters, Felicia Bender, Tevidia Howell, both of Atlanta, Ga., Sandra LeSueur of Southaven; his mother, Bessie L. Howell of Memphis, Tenn.; six sisters, Pearl Rinex, Magnolia Hammond, Doris Holcomb, Linda Howell, Mary Pickens, all of Memphis, Tenn., Barbara Ann Skinner of Urbana, Ohio; two brothers, Larry D. Howell, Fate A. Howell, both of Memphis, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Mary Sanders, James Howell and Richard Howell.
Pallbearers were Larry Howell, Fate Howell, Mario Sanders, Levell Hammon Jr., Columbus Rinex, Larry Payne, Terry Payne and Sammie Payne Jr. Honorary pallbearers were The Stars of Faith.
Dwight Anthony Frankum
Dwight Anthony Frankum, 53, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 21, 2009 at his home. He was Pentecostal and a painter.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 23 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery. Bro. Troy Defer officiated.
He leaves two sons, Shannon Frankum of Victoria, Shane Frankum of Holly Springs; two daughters, Sherry Feathers of Red Banks, Shelly Crowe of Cherokee Village, Ark.; his mother, Mellie Frankum of Holly Springs; three brothers, Ronnie Hangey, Glen Frankum, Bobby Frankum, all of Holly Springs; a sister, Judy Shaw of Holly Springs; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Shane Frankum, Randy Cupp, Shane Esmon, Paul Johnson, Shannon Frankum, Tommy Esmon, Tommy Esmon Jr. and Mike Watkins.
Timothy W. Hubbard
Timothy W. Hubbard, 50, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Holly Springs, died Jan. 13, 2009 at Advocate Bethany Hospital in Chicago.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 24 at St. Paul CME Church in Holly Springs. Burial was in Charity Hill Cemetery, Lake Center Community, Holly Springs. Rev. Tony Wilkins officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves four sisters, Lura Collins of Chicago, Ill., Ridy Sellers of Holly Springs, Climmie Mitchell of Omaha, Neb., Ganice Harris of Cleveland, Ohio; six brothers, L.B. Liggins, Clarence Hubbard, Wallace Hubbard, all of Omaha, Neb., Winston Hubbard of Chicago, Ill., Gene Hubbard of Cleveland, Ohio, Cagie Hubbard of Holly Springs.
