Jimmy Houston Brown

Jimmy Houston Brown, 22, of Byhalia, died Sept. 18, 2010, at his home. He was a heating and air technician.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery in Tippah County. Melvin Shackelford officiated.

He leaves his mother, Marcie Brown, and stepfather, Michael, of Ripley; his father, Kevin Brown of Byhalia; a sister, Patty Louise Childers of Ripley; a brother, Christian Conner Brown of Ripley; his grandparents, Stella and Jerry Ambrose of Ripley and Jimmy H. and Pat Brown of Byhalia; and a great-grandfather, Troy Brown of Mantachie.

Pallbearers were Patrick Brown, Barry Brown Jr., Chet Brown, Devin Markle, Cory Sanderlin, Calob Sykes and Jake Childers.

Elsie Cathey

Elsie Cathey, 94, of Holly Springs, died Sept. 17, 2010 at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs. A church missionary, she took pride in feeding the people of her community.

Visitation will be held at J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home chapel on Sept. 24, from 2-6 p.m. and at Mt. Zion CME Church on Sept. 25 from 10-10:55 a.m.

Services will be held on Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion CME Church in Benton County, where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She leaves two daughters, Sadie Washington of Holly Springs, Retter Matthews of Vallejo, Calif.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Virgie Lee Harrell

Virgie Lee Harrell, 102, formerly of Arlington, Tenn., died Sept. 17, 2010, at Christopher’s Personal Care Home in Holly Springs. She was the widow of Thomas C. Harrell, her husband of 61 years.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 20 at Brantley Funeral Home Chapel in Olive Branch. Burial was in Little Hope Cemetery in Falkner.

She leaves two sons, Kyle Harrell of Ashland, Charlie Jackson Harrell of Ripley; four daughters, Ellie Harrell, Mamie Buchanan, both of Overland Park, Kansas, Patti Brown of Houston, Texas, Billie Stewart of Olive Branch; a brother, M.F. Rogers of Charleston; a sister, Effie Thornton of Heber Springs, Ark.; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Benjamin Jones III

Benjamin (Stevie) Jones III, 42, of Red Banks, died Sept. 13, 2010, at Baptist Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. He was disabled.

Services were held at 12 noon on Sept. 18 at Mt. Zion Taska MB Church in Cayce, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. LaDaryl Odum officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his father, Benjamin Jones Jr. of Red Banks; three sisters, Margaret Brown of Red Banks, Barbara Jeffries of Mt. Pleasant, Margaret McGhee of Collierville, Tenn.; two brothers, L.B. Wilkins of Byhalia, Will Williams of Memphis, Tenn.

Pallbearers were Greg Golliday, Jerome Martin, Marcus Moffitt, Charles Odum, Clarence Watkins, Derrick Wells, Tedrick Wells, Adrian D. Wilkins, Joe F. Wilkins and Olton Todd. Honorary pallbearers were Marqui Garmon, L.B. Wilkins, Willi Williams, Odis Harris, Milton Benford, Marteiz Brown, Tony Harris, Elton Garmon, Allen Boothe Mathis and L.C. Gatewood.

Clarence O. Pounders

Clarence O. Pounders, 82, of Olive Branch, died Sept. 20, 2010, at his daughter’s home. He served in the U.S. Army and worked for Memphis Sash and Door Company for 35 years, retiring in 1989. He was a lifelong member of Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 22 at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Katherine Louise Pounders; two daughters, Anita Baker and Patty Pounders Bunting; a son, Ricky Pounders; a sister, Bobbbie Sue King; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Floree Matthews Price

Floree Matthews Price, 83, of Holly Springs, died Sept. 15, 2010, at Baptist Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. She was the widow of Henry Price. She was a church missionary, church stewardess, church secretary and a retired school teacher with UACA Headstart Center in Ashland after 43 years.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Mt. Zion CME Church in Beton County, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Eric Shields officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her daughter, Ethel Mays of Holly Springs; two sons, Tran Price, Earnest Price, both of Holly Springs; three brothers, Willie Thomas Matthews, John Woods, both of Holly Springs, Jerry Elliott of Ashland; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Price, and a sister, Lurline Dear.

Pallbearers were Terry Lee Jr., Earnest Price Jr., Carius Jefferies, Carlos Evans, Paul Holt and Jarrod Elliott. Honorary pallbearers were Tran Price, Earnest Price, John Woods, Jerry Elliott, Willie T. Matthews and Lee Price.

Ernest James Baker

Ernest James Baker, 85, of Etta, formerly of Byhalia, died Oct. 22, 2014, at Baptist Hospital in New Albany. He was the widower of his wife of many years, Rosie Leopard Baker, and a second wife, Mary Ellen Baker. He was retired from Aspludh Tree Experts in Olive Branch. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church in Byhalia.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 24 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Barton Cemetery.

He leaves a son, James (Jeanette) Baker of Little Elm, Texas; two daughters, Linda June (W.T.) New of Etta, Ruby Williams of Hickory Flat; a sister, Evelyn (Bobby) Yielding of Mantachie; 15 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, David Lewis Baker, Ricky Ray Baker; a daughter, Shirley Ladale Baker; four brothers, Edward Baker, Leslie Baker Sr., Lamon Baker, Louis Baker; three sisters, Edgelle Conrad, Edith Lorene Austin, Era Elizabeth Baker and a special friend, Mildred Green.

Dorothy Ann Parker Downer

Dorothy Ann Parker Downer, 83, died Oct. 13, 2014. She was the widow of Ulysses Downer, her husband of 44 years. She attended Newell Chapel CME Church in Red Banks until she moved to Detroit in the early 1950s.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 18 at Greater St. Peter AME Zion Church, Detroit, Mich., where she was a member. Burial was in Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit. Rev. Anthony D. Johnson officiated. Stinson Funeral Home in Detroit was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her daughter, Rosalind Felicia; sisters Ora (John) West, Lessie (Guy) Macauley, Juliette Mayse; and brothers Paul (Joyce) Parker, Oscar Lee (Mattie) Parker, and C.C. (Linda) Parker.

She was preceded in death by six siblings, Ernest, Mary, John W., Josie, Beatrice and Melvin.

Pallbearers were Douglas Ayers, Bobby Jeeter, Larry Norfleet, Melvin W. Parker, Kenneth Dunwoody Sr., Keith Merriweather, Sterling Norfleet Jr. and Kas Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Parker, C.C. Parker, Oscar Lee Parker and Karl Norfleet.
