Bob Hawkins, 85, of Senatobia, died Nov. 5, 2009 at his home. He was a factory worker.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 14 at West Looxahoma Church of Christ. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves five daughters, Bobbie Higganbothan, Ruby Tate, Gail Hawkins, Brenda Hawkins, Mary Rowley, all of Senatobia; two sons, Jerry Lee Williams of Senatobia, Larry Hawkins of Chicago, Ill.; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Donovan Mason
Donovan Mason, 68, of Michigan City, died Nov. 16, 2009 at his home. He was a farmer.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 18 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Valley Grove Cemetery. Bro. Kemp officiated.
He leaves his mother, Dorothy Mason of Michigan City; a son, Troy Mason of Michigan City; five brothers, Billy Mason, Danny Mason, Larry Mason, Dennis Mason, Mike Mason, all of Michigan City; four sisters, Sue Rhodes of Ashland, Betty Hobson of Lamar, Patricia Graves of Grand Junction, Tenn., Twanda Owens of Edwards; and a grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Carlisle; and a brother, Jimmy Mason.
Lawrence E. Talley
Lawrence E. Talley, 55, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 9, 2009 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was a member of Mt. Moriah CME Church and Mt. Comfort CME Church in Waterford.
Services were held at 12 noon on Nov. 14 at Mt. Comfort CME Church in Laws Hill. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Charlton L. Johnson, pastor, officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Mushida Talley; four children, Amanda Talley, DeRinta Pegues, both of Holly Springs, Tina Talley, Lawrence Talley Jr., both of Byhalia; two brothers, Ezekiel Talley Jr. of Ashland, Leslie Talley of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two sisters, Gullie Harris, Luevennia Howell, both of Holly Springs; and one grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charlie, Willie Lee, Gilbert and Richard Talley.
Pallbearers were Clarence Allen, Gene Harmon, E.C. Martin, Anthony Miller, Harry Wilson and Jerry Williams. Honorary pallbearers were his nephews.
William Edward Brown
William Edward Brown, 86, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Holly Springs, died Oct. 27, 2009 at his home. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired laborer with Coca-Cola Bottling Company.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 4 at Harris Chapel MB Church in Benton County. Burial will be in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his wife, Maggie Patterson Brown; a daughter, Margaret White of Memphis, Tenn.; a son, William Brown Jr. of Memphis; a stepson, Robert Pegues of Memphis; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Danny R. Burton
Danny R. Burton, 59, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 29, 2009 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. He was a Baptist and a construction worker.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 2 at Hill Crest Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves three sons, Danny Burton, Tommy Burton, both of Kokomo, Ind., Billy Burton of Scotts Hill, Tenn.; a daughter, Cindy Smith of Kokomo, Ind.; three brothers, Bobby Burton of Red Banks, Norman Burton of Hernando, Terry Burton of Sardis; four sisters, Glenda Raines of Hernando, Shirley Bryant of Sarasota, Fla., Penny Baird of Memphis, Tenn., Julie Moore of Harrison, Ark.; and several grandchildren.
Victor Eugene Garner
Victor Eugene Garner, 80, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 28, 2009 at his home. He was an engineer with the U.S. Agriculture Dept., retired after 25 years of service; and a veteran.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Oct. 30 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He leaves six nieces and nephews and 25 great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Garner; two sisters, Jessie Garner, Betty Howell; a niece, Linda Howell; and a great-nephew, Michael James Derryberry.
Melva J. Haley
Melva J. Haley, 69, of Holly Springs, died Oct. 27, 2009 at Baptist Hospital in DeSoto County. She was the widow of Edwin Haley.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 30 at Forest Hill South Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Forest Hill South Cemetery.
She leaves three sons, Michael Haley of Charleston, SC, Richard Haley, Phillip Haley, both of Holly Springs; a brother, Jim Douglas of Denton, Tx.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Vertella Hankins
Vertella Hankins, 63, of Byhalia, died Oct. 24, 2009 at her sister’s home in Byhalia. She was a member of Pastor’s Aide Club.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 31 at Union Valley MB Church in Byhalia, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Joe L. Richmond officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves two sisters, Mary Tunstall of Byhalia, Mary Green of Chulahoma; and a brother, Roosevelt Echols of Byhalia.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bertha Shipp, Mary Lee King.
